High in the Green Mountains lives Bao, a panda who loves nothing more than napping in the sun and munching sweet bamboo. Every morning he walks to his favorite grove in the mountain valley, until the day he arrives to find only short stumps and bare ground. Hungry and discouraged, Bao is met by Rusty, a red panda with a leaf behind his ear and an old, smudged map. Rusty offers to help him find a new grove, and the two set off together down the mountain path.
Their search turns into a journey of small kindnesses. A rabbit in a blue neckerchief points them toward the stream, and along the way Bao and Rusty free a young bamboo bush from choking vines. Olive, a wise owl with round spectacles, notices their care for the forest and guides them onward, but only after they clear fallen branches blocking the rabbit's burrow. The rabbit rewards them with a shiny blue feather that marks the way to a hidden valley behind a waterfall, a trail that can only be passed by those who help one another.
The story follows Bao and Rusty as they learn that teamwork makes big problems small and that nature asks for care in return for what it gives. Young readers who enjoy gentle animal tales will find a warm story about friendship, patience, and looking after the places that feed us.

The Panda's Lost Bamboo - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK
High in the Green Mountains, where the mist curls like a sleepy cat, lived a panda named Bao. Bao loved two things: napping in the sun and munching sweet bamboo. Every morning, he walked to his favorite bamboo grove in the mountain valley. The stalks were tall and crunchy, and Bao never grew tired of them. 1
One bright morning, Bao grabbed his small woven basket and hurried to the grove. But when he got there, his round black eyes grew wide. The bamboo was gone! Only short stumps remained, and the ground was bare. Bao's chubby white belly rumbled with hunger. He sat down and let out a sad sigh. 2
Just then, a rustle came from the ferns. Out popped a red panda named Rusty, with a green leaf tucked behind one ear. 'Why the long face, Bao?' asked Rusty, his bushy ringed tail swishing. Bao pointed at the empty stumps. 'My bamboo is lost,' he said. 'I don't know what to do.' 3
Rusty's dark eyes twinkled. 'Don't worry,' he said. 'We'll find you a new bamboo grove. I know these mountains well.' He pulled a tiny cloth satchel from his shoulder. 'I have a map, but it's old and smudged. We'll have to follow clues.' Bao felt a little hopeful. 'You'll help me?' he asked. 'Of course!' said Rusty. 'Teamwork makes big problems small.' 4
The two friends set off down the mountain path. Soon they met a rabbit with a blue neckerchief, nibbling clover. 'Excuse me,' said Rusty politely. 'Have you seen any bamboo groves nearby?' The rabbit's long ears twitched. 'I saw something strange,' she whispered. 'Follow the stream to the old oak tree. But be careful—the path is rocky.' 5
Bao and Rusty thanked the rabbit and followed the stream. The water gurgled over smooth stones. Suddenly, Rusty stopped. 'Look!' he cried. A small bush of bamboo grew beside the water, but it was tangled in vines. 'These vines are choking it,' said Bao. 'Let's free it.' They carefully pulled the vines away, and the bamboo stood tall and green. 6
As they worked, a soft hoot came from above. An owl with round spectacles peered down from a branch. 'Well done, little ones,' she said. 'I am wise old Olive. I see you help the forest.' Bao bowed. 'We're looking for a hidden valley full of bamboo,' he said. Olive nodded. 'I know the place. But first, help the rabbit—her burrow is blocked by fallen branches.' 7
Bao and Rusty hurried back to the rabbit. Her burrow was indeed blocked. 'We'll clear it,' said Bao. He pushed the branches with his strong black legs, and Rusty pulled twigs with his tiny paws. The rabbit watched with wide eyes. 'Thank you!' she squeaked. 'You are kind friends.' When the burrow was clear, the rabbit gave them a gift: a shiny blue feather. 'This will help you find the valley,' she said. 8
Olive the owl flew ahead, leading the way. 'The blue feather is a clue,' she explained. 'It points to the secret path behind the waterfall.' Bao and Rusty followed the stream until they heard a roar. A waterfall tumbled down the cliff, sparkling in the sun. 'Behind it,' said Olive, 'is a narrow trail. Only those who work together can pass.' 9
Bao felt nervous. The waterfall looked loud and wild. But Rusty squeezed his paw. 'We're a team,' he said. 'I'll go first and you follow.' They stepped carefully behind the curtain of water. The path was slippery, but Bao held Rusty's tail, and Rusty held Bao's basket. Slowly and safely, they made it through. 10
On the other side, the trail wound upward. Bao's short legs ached, and his tummy grumbled. 'I'm so hungry,' he moaned. Rusty pointed ahead. 'Look!' he cried. There, bathed in golden sunlight, lay a hidden valley. Bamboo grew everywhere—tall, green, and crunchy. Bao's eyes shone. 'We found it!' he cheered. 11
Bao and Rusty danced with joy. Bao broke off a tender shoot and shared it with Rusty. 'This is the best bamboo ever!' said Bao. 'And you helped me find it.' Rusty smiled. 'We helped each other,' he said. 'And we helped the rabbit and the forest.' They sat together, munching happily in the warm sun. 12
Olive the owl landed beside them. 'You have shown great teamwork,' she said. 'Remember, nature gives us so much. We must protect it.' Bao nodded. 'I will care for this valley,' he promised. 'And I will share it with my friends.' Rusty agreed. 'We can keep the path clear and plant new bamboo shoots.' 13
From that day on, Bao and Rusty visited the hidden valley often. They planted bamboo shoots and cleared away vines. The rabbit came too, and Olive watched from above. The valley grew greener and happier. Bao never lost his bamboo again, because he had friends who helped him care for it. 14
One evening, as the sun set behind the mountains, Bao and Rusty sat on a rock. 'Thank you for helping me,' said Bao. 'I couldn't have found this place alone.' Rusty's ringed tail curled around his friend. 'That's what friends do,' he said. 'Together, we can solve any problem.' 15
And so, in the mountain valley, the panda and the red panda lived happily. They learned that teamwork makes big problems small, and that protecting nature is a joy when shared. Every day, they cared for the forest, and the forest cared for them. The end.
