The Rabbit's Golden Airship

The Rabbit's Golden Airship

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a cozy burrow at the edge of a sunny meadow lives a rabbit with soft cream-white fur and a head full of ideas. Wearing blue aviator goggles, a red scarf and a leather tool belt with a tiny wrench, he spends his mornings tinkering and building. This spring he has one big dream: to construct a golden airship and fly high above the clouds. He sketches plans, measures wood, polishes brass and stitches cloth, checking every part twice as he goes.

Word of his project spreads across the meadow, and a small sparrow with a yellow navigator cap and a brass compass arrives at his windowsill offering to help. Together the two friends test the airship step by step: the compass, the rudder, the altimeter and the balloon's ropes. They fix what sticks, replace a frayed rope and adjust a jumpy needle until everything runs smoothly. Then they draw a flight plan to a big oak tree and back, pack a picnic of carrots, seeds and tea, and check the weather for clear skies and a gentle breeze.

The story follows the rabbit and the sparrow through their careful preparations and their first flight, when the wind turns out to be stronger than expected and their planning is put to the test. Young readers learn about patience, teamwork and the value of checking things twice before setting off on a big adventure. It is a gentle tale for children who like building, flying and stories about friendship, suited to being read aloud or enjoyed by early readers on their own.

The Rabbit's Golden Airship - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a cozy burrow at the edge of a sunny meadow lived a rabbit with soft cream-white fur and long ears. His round dark brown eyes sparkled with ideas. He wore blue aviator goggles pushed up on his forehead and a red scarf around his neck. A brown leather tool belt with a tiny wrench hung at his side. Every morning, he tinkered and built wonderful things. 1

This spring, the rabbit had a big dream: to build a golden airship and fly high above the clouds. He sketched plans and measured wood. He polished brass and stitched cloth. His tool belt jingled as he worked. 'A golden airship,' he whispered, 'shiny and bright, will carry me up to the sky.' He worked patiently, checking each part twice. 2

Word of the rabbit's golden airship spread across the meadow. One morning, a small sparrow landed on his windowsill. She had chestnut-brown wings, a pale cream belly, and a tiny yellow navigator cap with a brass compass pinned to it. 'I heard you're building an airship,' she chirped. 'I'm a quick flier and a clever tester. Can I help?' The rabbit smiled warmly. 'Yes, please!' 3

The rabbit showed the sparrow his golden airship. It gleamed in the sunlight, with a wicker basket and a big balloon painted gold. 'It's beautiful!' said the sparrow, fluttering around it. 'But have you tested the navigation system?' The rabbit shook his head. 'Not yet. That's the trickiest part.' The sparrow perched on his paw. 'Then let's test it together, step by step.' 4

First, they checked the compass. The sparrow flew in a circle and called out directions. 'North!' she chirped, and the rabbit turned the wheel. The compass needle wobbled, then pointed true. 'Good,' said the rabbit, marking his list. 'Next, the rudder.' They tested how the airship turned left and right. The sparrow watched closely. 'It sticks a little,' she said. 'Let's fix that before we fly.' 5

The rabbit fetched his tiny wrench and tightened a bolt on the rudder. The sparrow flew up to inspect. 'Smooth as a feather now!' she cheered. They moved to the altimeter, which showed how high they were. The rabbit tapped it gently. The needle jumped. 'It's a bit jumpy,' said the sparrow. 'We need it steady for a safe flight.' They adjusted it carefully until it moved smoothly. 6

Next, they tested the balloon's ropes. The sparrow tugged each one with her beak. 'This rope is frayed,' she said, pointing. The rabbit replaced it with a strong new one. They checked the sandbags, the anchor, and the little stove for hot tea. The rabbit wrote everything on a long list. 'Planning makes perfect,' he said. The sparrow nodded. 'And checking makes it safe.' 7

They made a flight plan. The rabbit drew a map with hills, rivers, and a big oak tree. 'We'll fly to the oak and back,' he said. The sparrow marked the wind direction with her compass. 'The wind will push us home,' she said. They packed a picnic: carrots for the rabbit, seeds for the sparrow, and a thermos of tea. They checked the weather: clear skies and gentle breeze. 8

The night before the flight, the rabbit couldn't sleep. He worried about unexpected gusts and tricky landings. The sparrow tapped on his window. 'I brought you a lucky feather,' she said, tucking it into his scarf. 'And remember, we checked everything twice.' The rabbit felt calmer. 'You're right,' he said. 'We planned well. Tomorrow, we fly!' He drifted off to sleep with a smile. 9

The morning was bright and golden. The rabbit put on his goggles and scarf. The sparrow wore her navigator cap and compass. They climbed into the wicker basket. The rabbit started the little engine, and the propeller spun. The golden airship rose slowly, then faster, until the meadow looked like a patchwork quilt. 'We're flying!' the rabbit cheered. The sparrow did a happy loop in the air. 10

Up high, the wind was stronger than they expected. The airship swayed, and the compass needle spun. 'Hold on!' said the rabbit. 'Let's use our plan.' The sparrow checked the map. 'Turn toward the big oak,' she said. 'The wind will help us.' The rabbit turned the wheel, and the airship steadied. They worked together, calm and careful, just as they had practiced. 11

They reached the big oak tree and landed gently in a soft field. The rabbit anchored the airship and they shared their picnic. 'We did it!' said the sparrow, nibbling a seed. 'Because we planned and checked,' said the rabbit, munching a carrot. They watched the clouds drift by. 'And because we helped each other,' added the sparrow. They clinked their teacups and laughed. 12

On the way home, the wind carried them swiftly. The rabbit steered while the sparrow navigated. They flew over rivers and hills, waving at a family of ducks below. The golden airship sparkled in the afternoon sun. 'This is the best adventure ever!' said the rabbit. 'And we have a story to tell,' said the sparrow. They landed softly in the meadow as the sun began to set. 13

Their friends gathered around the golden airship. 'Tell us everything!' they cried. The rabbit and sparrow explained how they had tested each part and made a careful plan. 'It wasn't just luck,' said the rabbit. 'We checked every step.' The sparrow nodded. 'Big dreams need good plans.' The friends cheered. The rabbit felt proud and happy, and the sparrow perched on his shoulder, beaming.
