The Boy and the Sea Eagle

The Boy and the Sea Eagle

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:59

On a windy morning by the sea, a boy named Leo stands on the rocky shore in his mustard-yellow rain jacket, hoping to catch sight of the great sea eagle he has heard so much about. When the huge bird finally appears over the waves, its pale head and tail gliding on wings wider than Leo is tall, he pulls out his notebook and begins to sketch and record everything he sees. An old fisherman named Sam, who has watched the eagle for many years, stops to talk, and their conversation turns Leo's morning of birdwatching into a real lesson about how the coast works.

Sam explains how the sea eagle hunts fish near the surface, why it needs clean water and tall trees for perching, and how seagulls compete with it for the same catch. From this Leo learns about the food web: the fish eat small plants and animals, the eagle and the seagull eat the fish, and everything is connected. He fills his notebook with sketches, arrows and notes, then turns his findings into a bright poster called 'Protect Our Coast!' and shares it with Sam and a group of children on the beach.

The story shows young readers how observation, curiosity and simple record-keeping can lead to real understanding of nature, and how that understanding can be passed on so that others want to help. It is a gentle introduction to coastal habitats, food webs and conservation, suited to children in the early school years who are beginning to explore the natural world and to anyone looking for a calm, informative read-aloud about caring for the environment.

The Boy and the Sea Eagle - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

On a windy morning by the sea, a boy named Leo stood on the rocky shore. He wore his mustard-yellow rain jacket and green rubber boots. His red backpack held a small notebook and a pencil. Leo loved watching the coastal birds. Today, he hoped to see the great sea eagle. He had heard it was the biggest bird around. 1

Leo scanned the sky. Suddenly, a huge shape appeared over the waves. It was the sea eagle! Its dark brown body and pale grey-white head and tail glided on wide wings. The eagle's wingspan was wider than Leo was tall. Its sharp golden eyes looked down at the water. Leo gasped. He quickly pulled out his notebook and started to sketch the bird. 2

Leo drew the sea eagle soaring. He wrote: 'Huge hooked yellow beak. White head and tail.' He watched the eagle circle and dive. Its powerful talons grabbed a fish from the sea! Then the eagle flew to a tall coastal tree to eat. Leo's dark brown eyes sparkled. He wanted to learn everything about this amazing bird and how it lives. 3

Just then, an old fisherman walked by. He had a white beard and wore orange waterproof overalls. 'You're watching the sea eagle,' he said with a smile. 'I'm Sam. I've seen that bird for many years.' Leo nodded eagerly. 'How does it hunt?' he asked. Sam leaned on his wooden fishing rod and began to explain. 4

Sam pointed to the water. 'The sea eagle catches fish near the surface. It needs clean water and plenty of fish to eat.' Leo wrote in his notebook. Sam continued, 'But the eagle isn't the only bird here. Seagulls also want fish. They are bold and noisy.' Just then, a seagull swooped down with a loud cry. It tried to snatch a fish from the eagle's talons! 5

The sea eagle flapped its wide wings and flew off with its fish. The seagull landed on a rock, looking disappointed. Leo laughed. 'They both want the same food,' he said. Sam nodded. 'That's part of the food web. The fish eat small plants and animals. The eagle and seagull eat the fish. It's all connected.' Leo drew arrows in his notebook to show the connections. 6

Sam explained more. 'The sea eagle is at the top of the food web here. But it needs a healthy habitat. That means clean water, plenty of fish, and tall trees for perching.' Leo looked around. He saw the rocky shore, the sparkling sea, and the tall trees. 'So if we protect this place, the eagle can live here,' Leo said. Sam smiled. 'Exactly.' 7

Leo spent the whole morning watching the coastal birds. He saw seagulls squabbling over scraps. He saw the sea eagle soaring high. He wrote down what each bird ate and where it lived. His notebook filled with sketches and notes. He felt like a real scientist. But he wanted to share what he learned with others. Then he had an idea: a poster! 8

Leo hurried home. He found a big sheet of paper and his colorful markers. He drew the sea eagle in the center, with its white head and wide wings. Around it, he drew fish, seagulls, and the coastal habitat. He added arrows to show the food web. 'Fish eat plants. Eagle eats fish. Seagull eats fish too.' He wrote simple labels and facts. 9

Next, Leo wrote a title: 'Protect Our Coast!' He drew a picture of the fisherman, Sam, with his wooden rod. He added a note: 'Healthy coasts keep the food web strong.' He decorated the poster with blue waves and green trees. It looked bright and exciting. Leo felt proud. He couldn't wait to show it to Sam and his friends. 10

The next day, Leo brought his poster to the shore. Sam was there, mending nets. 'Look!' Leo said, holding up the poster. Sam studied it carefully. 'This is wonderful,' he said. 'You've shown how the sea eagle fits into the food web. And you're right—when we protect the habitat, all the birds stay healthy.' Leo beamed. His freckled nose crinkled with joy. 11

Just then, a group of children came to the beach. They gathered around Leo's poster. 'What's that big bird?' one asked. Leo pointed to the sea eagle. 'It's a sea eagle. It hunts fish with its sharp talons. And it needs clean water and tall trees.' The children listened with wide eyes. Leo explained the food web using his drawings. They all wanted to help protect the coast. 12

Sam nodded. 'We can all help. We can keep the beach clean and not disturb the birds.' The children agreed. They picked up litter and put it in bags. Leo rolled up his poster and carried it home. He felt happy. He had shared what he learned, and others wanted to help too. The sea eagle soared overhead as if to say thank you. 13

That evening, Leo sat by his window. He looked out at the sea. The sky turned pink and gold. He thought about the sea eagle and the seagulls and the fish. They all depended on each other. And they all depended on a healthy coast. Leo smiled. He knew that even a small boy could make a difference by learning and sharing.
