The Squirrel's Sunflower Shop

The Squirrel's Sunflower Shop

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In the heart of a green forest, a little squirrel named Pip loves sunflowers more than anything. She wears a green apron with a sunflower on the pocket and a straw hat. One sunny morning, Pip decides to open a shop selling sunflower seeds for planting. She sets up a stall under an old oak tree with a sign that reads 'Pip's Sunflower Seeds – Plant a Little Sunshine!' Her first customer, Bramble the rabbit, buys a packet and plants the seeds along the woodland path. Soon, Hazel the hedgehog and Finch the bluebird also buy seeds, each planting them in their own way—Hazel in tidy rows near the stream and Finch scattering them from the air.

Days pass, and the seeds sprout. But when the weather turns hot and dry, the little shoots begin to droop. Pip and her friends work together to water every plant, using buckets, watering cans, and even droplets carried in Finch's beak. Their teamwork pays off when the first sunflower bud appears, bringing joy to the entire forest.

This heartwarming story teaches children the value of sharing, cooperation, and caring for nature. It shows how a simple idea can grow into something beautiful when friends work together. The book is perfect for young readers who enjoy tales of friendship and the magic of nature.

A Chapter from the Book

The Squirrel's Sunflower Shop Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In the heart of the green forest, where tall trees whispered and sunlight danced on the leaves, there lived a little squirrel named Pip. Pip had warm russet-orange fur, a cream belly, and a big fluffy tail. She wore a green canvas apron with a sunflower embroidered on the pocket and a small straw hat. Pip loved sunflowers more than anything else in the whole wide world. 1

One sunny morning, Pip had a wonderful idea. She would open a shop selling sunflower seeds for planting! She gathered the plumpest, shiniest seeds from her secret stash and put them in little paper packets. She set up a tiny wooden stall under the old oak tree and painted a sign: 'Pip's Sunflower Seeds – Plant a Little Sunshine!' Her round amber eyes sparkled with excitement. 2

Soon, the first customer arrived. Bramble the rabbit hopped up the path, his long ears twitching and his red neckerchief fluttering. 'Hello, Pip!' he said. 'What are you selling today?' Pip held out a packet of seeds. 'Sunflower seeds for planting,' she said proudly. 'Plant them, water them, and watch the sunshine grow!' Bramble's blue eyes went wide with wonder. 3

Bramble bought a packet and tucked it into his woven satchel. 'I know just the spot!' he said. He bounced along the woodland path and planted the seeds in little holes, patting the soil down with his soft paws. 'Grow big and bright,' he whispered. Pip watched from her shop, her fluffy tail swishing happily. She couldn't wait to see what would happen next. 4

The next day, Hazel the hedgehog trundled up to the shop. She wore a blue knitted scarf and round wire spectacles. 'Good morning, Pip,' she said in her gentle voice. 'I'd like some seeds, please. I want to plant them in tidy rows near the stream.' Pip gave her a packet and a smile. 'That will look lovely, Hazel!' she said. Hazel paid with a shiny acorn and went on her way. 5

Hazel carefully planted her seeds near the bubbling stream. She made neat little rows and watered them with a tiny watering can. 'There,' she said, adjusting her spectacles. 'Now we wait.' Pip visited her later and saw the damp soil. 'They'll grow beautifully,' Pip said. 'Thank you for planting them.' Hazel smiled, her black bead eyes twinkling. 'Sharing seeds is a lovely idea, Pip.' 6

Finch the bluebird flew down to the shop, his bright blue wings flashing in the sun. He wore a tiny yellow ribbon around one leg. 'Hello, Pip!' he chirped. 'I heard about your seeds. May I have some?' Pip nodded and handed him a packet. 'What will you do with them?' she asked. Finch tilted his head. 'I'll scatter them from the air!' he said. 'Flowers will bloom in surprising spots!' 7

Finch took the seeds and flew high above the forest. He scattered them here and there—near the old stump, beside the mossy rock, and along the winding trail. 'Grow, little seeds, grow!' he sang. Pip watched from below, her straw hat tipped back. She had never seen seeds spread so far and wide. 'What a clever bird,' she thought. 'The whole forest will be full of flowers!' 8

Days passed, and the seeds began to sprout. Tiny green shoots pushed through the soil. Bramble's seeds grew tall and strong. Hazel's rows near the stream turned into a neat green line. Finch's scattered seeds popped up in the most unexpected places. Pip hopped along the path, checking on every little sprout. Her heart felt full and happy. 9

But one morning, Pip noticed something worrying. Some of the shoots looked droopy. The sun was very hot, and the soil was dry. 'Oh no,' she said. 'My little sunflowers need water.' She hurried to tell her friends. Bramble brought a bucket. Hazel brought a watering can. Finch flew to fetch water in his beak. Together, they watered every single sprout. 10

The friends worked all afternoon. Bramble hopped from plant to plant with his bucket. Hazel carefully poured water around each stem. Finch carried droplets in his beak and shook them onto the leaves. Pip dug little channels to help the water reach the roots. 'Teamwork makes the dream work!' chirped Finch. Everyone laughed and kept watering until the soil was soft and damp. 11

The next morning, something magical had happened. The shoots had grown taller overnight. And there, at the top of one tall stem, was a tiny yellow bud. 'Look!' cried Pip. 'The first sunflower bud!' Bramble bounced with joy. Hazel clapped her tiny paws. Finch did a happy loop in the air. 'It's working!' they all cheered. Pip's fluffy tail wagged with delight. 12

As the days grew warmer, more and more buds opened. Bright yellow sunflowers turned their faces to the sun. Pretty woodland flowers bloomed in reds, blues, and whites. The whole trail was a ribbon of colour. Bramble's sunflowers nodded in the breeze. Hazel's rows were a rainbow near the stream. Finch's scattered blooms surprised everyone around every corner. 13

Word spread through the forest. Other animals came to see the flower trail. They marvelled at the sunflowers and the pretty woodland flowers. Pip's shop grew busier than ever. But Pip didn't just sell seeds—she gave some away too. 'Plant these,' she told everyone. 'And share the beauty.' The animals smiled and took seeds to plant in their own little corners of the forest.
