The Snail's Secret Shortcut

The Snail's Secret Shortcut

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a bright garden full of sunshine, a little snail lives in a cozy corner under a leafy bush. With his honey-brown spiral shell, his pale mint-green body, his small red neck scarf and his tiny canvas satchel, he spends his mornings exploring the garden paths. More than anything, he wishes he could move faster, and one day he decides to visit the far side of the garden, where the juiciest lettuce grows. The usual path winds slowly around the flower beds, so when a friendly ladybug in a leaf sunhat tells him about a shortcut through the flower beds, Snail is eager to try it, even though she gently warns him that faster is not always better.

The shortcut turns out to be narrower and more fragile than Snail expected. As he hurries between the slender bluebells, his shell bumps into stem after stem, and the delicate violet-blue flowers bend and droop behind him. Seeing the damage he has caused, Snail feels a pang of guilt and begins to understand what the ladybug meant. With her kind guidance, he learns that the garden has its own rhythm and that the flowers need care, and he chooses to turn back and take the longer path, apologizing to the bluebells as he passes.

This gentle children's tale follows one small character through a single day of choices and consequences. Young readers will learn about patience, consideration for living things and the quiet rewards of slowing down, while the warm garden setting, the ladybug's wise advice and Snail's honest regret make the lesson easy to feel rather than simply stated. It is a fitting story for children at the picture-book and early-reading stage, and for anyone who enjoys calm, nature-centered tales with a clear moral heart.

The Snail's Secret Shortcut - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a bright garden full of sunshine, a little snail lived in a cozy corner under a leafy bush. His shell was a warm honey-brown spiral with darker swirl bands, and his soft pale mint-green body glistened with dew. He wore a small red neck scarf tied in a bow and carried a tiny canvas satchel. Every morning, he loved to explore the garden paths, but he always wished he could go faster. 1

One day, Snail decided to visit the far side of the garden where the juiciest lettuce grew. The usual path wound slowly around the flower beds, past the tall sunflowers and the bubbling birdbath. 'That way takes so long,' Snail sighed, tapping his tiny foot. 'I wish I could find a shortcut.' His large glossy eyes on short stalks scanned the garden for a quicker way. 2

Just then, a ladybug flew down and landed beside him. She wore a woven green leaf sunhat with a small daisy tucked in it, and her cherry-red wing case with seven black spots shone in the sun. 'Good morning, Snail!' she chirped, her amber eyes twinkling. 'Where are you off to so early?' Snail explained his plan, and Ladybug listened with a warm smile. 3

Ladybug nodded wisely. 'I know this garden well,' she said. 'There is a shortcut through the flower beds, but it is not always the best way. The bluebells are delicate and easily bruised.' Snail was curious and a little impatient. 'But it will save so much time!' he said. 'I will be careful.' Ladybug tilted her head. 'Sometimes faster is not better,' she warned gently. 4

Snail thanked Ladybug and set off toward the flower beds. The shortcut looked inviting—a narrow gap between the tall stems of violets and daisies. He thought of the juicy lettuce waiting for him and quickened his pace as much as a snail can. His little heart beat with excitement. 'This will be so much quicker!' he said to himself, imagining the tasty leaves ahead. 5

As Snail entered the shortcut, the path was crowded with slender bluebell flowers. Their violet-blue bell-shaped heads nodded sleepily, and their soft green stems swayed. Snail tried to hurry, but his shell bumped into a stem. 'Oops!' he whispered. The bluebell bent low, its tiny sleepy face frowning. Snail felt a twinge of worry, but he kept going, thinking he could still be careful. 6

But the shortcut was narrower than he thought. Snail's honeybrown shell knocked against another bluebell, and then another. Each time, the delicate flowers bent and drooped, their dewy petals trembling. 'Please slow down,' a tiny voice seemed to sigh. Snail's red scarf fluttered as he tried to squeeze through, but he only bumped more flowers. Their soft green stems leaned sadly. 7

Snail stopped and looked back. The bluebells he had passed were bent and bruised, their little faces drooping. He felt a pang of guilt. 'I didn't mean to hurt you,' he whispered. But the flowers only swayed silently, their dewy petals glistening like tears. Snail realized that his rush was causing damage. He sat down on a pebble, his feelers drooping with regret. 8

Just then, Ladybug appeared again, her leaf sunhat casting a small shadow. 'I saw what happened,' she said softly. 'The bluebells are very delicate. They cannot bend without breaking. That is why the long path goes around them.' Snail looked at his tiny satchel and sighed. 'I thought a shortcut would be better,' he said. 'But I only made things worse.' 9

Ladybug sat beside him. 'It is not your fault,' she said kindly. 'Everyone wants to go faster sometimes. But the garden has its own rhythm, and the flowers need our care.' Snail nodded slowly. He looked at the bent bluebells and wished he could undo the damage. 'What can I do?' he asked. Ladybug smiled. 'You can take the long way and keep them safe.' 10

Snail decided to go back and take the longer path. He carefully turned around, making sure not to bump any more flowers. As he passed the bluebells, he whispered, 'I am sorry.' To his surprise, the flowers seemed to perk up a little, their tiny faces turning toward him. He felt a warm glow in his heart. 'I will be more careful,' he promised. 11

The long path was winding, but Snail took his time. He noticed the soft moss under his foot, the scent of roses, and the buzzing of bees. He greeted a passing ant and waved to a butterfly. The garden felt friendlier when he was not rushing. His red scarf bobbed gently, and his honey-brown shell gleamed in the dappled sunlight. He felt happy and calm. 12

When Snail finally reached the lettuce patch, the leaves were even juicier than he remembered. He ate his fill and then rested under a shady leaf. He thought about the bluebells and how his rush had hurt them. 'Faster is not always better,' he said aloud. 'The long way keeps everyone safe.' He decided to always take the careful path from then on. 13

On his way home, Snail passed the bluebells again. This time, they stood tall and swayed happily as he went by on the long path. Their violet heads nodded in welcome, and their tiny sleepy faces smiled. 'Thank you for being careful,' they seemed to say. Snail waved his feelers and continued on, feeling proud of his choice.
