The Turtle's Secret Island - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Tilly the turtle lived in a quiet pond near the edge of a whispering forest. Her shell was patterned in olive and brown, and her big warm brown eyes sparkled with curiosity. Every morning, she liked to sit on a smooth stone and watch the sky turn from gray to gold. The sunrise was her favorite time of day, and she never missed it. 1

One clear morning, as the first sunbeams touched the water, Tilly saw something new. Far across the pond, a small island appeared, covered in green leaves and bright flowers. It shimmered in the golden light, then faded away as the sun rose higher. Tilly blinked her large eyes. 'Where did that come from?' she wondered. She had never seen it before. 2

Tilly asked the other animals about the mysterious island. The frogs had never seen it. The ducks just quacked and shook their heads. 'It only appears at sunrise,' Tilly told them, 'and then it disappears.' But no one else had noticed. Tilly decided she would watch for it every morning, no matter what. She wanted to learn its secret. 3

The next day, Tilly woke before dawn and hurried to her stone. There it was again—the small island, glowing in the soft morning light. She slipped into the water and paddled toward it, but the pond grew deep and cold. Her small flippers could not carry her that far. Sadly, she turned back. 'If only I could reach it,' she sighed. 4

Every morning, Tilly returned to the water's edge. She watched the island appear and disappear, and she waited patiently. Some days, she tried to swim a little farther, but the deep water always stopped her. 'Patience,' she told herself. 'Maybe one day, I will find a way.' And she kept watching, never giving up hope. 5

One sunrise, a tall heron landed gracefully beside her. His feathers were pale grey-blue and white, and his long neck curved like a question mark. 'Good morning,' he said. 'I have seen you watching that island every day. My name is Heron. Why do you stare at it so?' Tilly explained her wish to explore it, but how the water was too deep. 6

Heron listened kindly, his bright amber eyes thoughtful. 'I can fly you there,' he offered. 'My wings are strong, and the island is not far for me.' Tilly's heart leaped with joy. 'Would you really?' she asked. Heron nodded. 'Climb onto my back, and hold on tight. We must go now, before the sun rises too high.' 7

Tilly climbed carefully onto Heron's back, her small flippers gripping his soft feathers. With a powerful flap, they lifted into the air. The pond spread out below them like a blue blanket. Tilly had never seen the world from above. She gasped as they flew toward the secret island, the wind rushing past her patterned shell. 8

They landed softly on the island's shore. Tilly's eyes grew wide. Hidden gardens bloomed everywhere, filled with flowers of every color. Butterflies danced from petal to petal, their wings shimmering like tiny rainbows. 'It's beautiful!' Tilly whispered. Heron smiled. 'This is my favorite place,' he said. 'I knew you would love it.' 9

Heron showed Tilly the best spots. He led her to a quiet pool where water lilies floated, and to a bush where butterflies rested in the sun. Tilly explored every corner, her calm turtle face glowing with happiness. 'I have waited so long to see this,' she said. 'Patience really does bring surprises.' Heron nodded wisely. 10

As the sun climbed higher, the island began to fade. 'We must go,' Heron said gently. 'The island hides when the sun is high, but it will return tomorrow at sunrise.' Tilly climbed onto his back again, and they flew home. 'Will you come back with me tomorrow?' she asked. 'Of course,' Heron promised. 'Every sunrise, if you like.' 11

From that day on, Tilly and Heron met every morning. They watched the sunrise together, then flew to the secret island. Each visit brought new discoveries—a new flower, a new butterfly, a new path to explore. Tilly learned that waiting calmly and being patient had led her to a wonderful friend and a magical place. 12

Tilly told the other pond animals about the island, but they could not come. 'It is a special place for those who wait,' she said. The frogs and ducks nodded, amazed. Tilly felt proud that her patience had brought such a gift. She knew that not everything good comes quickly, and that waiting can be its own reward. 13

Heron and Tilly became best friends. They shared stories and laughter, and they always looked forward to the next sunrise. 'You taught me that patience is a kind of courage,' Heron said one day. Tilly smiled. 'And you taught me that friends can help you reach places you never could alone.' They watched the sun rise, side by side. 14

Back at the pond, Tilly still sat on her smooth stone every morning. She watched the island appear and fade, but now she knew its secret. She knew that with patience and a good friend, even the deepest water could be crossed. And she knew that the best discoveries are the ones you wait for. 15

So if you ever see a turtle watching the sunrise, waiting quietly by the water, remember Tilly's story. Patience can lead to wonderful discoveries, and sometimes, it brings you a best friend too. The secret island is always there for those who wait and believe. And Tilly and Heron still visit it, every time the sun comes up.
