🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:30

Sammy is an eight-year-old boy who lives at the edge of a golden desert and loves maps more than anything else. One bright morning he meets Zara, a curious camel with sandy golden fur, a red saddle blanket with yellow tassels, and a small brass compass hanging around her neck. The two become friends at once, and Sammy climbs onto Zara's back to explore the dunes together.

The desert turns out to be full of surprises. A friendly lizard explains that the wind rearranges the sand every night, so the hills and dunes on Sammy's maps are never where they used to be. Sammy and Zara learn to draw new maps as they go, rely on Zara's instinct to find a hidden spring in a dry riverbed, shelter together behind Zara's humps during a sandstorm, and listen to the hum of the mysterious Singing Rock. When Sammy's favorite map blows away in the wind, Zara races after it and brings it back, and together they make a new map that records everything they have discovered.

This gentle children's story is about curiosity, teamwork and friendship. It shows young readers that the world can change and be unpredictable, but that being observant, brave and willing to help each other makes every journey better. The warm, simple telling and the vivid desert setting make it well suited to early readers and to adults reading aloud with children who enjoy animal companions and tales of exploration.

A Chapter from the Book

The Boy and the Curious Camel - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Sammy lived at the edge of a golden desert. He was eight years old, with warm brown skin, curly black hair, and a gaptoothed grin. He loved maps more than anything. Every morning, he packed his canvas satchel with maps and set off to explore. The desert was full of secrets, and Sammy wanted to find them all. 1

One bright morning, Sammy saw a camel standing near a palm tree. She had sandy golden fur, long eyelashes, and a woven red saddle blanket with yellow tassels. A small brass compass hung from a cord around her neck. The camel sniffed the air and looked at Sammy with deep amber eyes. She seemed very curious. 2

Sammy walked closer and held out a map. 'Hello,' he said. 'Do you like maps?' The camel's floppy ears perked up. She sniffed the map and nudged it with her soft nose. 'I'm Zara,' she seemed to say. Sammy laughed. 'I'm Sammy. Want to explore with me?' Zara nodded her head up and down, as if she understood every word. 3

Sammy climbed onto Zara's back, and they set off across the dunes. The desert shimmered in the heat. Sammy unrolled a map and pointed to a rocky hill. 'Let's go there!' he said. But when they arrived, the hill was gone. 'That's strange,' Sammy said. Zara blinked her long eyelashes and looked around, just as puzzled. 4

A friendly lizard told them, 'The dunes change shape every night! The wind rearranges the sand like a giant puzzle.' Sammy's eyes grew wide. 'A magical desert!' he said. Zara snorted with excitement. 'We'll need our maps every day,' Sammy said. 'And we'll need to be brave and curious.' Zara nodded and stamped her foot, ready for adventure. 5

That night, they made camp under a sky full of stars. Sammy studied his maps by the light of a small lantern. Zara sniffed each map and studied them too, her amber eyes shining. 'Where should we go tomorrow?' Sammy asked. Zara tapped her nose on a picture of a tall dune shaped like a wave. 'Good choice!' Sammy said. 6

In the morning, the desert looked different. The dune shaped like a wave had become a dune shaped like a sleeping cat. Sammy checked his compass and drew a new map. 'We'll figure it out together,' he said. Zara carried him over the soft sand, her big feet leaving round prints. They laughed as the wind tickled their faces. 7

They came to a dry riverbed. Sammy's map showed a spring nearby, but the sand had shifted. 'Where is the water?' Sammy wondered. Zara sniffed the ground and walked slowly. Her instinct led them to a small pool hidden behind a rock. 'You found it!' Sammy cheered. Zara drank, and Sammy filled his water pouch. They had helped each other. 8

The next day, a sandstorm blew up. Sammy wrapped his red scarf around his face. Zara knelt down so Sammy could hide behind her humps. They waited together until the wind died down. 'Thank you, Zara,' Sammy said. 'You're a good friend.' Zara nuzzled his shoulder gently. They set off again, ready for whatever came next. 9

They found a strange rock shaped like a camel. Sammy drew it on his map. Zara sniffed it and sneezed. 'This must be the Singing Rock,' Sammy said, reading his map. 'It's said to hum when the wind blows.' Just then, a soft hum filled the air. They listened, amazed. 'The desert is full of surprises,' Sammy whispered. 10

One evening, Sammy lost his favorite map in the wind. It fluttered away across the dunes. 'Oh no!' Sammy cried. Zara didn't wait. She raced after it, her long legs kicking up sand. She caught the map in her teeth and brought it back. Sammy hugged her neck. 'You're the best map-finder ever!' he said. Zara beamed with pride. 11

Sammy made a new map with Zara's help. He drew the changing dunes, the hidden spring, and the Singing Rock. 'This map is special,' he said. 'It shows our adventure.' Zara studied it and nodded. They had discovered that curiosity and teamwork made every journey better. 'Let's always explore together,' Sammy said. Zara agreed with a happy grunt. 12

As the sun set, they sat on a high dune and looked at the desert. The sand glowed pink and gold. 'You know,' Sammy said, 'I used to explore alone. But it's more fun with you.' Zara rested her head on his shoulder. They watched the stars come out, one by one. The desert was big, but they had each other. 13

Back at the village, Sammy told everyone about Zara and their magical adventure. The children gathered around to see his maps. 'The dunes change every night!' Sammy said. 'And Zara can find anything!' Zara stood proudly, her red blanket bright in the sun. Sammy smiled his gap-toothed grin. He was happy to share his discoveries. 14

From that day on, Sammy and Zara were best friends. They went on many more adventures, always with a map in Sammy's satchel and curiosity in their hearts. They learned that asking questions and helping each other made every journey special. And the desert, with its shifting sands, always had something new to find. 15

So if you ever see a boy with curly black hair and a red scarf, riding a golden camel with a red tasseled blanket, wave hello. They might be off to explore a new dune or draw a new map. And they'll tell you: friendship is the best adventure of all, especially when you're curious together.
