The Tortoise's Treasure Trail

The Tortoise's Treasure Trail

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a sunny meadow, a friendly tortoise named Tobias lives in a cozy burrow beneath a big oak tree. Wearing a soft red scarf and round spectacles, with a brown shell that gleams like honey, he loves his friends more than anything. One day he packs a small woven satchel with folded notes and sends invitations to Rabbit, Hedgehog and Bluebird: come to the meadow for a treasure hunt. The friends gather by the oak tree, eager to begin, and Tobias explains the rules. Each clue will lead to the next, but every clue also celebrates a kind deed.

So the hunt becomes something more than a search. The friends help a little mouse carry a heavy basket of berries, share their snacks in a circle, cheer up a glum Squirrel and invite him along, offer compliments, help Old Badger move a big log, and welcome a little frog by the pond. With each kind act, the next clue appears, and the group grows larger and happier. Tobias follows quietly behind, watching with a warm heart.

The trail ends back at the oak tree, where a picnic blanket waits instead of a prize chest. Tobias gently explains that the treasure is not a thing but the kindness the friends shared and the fun they had together. Young readers learn that helping, sharing and including others are rewards in themselves, and that friendship is the finest treasure of all. This gentle tale suits children who enjoy animal stories with a warm, simple message.

The Tortoise's Treasure Trail - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a sunny meadow, a friendly tortoise named Tobias lived in a cozy burrow under a big oak tree. He wore a soft red scarf and round spectacles, and his brown shell gleamed like honey. Tobias loved his friends more than anything, and today he had a secret plan. He packed a small woven satchel with folded notes and smiled a mischievous smile. 1

Tobias sent invitations to his friends: Rabbit, Hedgehog, and Bluebird. 'Come to the meadow for a treasure hunt!' they read. Rabbit hopped with excitement, Hedgehog adjusted his acorn cap, and Bluebird chirped a happy tune. They all met by the oak tree, eager to begin. Tobias greeted them warmly, his amber eyes twinkling behind his spectacles. 2

Tobias explained the rules. 'Follow the clues, and each one will lead to the next,' he said. 'But there is a twist: every clue celebrates a kind deed.' He handed the first note to Rabbit. Rabbit read aloud, 'To find the next clue, help someone who needs it.' The friends looked around, curious. Who needed help today? 3

Just then, they saw a little mouse struggling to carry a heavy basket of berries. Rabbit raced over. 'Let me help you!' he said, and together they carried the basket to the mouse's home. The mouse thanked them with a berry for each. Hedgehog noticed a tiny clue tucked under a leaf. 'Look!' he said. 'A new clue!' 4

The second clue said, 'Share a snack to find the next spot.' Rabbit's tummy rumbled. He had a carrot in his pocket. Hedgehog had a few nuts. Bluebird found some seeds. They sat in a circle and shared their snacks, laughing. Then Bluebird spotted a shiny clue peeking from a hollow log. 'There it is!' she sang. 5

The third clue said, 'Help a friend who feels sad.' They found Squirrel sitting alone, looking glum. His tail drooped. Hedgehog shyly offered him a nut. 'Would you like to play with us?' asked Rabbit. Squirrel's eyes lit up, and he joined the hunt. The next clue was pinned to a tree trunk, fluttering in the breeze. 6

The fourth clue said, 'Give a compliment to someone.' Rabbit told Hedgehog, 'You are the best at finding clues!' Hedgehog blushed and told Bluebird, 'Your songs make us happy.' Bluebird chirped, 'Rabbit, you are so quick and helpful!' They all felt warm inside. The next clue was hidden in a patch of daisies. 7

The fifth clue said, 'Help someone carry something heavy.' They saw Old Badger trying to move a big log. 'We can help!' they cried. Rabbit pushed, Hedgehog rolled, and Bluebird flew above, cheering. Tobias watched from behind, smiling. When the log was moved, Old Badger gave them a clue he had found nearby. 'You are all so kind,' he said. 8

The sixth clue said, 'Invite someone new to join you.' They spotted a little frog sitting by the pond. 'Come with us!' called Rabbit. The frog grinned and hopped along. The next clue was under a lily pad. 'This is fun!' said the frog. They all agreed. The hunt was not just about finding clues; it was about making friends. 9

The seventh clue said, 'Say thank you to someone who helped you.' They thanked the mouse, Squirrel, Old Badger, and the frog. They thanked each other, too. Tobias, still following quietly, felt a warm glow. The last clue was under a mushroom. It said, 'Go to the big oak tree for your final surprise.' 10

They raced back to the oak tree, laughing and helping each other over roots and rocks. Rabbit slowed down to wait for Hedgehog. Bluebird flew ahead, then circled back to encourage them. When they reached the tree, they saw a picnic blanket spread out with delicious treats. But there was no big prize chest. 'Where is the treasure?' asked Rabbit, puzzled. 11

Tobias stepped forward, his red scarf fluttering. 'The treasure is not a thing,' he said gently. 'It is the kindness you shared and the fun you had together.' The friends looked at each other and smiled. They realized that helping and sharing had made the day special. The picnic was their reward, and they sat down to enjoy it together. 12

As they ate, they talked about their favorite moments: helping the mouse, sharing snacks, inviting the frog. 'I liked making Squirrel happy,' said Hedgehog quietly. 'I liked when we all helped Old Badger,' said Rabbit. Bluebird sang a sweet song. Tobias listened, his heart full. He knew that the real treasure was this: friendship and kindness. 13

The sun began to set, painting the sky orange and pink. The friends cleaned up the picnic and thanked Tobias for the wonderful treasure hunt. 'Will you make another one?' asked the frog. Tobias chuckled. 'Maybe,' he said, his eyes twinkling. 'But you don't need a treasure hunt to be kind. You can do it every day.' 14

Rabbit, Hedgehog, Bluebird, and the frog nodded. They had learned that shared experiences matter more than any prize. They promised to help each other and share every day. Tobias gave each of them a tiny shell from his collection as a reminder. 'Whenever you see this,' he said, 'remember the fun we had.' 15

And so, the friends went home with happy hearts. They knew that the best treasures are not gold or jewels, but the kindness we give and the friends we make. Tobias waved goodbye from under his oak tree, his red scarf fluttering. The meadow was quiet, but the memory of that day would last forever.
