The Turtle Who Remembered Rain - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a wide valley where the sun baked the ground into cracks, lived Theo, an elderly turtle with a mossy brown-green shell and warm amber eyes behind small spectacles. He wore a faded reed shawl the color of dusty gold. Every morning he slowly walked to the edge of the dry riverbed, remembering when water once danced there. The valley had not seen rain for a long, long time. 1

Theo often told stories to the younger animals. "I remember rain," he said softly, his droopy eyelids half closing. "It fell for days and filled every stream." The little ones listened with wide eyes, trying to imagine such a thing. Among them was Pip, a tiny frog with bright green skin and a blue leaf satchel, who hopped closer whenever Theo spoke of water. 2

Pip was curious and full of energy. "How did the water come back, Theo?" she asked one afternoon. Theo smiled his wise, gentle smile. "My grandmother told me of an old underground waterway," he said. "It ran beneath the valley and fed the springs. But the path to it was forgotten." Pip's golden eyes grew round. "We could find it!" she said. 3

That evening, Pip brought her friend Bramble, a sturdy beaver with warm chestnut fur and a broad flat tail. Bramble wore a leather tool belt and small goggles on his forehead. "An underground waterway?" he said, his buck teeth showing in a grin. "I can build a channel to guide the water safely. But first we need to find the entrance." Theo nodded slowly. "Then we must search together." 4

The next morning, the three friends set out. Theo led the way, his large dome shell moving steadily over the dry stones. Pip hopped ahead, peeking under roots and into shadowy hollows with her bright golden eyes. Bramble followed with his measuring cord, tapping the ground and listening. "The waterway must be somewhere near the old oak tree," Theo said, remembering his grandmother's words. 5

They reached the old oak, its branches bare and dry. Pip squeezed into a narrow gap between the roots, her small green body fitting easily. "It's dark in here!" she called. "But I can feel a cool breeze!" Theo and Bramble waited, listening to her tiny footsteps. Then Pip's voice rang out: "There's a tunnel! I found the entrance!" She hopped back out, her freckled cheeks dusty but her eyes shining. 6

Bramble tied his measuring cord to a root and crawled into the tunnel. It was tight, but his strong paws soon cleared away loose stones. "The passage is blocked here," he reported. "But it looks like it opens up beyond." Theo, too large to enter, waited outside and called instructions. "My grandmother said to look for a stone shaped like a heart," he said. "That marks the way." 7

Pip and Bramble searched the tunnel walls. "Here!" Pip shouted, pressing her tiny hand against a smooth stone. It was shaped just like a heart. Bramble pushed it, and with a low rumble, a hidden door slid open. Beyond it, they heard a soft gurgling sound. "Water!" Pip gasped. "I hear water!" Bramble's dark eyes sparkled. "We found it," he said. "Now we must bring it out safely." 8

Back outside, Bramble unrolled his measuring cord and studied the dry riverbed. "If we dig a gentle channel from the tunnel to the valley," he said, "the water will flow without flooding the plants and animal homes." He used wooden pegs to mark the path, careful to avoid the rabbit burrows and the bird nests. Theo watched and nodded. "Slow and steady," he said. "Just like a turtle." 9

Pip hopped from peg to peg, checking for any small creatures in the way. "There's a family of beetles under this stone!" she called. Bramble moved his channel to go around them. "And a lizard sleeping here!" Pip added. Bramble adjusted again. "We must protect every home," Theo said wisely. "The valley is for all of us." The three friends worked together, patient and kind. 10

At last, the channel was ready. Bramble carefully broke the last barrier, and water began to trickle, then flow, along the new path. It sparkled in the sunlight as it wound through the valley. "It's working!" Pip cheered, hopping in circles. Theo smiled, his amber eyes bright. "My grandmother would be proud," he said. "The water returns, but gently, so no one is harmed." 11

The water reached the old riverbed and spread slowly, soaking the dry earth. The animals of the valley gathered to watch. Birds sang, rabbits hopped, and lizards blinked at the new stream. "Theo remembered the old rainy season," Pip told everyone. "And with our help, he brought the water back!" Theo blushed behind his spectacles. "We all did it together," he said. "Teamwork makes even old memories come true." 12

Days passed, and the valley began to change. Green shoots pushed through the soil, and flowers opened their petals. The stream flowed steadily, giving water to every plant and creature. Theo sat by the edge, his reed shawl wrapped around him. "Change can be good," he said, "when we prepare for it together." Pip and Bramble sat beside him, watching the valley come alive again. 13

The animals learned to care for the new stream. Bramble built small bridges so no one fell in, and Pip showed the little ones how to drink safely. Theo told the story of the hidden waterway to anyone who would listen. "Experience is like a map," he said.
