The Tern's Traveling Diary

🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:06

Terna is a small tern with a white body, soft grey wings and a black cap, and she lives on a sunny cliff by the sea. Under her wing she keeps a sky-blue diary tied with a yellow ribbon and a tiny pencil in her orange-red beak. One morning she writes her first entry and sets off across the ocean, promising to record everything she sees. Her journey soon becomes more than a record of waves and weather, because the friends she meets along the way begin to entrust her diary with their own messages.

First comes Finn, a small fish with shiny blue scales and a seaweed satchel, who asks Terna to carry a note to his cousin in the far reef. Then Madame Hump, a huge blue-grey whale with sea-glass pearls around her flipper, offers the tired bird a place to rest on her broad back and tells old stories of faraway waters. Flying fish, sea turtles and other ocean creatures add their greetings, and when a storm blows Terna off course, a puffin named Pip with a red scarf and a brass spyglass guides her to a safe cliff ledge where his colony waits for news from the sea.

The story follows Terna as her diary grows thick with notes and wishes, and as she learns that a small book can act as a bridge between distant friends. Young readers who are beginning to read longer stories will find a gentle tale about curiosity, kindness and the way journeys and friendships widen a child's sense of the world.

The Tern's Traveling Diary - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Terna the tern lived on a sunny cliff by the sea. She had a white body, soft grey wings, and a black cap on her head. Her bright orange-red beak held a tiny pencil, and a sky-blue diary was tied with a yellow ribbon under her wing. Every day she wrote about the big blue waves and the bright sun. 'What a wonderful world!' she chirped. 1

One morning, Terna opened her diary and wrote her first entry: 'Today I begin my long journey across the ocean.' She tucked the pencil under her wing and tied the ribbon tight. The wind lifted her slender wings, and she soared over the sparkling water. 'I will write about everything I see,' she promised. Her forked tail steered her toward the wide, open sea. 2

As Terna flew low over the waves, she spotted a flash of silver. It was Finn, a small fish with shiny blue scales and round amber eyes. He wore a tiny seaweed satchel and smiled a friendly curved smile. 'Hello, sky bird!' he called. 'Where are you going?' Terna landed on a rock and opened her diary. 'Across the ocean,' she said. 'Would you like to hear my news?' 3

Finn swam closer, his yellow-tipped fins fluttering. 'I have a note for my cousin in the far reef,' he said, pulling a folded paper from his satchel. 'Could your diary carry it?' Terna nodded and tucked the note inside her blue diary. 'I will deliver it,' she promised. Finn splashed happily. 'You are my first ocean friend!' Terna wrote in her diary that night. 4

The next day, the ocean grew wide and deep. Terna flew for hours, her wings tired. Suddenly, a giant shape rose from the water. It was Madame Hump, a huge blue-grey whale with gentle dark eyes and a misty spout. Sea-glass pearls jingled around her flipper. 'Little tern, rest on my back,' she said. 'The journey is long, but you are not alone.' 5

Terna landed on Madame Hump's broad back and opened her diary. 'I met a whale!' she wrote. Madame Hump told old stories of faraway waters, and Terna shared Finn's note. 'I will pass it along,' Madame Hump said. 'The ocean is full of friends.' Terna felt safe and happy. She drew a tiny picture of the whale in her diary and added, 'The world is wide, but kindness is wider.' 6

Days passed, and Terna flew over coral reefs and dark blue trenches. She met flying fish who leaped like silver arrows and sea turtles who waved their flippers. Each friend added a greeting to her diary. 'Take my hello to the north!' said one. 'And mine to the south!' said another. Terna's diary grew thick with notes and happy wishes. She felt like a flying postbird. 7

One stormy day, the wind blew hard, and Terna lost her way. The waves crashed, and the sky turned grey. She clutched her diary tight and flew low, looking for land. 'Where am I?' she chirped. Then she saw a rocky cliff and a puffin waving a red scarf. It was Pip, with a colourful beak and a brass spyglass. 'Over here!' he called. 'Land safe!' 8

Pip led Terna to a cozy cliff ledge. 'I have been waiting for your diary,' he said. 'My colony loves news from the sea.' Terna opened her blue diary and read the greetings from Finn and Madame Hump. Pip clapped his round orange feet. 'We will send our own notes back!' he said. The puffins gathered around, and Terna wrote until the stars came out. 9

The next morning, Pip used his spyglass to show Terna the way. 'Follow the sun,' he said. 'And take this note to Madame Hump.' Terna tucked the puffin's note into her diary and flew on. She felt brave and strong. The storm had passed, and the ocean sparkled again. 'Journeys teach us about the world,' she wrote. 'And friends make the world smaller.' 10

At last, Terna reached the far reef. She found Finn's cousin and gave him the note. 'Finn is well!' he cheered. 'Thank you, little tern!' Terna smiled and opened her diary. She read greetings from all her friends: the fish, the whale, the puffins. 'Your diary connects us all,' said Finn's cousin. 'It is like a bridge across the ocean.' 11

Terna realized her diary was more than just words. It carried news and love between distant friends. She wrote a new entry: 'My diary travels with me, sharing happy greetings.' She drew a picture of Finn, Madame Hump, and Pip. 'We are all connected,' she wrote. 'The ocean is big, but friendship is bigger.' She tied the yellow ribbon with a happy heart. 12

On her journey home, Terna stopped at every place she had visited. She delivered notes and shared stories. Madame Hump spouted a misty hello. Finn splashed with joy. Pip waved his red scarf from the cliff. 'Your diary brings us together!' they all said. Terna felt proud. Her small diary had made a big difference. She wrote, 'Kindness travels far.' 13

Back on her sunny cliff, Terna rested her tired wings. She opened her diary and read all the entries. She remembered the big blue waves, the bright sun, and the new places she had seen. She remembered her friends: Finn, Madame Hump, and Pip. 'The journey taught me about the wide, wonderful world,' she wrote.
