The Seahorse's Secret Shelf

The Seahorse's Secret Shelf

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a bright blue sea lives Sunny, a tiny golden-orange seahorse only six centimeters tall, who carries a woven seaweed satchel and loves exploring the coral reef. One morning, behind a tall purple sponge, he squeezes through a narrow gap and discovers a quiet grotto holding a strange driftwood shelf. On it are flat, stiff objects covered in pictures and squiggles — books. Some of their pages are torn and wrinkled from the water, and Sunny feels sad that they have been damaged.

A slender pipefish named Pip, wearing a magnifying lens on a cord and carrying a shell bookmark, arrives and explains that he has been looking after the shelf. The sailor who dropped the books long ago left them water-resistant, but they still need care. Sunny agrees to help, and together they press the torn pages with a special seaweed glue that keeps water out. When the books are safe again, Pip reads aloud about leaping dolphins, singing whales, coral reefs and plankton, and Sunny marvels at how much there is to know.

Wanting to share the books with the reef, Sunny and Pip build a book raft and carry them out of the grotto, where shy seahorses, curious clownfish and a wise old turtle gather to listen. A wave soaks some pages, but the water slides right off. With everyone helping, they build a bigger shelf in the open under a coral arch, signed for all to use. The story teaches young readers that knowledge can be found in unexpected places, and that caring for books and sharing what you learn makes it better.

A Chapter from the Book

The Seahorse's Secret Shelf - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Once upon a time, in a bright blue sea, there lived a little seahorse named Sunny. Sunny was only six centimeters tall, with a golden-orange body covered in tiny cream speckles and a pale peach belly. His large round amber eyes sparkled with curiosity, and his short snout wore a gentle smile. He carried a woven seaweed satchel in soft green across his body, always ready for adventure. 1

Sunny loved to explore the coral reef near his home. One sunny morning, he swam past waving sea fans and colorful fish. He peeked into small caves and under rocks. Then, behind a tall purple sponge, he spotted a narrow opening. It looked like a secret passage! Sunny's heart raced with excitement. He squeezed through the gap, his little dorsal fin fluttering. 2

On the other side, Sunny found a quiet grotto. The water was calm and clear. In the middle stood a strange, long shelf made of driftwood. On the shelf were many flat, square things. They looked like leaves, but they were stiff and had pictures and squiggles on them. Sunny had never seen anything like it. He swam closer, his amber eyes wide. 3

Sunny touched one of the flat things. It was smooth and a little slippery. He flipped it open. Inside were colorful pictures of fish and coral! Sunny gasped. "What is this?" he wondered aloud. He turned another page and saw a drawing of a seahorse, just like him. He was amazed. These were books! But how did they get here? 4

Sunny wanted to read more, but some pages were torn and wrinkled. The water had hurt them. He felt sad. "These books should be kept safe," he said. Just then, a long, slender fish swam into the grotto. It was Pip the pipefish, with seafoamgreen stripes and a friendly smile. Pip wore a tiny magnifying lens on a cord around his neck and carried a shell bookmark. 5

"Hello," said Pip. "I see you found the secret shelf." Sunny nodded. "Do you know about these books?" Pip swam closer. "Yes, I've been looking after them. But some pages are damaged. I can fix them if you help." Sunny agreed right away. Pip showed him how to carefully press the torn pages with a special seaweed glue that kept water out. 6

Together, they worked side by side. Pip used his magnifying lens to see the tiny tears. Sunny held the pages steady. They mended each one with gentle care. "Why are books underwater?" Sunny asked. Pip smiled. "Long ago, a kind sailor dropped them here. They are water-resistant, but still need love." Sunny felt proud to help. The shelf grew neat and tidy again. 7

When the pages were safe, Pip picked up a book. "Let's read," he said. Sunny snuggled close. They read about dolphins that leap and whales that sing. They learned about coral reefs and tiny plankton. Sunny's eyes grew wide with wonder. "There's so much to know!" he cried. Pip nodded. "Books are like windows to the world." 8

Sunny wanted to share the books with his friends. But the grotto was small and hidden. "How can we bring everyone here?" he asked. Pip thought. "We can't move the shelf, but we can bring the books to them. We'll make a book raft!" They found a flat piece of driftwood and tied it with seaweed. They loaded the books carefully and pushed the raft out of the grotto. 9

Word spread through the reef. "Sunny found books!" cried the little fish. Soon, a crowd gathered. There were shy seahorses, curious clownfish, and a wise old turtle. Sunny and Pip showed them the books. They read aloud about the sea. Everyone listened, amazed. The books were a treasure! But the raft was small, and the books couldn't go everywhere. 10

Just then, a big wave splashed over the raft. Some books got wet! Sunny gasped. "Oh no!" But Pip held up a page. "Look! The water slides right off. These pages are water-resistant!" Everyone cheered. Sunny blinked. "So the books are safe in water?" Pip nodded. "Yes, but they still need care. That's why we keep them on the shelf and repair them." 11

Sunny had an idea. "Let's build a bigger shelf here, in the open!" All the friends helped. They found more driftwood and stacked it high. They made a cozy reading nook under a coral arch. Pip placed the books on the new shelf. Sunny added a sign: "The Secret Shelf – for everyone!" Now everyone could come and read anytime. 12

From that day on, the reef was full of stories. Friends took turns reading aloud. They learned about faraway places and amazing creatures. Sunny discovered that knowledge can be found in unexpected places—like a hidden grotto. And he learned that sharing what you know makes it even better. The books brought everyone closer together. 13

Pip and Sunny became best friends. They spent many happy hours reading side by side. Pip's shell bookmark marked their favorite pages. Sunny's seaweed satchel carried snacks for their reading picnics. They laughed at funny stories and marveled at true ones. The secret shelf was no longer a secret —it was a gift to the whole reef. 14

Sometimes, Sunny would sit on the shelf and look at the books. He remembered the day he found them. His heart felt warm. He knew that books and friendship made every underwater day brighter. And he knew that there were always more surprises waiting, if you were curious enough to look. The sea was full of secrets, just waiting to be discovered.
