The Penguin's Golden Clock - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

On a small island where the waves whispered and the gulls called, lived a little penguin named Pip. He was knee-high to a human, with a glossy black back, a snowy white belly, and bright amber eyes. Around his neck, he wore a sky blue knitted scarf with white stripes, always a little loose. Pip loved to explore the rocky shore, especially where the tide pools sparkled like jewels. 1

One bright morning, as Pip waddled along the beach, something shiny caught his eye. There, half-buried in the sand, was a golden pocket clock. It was small and round, with delicate hands and tiny numbers that glowed. When Pip picked it up, the clock ticked softly, and the hands moved in a strange, steady rhythm. He had never seen anything like it. 2

Pip soon discovered that the golden clock did something magical. Whenever he held it near the sea, the hands would point to the tide's height and the time it would change. It could predict when the water would rise and fall! Pip's amber eyes grew wide with wonder. He decided to keep the clock a secret, just for himself. He tucked it safely under his scarf and waddled home. 3

The next day, Mara the sea otter was getting ready to fish. She wore her red canvas vest and woven straw hat, and her whiskers twitched with excitement. 'I hope the tide is right for fishing,' she said. Pip felt the golden clock tick against his chest. He knew the tide would turn soon, but he said nothing. Mara rowed out and came back with an empty net, looking tired and disappointed. 4

Later, Tobin the puffin was planning a sailing trip. He flapped his orange webbed feet and adjusted his yellow raincoat. 'I want to sail to the next island,' he said. 'But I'm not sure about the tides.' Pip clutched the clock tightly. He knew the tide would be low, and Tobin's boat might get stuck. But Pip stayed quiet, and Tobin's trip was delayed. Pip felt a little pang in his heart. 5

That evening, Pip sat alone on the rocks, watching the waves. The golden clock ticked softly in his flipper. He thought about Mara's empty net and Tobin's canceled trip. 'Maybe keeping the clock secret isn't so good,' he whispered. The sky turned pink and gold, and the sea sighed. Pip looked at the clock, and the clock seemed to look back at him. 6

The next morning, Pip saw Gran Nessa, the old tortoise, slowly walking along the path. Her mossy shell was covered by a purple shawl, and her spectacles glinted in the sun. 'You look troubled, little one,' she said gently. Pip hesitated, then showed her the golden clock. Gran Nessa smiled. 'Knowledge is like a seed,' she said. 'It grows best when shared.' 7

Pip thought about her words all day. He watched the islanders go about their business, and he saw how much they needed to know about the tides. Fishermen needed to know when to cast their nets. Sailors needed to know when to set sail. Swimmers needed to know when the water was calm. The golden clock could help them all. Pip made a decision. 8

The next morning, Pip waddled to the beach where Mara was preparing her boat. 'Mara,' he said, 'I have something to tell you.' He pulled out the golden clock and showed her how it worked. 'The tide will be high in two hours,' he said. 'That's the best time to fish.' Mara's dark eyes lit up. 'Thank you, Pip!' she said. 'You're a lifesaver!' 9

Mara came back with a net full of fish. She told everyone about Pip and his golden clock. Soon, Tobin the puffin came waddling over. 'Pip, can you help me plan my sailing trip?' he asked. Pip checked the clock. 'The tide will be perfect tomorrow morning,' he said. Tobin thanked him and sailed away happily the next day, his yellow raincoat flapping in the breeze. 10

Word spread across the island. Whenever friends wanted to swim, fish, or sail, they came to Pip. He would check the golden clock and tell them the best time to go. 'The tide will be low this afternoon,' he told a group of swimmers. 'Wait until evening, when it's calm.' Everyone listened and felt safer. Pip's sky blue scarf fluttered as he helped each friend with a smile. 11

One day, Gran Nessa came to visit Pip. 'You see, little one?' she said. 'Your knowledge is helping everyone. The island is safer and happier because you shared your gift.' Pip looked around. He saw Mara fishing with a full net, Tobin sailing with a happy wave, and children playing safely on the shore. His heart felt warm and full. 'Sharing is better than keeping secrets,' he said. 12

From that day on, Pip became the island's trusted helper. He wore his golden clock proudly, and his sky blue scarf seemed to shine brighter. He never missed a chance to help a friend. When someone asked about the tides, Pip would check the clock and give the best advice. The islanders felt safe and happy, knowing that Pip was always there to help. 13

Pip learned that knowledge is a wonderful gift, especially when shared. The golden clock was not just a treasure to keep, but a tool to help others. He realized that helping his friends and keeping them safe was the best feeling in the world. And whenever he saw a friend smile after a safe journey, Pip knew he had made the right choice.
