The Penguin's Moon Garden

The Penguin's Moon Garden

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Pip is a small penguin chick with a sleek black back, a white belly and a soft grey downy head, living on a wide snowy plain where the ice sparkles like sugar. Every night he waddles to the edge of the ice to watch the moon's silver light dance on the frozen sea, and he calls the moon his night-light. One moonlit night he notices a soft blue glow twinkling beneath the ice and, when his friends insist that ice cannot glow, he sets out alone to discover what is hidden there.

What Pip finds is a secret garden of moonflowers growing under the ice, blooming only when the moon is full and glowing like little blue lanterns. A large spotted seal named Luna explains how the flowers depend on clear ice and still water to survive. Pip promises to watch over the garden, but he still has much to learn: he picks one of the flowers to show Luna and discovers that a moonflower loses its magic once it is taken from where it belongs. When a strong wind cracks the ice above the garden, Pip must race for help and find out what he and Luna can do together.

This gentle tale for young children explores curiosity, honesty and responsibility. It shows readers that the most beautiful things are often hidden, that caring for them means leaving them undisturbed, and that asking for help is a form of bravery. Pip's mistakes are treated with kindness rather than blame, making the story well suited to bedtime reading and to conversations with children about protecting nature and working with others.

The Penguin's Moon Garden - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Pip was a small penguin chick with a sleek black back, a white belly, and a soft grey downy head. He lived on a wide, snowy plain where the ice sparkled like sugar. Every night, the moon rose big and round over the frozen sea. Pip loved to waddle to the edge of the ice and watch the silver light dance on the water. "The moon is my night-light," he chirped. 1

One moonlit night, Pip noticed a soft blue glow coming from under the ice. It twinkled and flickered like a tiny star trapped below. "What could that be?" he wondered, his big round eyes wide with curiosity. He pressed his beak to the cold, clear ice. Beneath it, something beautiful was shining. Pip's heart went thump-thump with excitement. 2

Pip scampered back to his snowy home and told his friends about the glow. But the other penguins just shook their heads. "Ice doesn't glow," they said. "You must have imagined it." Pip frowned, but he knew what he had seen. That night, he decided to find out for sure. He waddled out alone, his small orange feet crunching softly on the snow. 3

Pip followed the blue light until he reached a secret hollow in the ice. He peeked through a crack and gasped. There, beneath the moonlit ice, grew a garden of flowers! They glowed like little blue lanterns, their petals shimmering with magic. "Flowers? Under the ice?" Pip whispered. He could hardly believe his round dark eyes. It was the most amazing thing he had ever seen. 4

Pip wanted to tell everyone, but he was afraid the garden might get hurt. Just then, a big silvery shape slid up beside him. It was Luna, a large seal with spotted fur and a kind, whiskered face. "Hello, little one," she said gently. "I see you've found the moon garden." Pip's tiny beak fell open. "You know about it?" he asked. 5

Luna nodded and smiled. "These are moonflowers," she explained. "They only bloom when the moon is full. They need the ice to stay clear and the water to stay still." Pip looked at the glowing blue petals and felt a warm glow inside. "They're beautiful," he said. "I want to keep them safe." Luna's dark eyes twinkled. "Then we must protect them together," she said. 6

Luna showed Pip how the moonflowers grew. Their roots reached down into the dark, still water, and their petals opened only under the moon's silver light. "If the ice cracks or the water gets too warm, the flowers will fade," Luna said. Pip nodded seriously. "I'll watch over them every night," he promised. He felt proud and a little bit important. 7

The next night, Pip brought a single glowing blue flower to show Luna. He carried it carefully in his little orange beak. "Look how it shines!" he chirped. But Luna looked worried. "Oh, Pip," she said softly, "picking a moonflower makes it lose its magic. It will never glow again." Pip's eyes went wide. He had not known. He felt a little sad. 8

Pip gently placed the flower back near the crack in the ice, but its light had already dimmed. "I'm sorry," he whispered. Luna nuzzled him with her whiskered nose. "You didn't know," she said. "Now you do. The best way to protect something beautiful is to leave it where it belongs." Pip nodded. He would remember that. He wanted to make things right. 9

That night, a strong wind began to blow. The ice groaned and creaked. Pip hurried to the moon garden and saw a crack spreading across the ice above the flowers. "Oh no!" he cried. "The cold wind is breaking the ice!" He flapped his small flippers, but he was too little to stop it. He needed help. He needed Luna. 10

Pip raced across the snow, calling for Luna. The big seal slid out of the water, her spotted fur shining in the moonlight. "What's wrong, little one?" she asked. "The moon garden!" Pip panted. "The ice is cracking!" Luna's kind face grew serious. "Show me," she said. Together they hurried back, Pip's stubby feet slipping on the snow. 11

When they reached the garden, the crack was wider. Luna thought quickly. "We can pack snow into the crack to keep the cold in," she said. "And you can sing to the flowers to keep them calm." Pip wasn't sure flowers could hear, but he trusted Luna. He sang a soft, wobbly song while Luna packed snow with her smooth flippers. Slowly, the crack stopped growing. 12

The moonflowers glowed brighter, as if they were listening to Pip's song. The blue light pulsed gently, and the ice grew thick and clear again. "We did it!" Pip cheered. Luna smiled her gentle smile. "We did it together," she said. "The garden is safe because you were brave and asked for help." Pip felt warm inside, even in the cold night air. 13

From that night on, Pip and Luna became the guardians of the moon garden. Every full moon, they met by the secret hollow. Pip sang to the flowers, and Luna kept the ice strong. The other penguins noticed the blue glow and came to see. "Nature can surprise us," Pip told them. "Even under the ice, wonderful things can grow." 14
