🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:46

In a bright green jungle, a curious little monkey named Milo lives in a tall tree, carrying a small green leaf satchel and a notebook always ready for adventure. One sunny morning he discovers something odd in a clearing: a tree whose branches grow down into the ground while its roots stick up into the air. Unsure what to make of it, Milo begins to investigate, drawing the strange tree and writing down his questions.

A toucan named Tico, wearing a thin red explorer scarf, swoops down and joins him. Together the two friends follow the twisted roots along the ground and over a small hill, where they find the branches spreading out underground with tiny green leaves sprouting from them. In a hollow beneath the tree they meet a small green frog who explains that the upside-down tree keeps his home cool and safe, and that the branches make a perfect roof. Milo records his discovery in his notebook and gives the tree its name.

The story follows Milo and Tico as they learn that things are not always what they seem, and that asking questions and looking closely can turn a strange mystery into a happy friendship. Told in simple, warm language, it is suited to young children and to anyone reading aloud with them, offering a gentle introduction to curiosity, observation and openness toward what is different.

The Monkey's Upside- Down Tree Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a bright green jungle, a little monkey named Milo lived in a tall tree. Milo had soft brown fur, a cream-coloured face, and big round amber eyes that sparkled with curiosity. He carried a small green leaf satchel across his chest, always ready for adventure. One sunny morning, Milo swung from branch to branch, looking for something new to explore. 1

Milo hopped and skipped along a winding path when he spotted something odd. A tree stood in a clearing, but its branches grew down into the ground instead of up toward the sky! Milo tilted his head. "How strange!" he said. "I've never seen a tree like this before." His tail curled with excitement. He wanted to look closer. 2

Milo crept nearer and saw thick roots sticking up into the air. Some roots twisted like curly ribbons. "This is the strangest tree ever!" he chirped. He opened his green leaf satchel and pulled out a tiny notebook. He drew the upside-down tree and wrote down his questions. "Why do the branches go down? Where are the leaves?" he wondered. 3

Just then, a toucan swooped down and landed on a branch. The toucan had glossy black feathers, a bright white chest, and a huge rainbow beak. A thin red explorer scarf was tied around his neck. "Hello, little monkey," said the toucan. "I'm Tico. What are you looking at?" Milo pointed at the strange tree. "It's all wrong!" he said. 4

Tico the toucan cocked his head and studied the tree. "You're right," he said. "The roots are up and the branches are down. Let's look closer together." Milo grinned. "Yes, please!" He scurried around the tree while Tico flew above. They peered at the roots and branches from every side. "Curiosity is the first step to discovery," said Tico wisely. 5

Milo found a root that wiggled like a snake. "Look here!" he called. Tico flew down and tapped the root with his big beak. "These roots are above the ground," Tico said. "And the branches reach down into the soil." Milo's eyes grew wide. "So the tree is upside down?" he asked. "Maybe," said Tico. "Let's follow the roots to find out." 6

Milo and Tico followed the roots along the ground. The roots twisted and turned, leading them to a small hill. "Where do you think they go?" Milo asked. "Let's see," said Tico. They climbed the hill and looked down. There, in a hollow, the branches spread out like fingers. "This is amazing!" Milo exclaimed. "The branches are underground!" 7

Tico pointed with his beak. "Look at the leaves," he said. "They're growing on the branches down there." Milo squinted. Sure enough, tiny green leaves sprouted from the branches in the hollow. "But how does the tree get water?" Milo asked. "The roots must soak it up from the air," Tico said. "This tree is truly upside down." 8

Milo scratched his head. "Why would a tree grow upside down?" he wondered. Tico smiled. "Maybe it's a special kind of tree," he said. "Or maybe it just likes to be different." Milo laughed. "I like that!" He opened his satchel and drew the upside-down tree in his notebook. "I'll call it the Monkey's Upside-Down Tree," he said proudly. 9

Just then, a tiny voice squeaked from the hollow. "Hello?" It was a small green frog. "Are you looking at my home?" The frog explained that the upside-down tree kept the hollow cool and safe. "The branches make a perfect roof," said the frog. Milo's eyes sparkled. "So the tree is useful too!" he said. "That's a wonderful discovery." 10

Milo turned to Tico. "I'm so glad we looked closely," he said. "If I hadn't been curious, I would have missed all this." Tico nodded. "Curiosity helps us find surprises," he said. "And asking questions is the key." Milo hugged Tico. "Thank you for helping me," he said. "You're a great explorer friend." 11

Milo and Tico sat under the upside-down tree and shared a snack of juicy berries. Milo looked at his drawing. "I learned that things aren't always what they seem," he said. "And that's okay!" Tico tied his red scarf tighter. "The world is full of wonders," he said. "We just have to keep our eyes open." Milo nodded happily. 12

From that day on, Milo visited the upside-down tree often. He brought his notebook and drew new pictures. Sometimes the little green frog joined him. "You're always welcome here," said the frog. Milo felt proud. He had turned a strange mystery into a happy friendship. And he had learned that curiosity leads to wonderful things. 13

Milo told all his jungle friends about the upside-down tree. "You should see it!" he said. "The branches grow down and the roots grow up!" His friends were amazed. Some didn't believe him, so he showed them his drawings. "Wow!" they said. "You're so lucky to have found it." Milo smiled. "I'm lucky I was curious," he said. 14

One evening, Milo sat with Tico on a high branch. "I used to think I knew everything about trees," Milo said. "But now I know there's always more to learn." Tico fluffed his black feathers. "That's the best part of exploring," he said. "Every question leads to a new adventure." Milo looked at the sunset and felt warm inside.
