🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:22

In a cozy village at the edge of a big forest lives Sam, a curious seven-year-old boy with messy black hair, freckles across his nose, and a gap-toothed smile. Every morning he pulls on his red T-shirt, blue overalls, and yellow rain boots, grabs his green canvas backpack, and sets out to explore. One sunny day, while collecting leaves, he hears a soft whoo-whoo above him and looks up to find an owl with bright violet-purple feathers and amber eyes perched on a branch. The owl introduces herself as Violet, and when Sam asks why she is purple instead of brown, she admits she has no idea. Together they decide to find out.

Violet leads Sam deeper into the forest, over mossy logs and across a bubbling stream, until they reach a clearing full of strange purple flowers that shimmer like her feathers. Violet explains that she napped under these flowers as a baby owl. Sam takes out his notebook, draws what he sees, and writes down his observations. When he touches a petal, purple dust comes off on his finger, and the two of them form a simple explanation: the powder must have fallen on Violet night after night while she slept. The story follows their gentle investigation and the conversation that follows, in which Violet confesses she once wished to be brown like other owls.

The book is written for young children and for the adults who read aloud to them. Through Sam's notebook, his careful questions, and the friendship that grows in the clearing, it shows how observation and curiosity can answer a puzzling question, and how the things that make someone different can be the very things that make them special.

The Boy and the Purple Owl - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a cozy village at the edge of a big forest, there lived a boy named Sam. He was seven years old, with warm light-brown skin, messy black hair, and big round brown eyes full of wonder. Freckles dotted his nose, and when he smiled, a small gap showed between his teeth. Every morning, Sam put on his red T-shirt, blue denim overalls, and yellow rain boots. He grabbed his green canvas backpack and headed out to explore. 1

Sam loved collecting leaves in the forest. One sunny day, he heard a soft whoo-whoo above him. He looked up and gasped. There, on a branch, sat an owl with bright violet-purple feathers and soft lavender tips. Her large amber eyes blinked at him. She had a fluffy round body and tufted ears. Sam had never seen a purple owl before. 'Hello,' he whispered. The owl tilted her head and hooted softly. 2

'Why are you purple?' Sam asked. 'Other owls are brown.' The owl fluttered down and landed on a stump near him. She wore a tiny woven leaf bracelet on one ankle. 'I'm Violet,' she said. 'And I don't know why I'm purple. But I like it!' Sam smiled. 'I'm Sam. Maybe we can find out together.' Violet hopped excitedly. 'Follow me!' she chirped, and flew a little ahead, leading him deeper into the forest. 3

Sam followed Violet through ferns and tall trees. She flew from branch to branch, her purple feathers glowing in the dappled sunlight. 'Where are we going?' Sam called. 'To the place where I was born,' Violet hooted. 'Maybe there's a clue.' They crossed a bubbling stream and climbed over mossy logs. Sam's yellow boots squelched in the mud, but he didn't mind. He was too curious to stop. 4

Soon they reached a clearing filled with the strangest flowers Sam had ever seen. The petals were bright purple, shimmering like Violet's feathers. 'Oh!' Violet exclaimed. 'These are the flowers I grew up near!' Sam knelt down to look closer. The flowers smelled sweet, like honey and berries. 'Do you think they made you purple?' he asked. Violet hopped around them. 'Maybe! Let's investigate.' 5

Sam opened his green backpack and took out a small notebook. He drew the flowers and wrote down everything he saw. 'The petals are purple,' he said. 'And the stems are green with tiny silver dots.' Violet peered at the flowers. 'I used to nap under these flowers when I was a baby owl,' she said. 'Maybe their color rubbed off on me!' Sam laughed. 'That could be it!' 6

They decided to test the idea. Sam gently touched a flower petal, and a little purple dust came off on his finger. 'Look!' he said. 'The flowers have purple powder.' Violet fluttered down and rolled in the flowers. When she stood up, her feathers sparkled even more. 'I think the powder sticks to my feathers,' she said. 'But why only me?' 7

Sam thought hard. 'Maybe because you slept under them every night,' he said. 'The powder fell on you while you slept.' Violet's amber eyes widened. 'That makes sense!' she hooted. 'I always woke up with purple dust on my wings.' They both laughed. 'So the flowers made you purple,' Sam said. 'But that's not a bad thing. You're the most beautiful owl I've ever seen.' 8

Violet felt happy. 'I used to wish I were brown like other owls,' she said. 'But now I think being purple is special.' Sam nodded. 'I have freckles and a gap in my teeth,' he said. 'And that's special too.' They smiled at each other. 'Let's celebrate our differences!' Violet chirped. She flew up and did a loop in the air. Sam clapped his hands. 9

Sam picked a few purple flowers and wove them into a small crown. He placed it on Violet's head. 'Now you're a flower princess,' he giggled. Violet hooted with joy. 'And you're my best friend,' she said. They spent the afternoon playing among the flowers. Sam collected a few petals in his backpack to remember the day. The sun began to set, painting the sky orange and pink. 10

As the sky grew dark, Sam knew he had to go home. 'Will you come back tomorrow?' Violet asked. 'Of course!' Sam said. 'And every day after that.' Violet gave him a tiny feather. 'For luck,' she said. Sam tucked it into his pocket. 'I'll keep it forever.' They said goodbye, and Sam walked home with a happy heart, his yellow boots crunching on the path. 11

At home, Sam told his family about Violet. 'A purple owl?' his mother said. 'How wonderful!' Sam showed them the purple petal and the feather. 'She's different, and that's what makes her special,' he said. His family smiled. 'You're right, Sam,' his father said. 'Differences make the world a brighter place.' Sam went to bed dreaming of his friend. 12

The next morning, Sam hurried back to the forest. Violet was waiting for him on the same branch. 'I missed you!' she hooted. 'I missed you too!' Sam said. They spent the day exploring new parts of the forest. Violet showed Sam a hidden waterfall, and Sam showed Violet how to make a daisy chain. They laughed and played until the sun went down. 13

From that day on, Sam and Violet were inseparable. They met every morning in the clearing. Sam brought snacks, and Violet brought shiny pebbles she found. They talked about everything. 'I'm glad I'm purple,' Violet said one day. 'And I'm glad I have freckles,' Sam said. They high-fived with a wing and a hand.
