The Otter's Midnight Train

The Otter's Midnight Train

🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:24

Ollie the otter lives beside a wide, winding river, wearing his red knitted scarf and carrying a green satchel. One moonlit night he hears a soft rumble beneath the ground and follows it to a hidden stone station behind a curtain of ferns, where a sign reads MIDNIGHT TRAIN. There he meets Tilly, an old turtle in a straw sun hat who sweeps the platform and explains that the midnight train stops every night, but the rising river now threatens to flood the little station before the train can arrive.

Ollie wants to help but feels small beside the deep, cold water. Tilly shows him that big things get done one stone at a time: she rolls the heavy stones while Ollie packs mud between them with his webbed paws. When a wave splashes over their half-built wall, they keep working together, and slowly the water slides back down the steps. Their crooked, lumpy wall holds, and the train finally chugs in with windows glowing like fireflies. Ollie rides beneath the river, sees fish swimming past the windows, and returns at sunrise to share hot cocoa with Tilly, telling her the best part was fixing the station with a friend.

The story is written for young children and for adults reading aloud to them. It gently shows how patience and teamwork turn an overwhelming task into something possible, and how shared effort makes an adventure sweeter than the ride itself.

A Chapter from the Book

The Otter's Midnight Train - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Ollie the otter lived by a wide, winding river. He had sleek brown fur, a tan belly, and bright amber eyes that sparkled with curiosity. Every night, he wore his red knitted scarf and carried his green satchel. One evening, while the moon was full, Ollie heard a soft rumble deep under the ground. It sounded like a train! 1

Ollie pressed his ear to the cool riverbank. The rumble grew louder, then faded away. 'A train under the river?' he whispered. His long whiskers twitched with excitement. He followed the sound to a hidden path. There, behind a curtain of ferns, he found a tiny stone station. A sign read: MIDNIGHT TRAIN. 2

At the station, an old turtle named Tilly was sweeping the platform. She wore a straw sun hat tied with a blue ribbon, and round spectacles sat on her nose. 'Welcome, little otter,' she said with a crinkly smile. 'The midnight train stops here every night. But tonight, the river is rising fast.' Ollie's amber eyes grew wide. 3

The river swirled and churned, creeping closer to the little station. Water lapped at the platform steps. 'The train cannot stop if the station is flooded,' Tilly said calmly. 'We must fix it before midnight.' Ollie's heart raced. He wanted to help, but the water looked deep and cold. 'What can I do?' he asked. 4

Tilly pointed to a pile of stones and mud near the track. 'We need to build a wall to keep the water out,' she said. 'I'll move the big stones, and you can pack the mud between them.' Ollie nodded. He scooped up mud with his tiny webbed paws. Tilly pushed the heavy stones with her strong front claws. They worked side by side. 5

The water kept rising. Ollie felt a flutter of worry. 'It's too much!' he cried. Tilly paused and looked at him gently. 'One stone at a time, little friend. That's how big things get done.' Ollie took a deep breath. He packed more mud. Tilly rolled another stone. Slowly, the wall began to grow. 6

As they worked, Ollie's red scarf got splashed with mud. He didn't mind. He was too busy thinking about the train. 'Will it really come?' he asked. Tilly smiled. 'The midnight train always comes,' she said. 'But it needs a dry station and a safe track. We're almost there.' She patted the wall with her wrinkled claw. 7

Suddenly, a big wave splashed over the wall! Ollie gasped. 'Oh no!' But Tilly stayed calm. 'Quick, Ollie! Bring more mud!' Ollie dashed to the riverbank and scooped up a big pawful. He packed it into the gap. Tilly pushed a stone on top. The wave stopped. The wall held. Ollie let out a happy squeak. 8

They kept working, moving stones and mud. Ollie's arms ached, but he didn't stop. Tilly hummed a little tune. 'Teamwork makes the dream work,' she sang. Ollie giggled and joined in. The station floor began to dry. The water slid back down the steps. 'Look!' Ollie cried. 'It's working!' 9

The moon climbed higher in the sky. Ollie and Tilly stepped back to look at their wall. It was crooked and lumpy, but it was strong. The station was dry and safe. 'We did it!' Ollie cheered. Tilly adjusted her spectacles. 'We did it together,' she said. 'That's the best way.' Ollie's amber eyes shone with pride. 10

Just then, a soft whistle echoed from under the ground. The midnight train was coming! Ollie's heart leaped. The ground rumbled. A warm light glowed from the tunnel. The train chugged into the station and stopped with a gentle hiss. Its windows glowed like fireflies. Ollie waved his red scarf in the air. 11

The train doors opened, and a conductor mouse poked out his head. 'All aboard!' he squeaked. Ollie looked at Tilly. 'Will you come with me?' he asked. Tilly chuckled. 'Not tonight, little otter. But you go and enjoy the ride.' Ollie hugged her. 'Thank you for teaching me about teamwork,' he said. Tilly's crinkly smile grew wide. 12

Ollie climbed aboard the train. The seats were soft, and the windows sparkled. As the train chugged away, Ollie waved to Tilly. She waved back with her wrinkled claw. The train glided under the river, and Ollie saw fish swimming by the windows. It was the most magical ride of his life. He felt warm and happy inside. 13

When Ollie returned to the station, the sun was rising. Tilly was waiting with a cup of hot cocoa. 'How was your adventure?' she asked. 'Wonderful!' said Ollie. 'But do you know what was the best part? Fixing the station with you. Big adventures are more fun when friends work together.' Tilly nodded. 'That's a lesson worth keeping.' 14

From that night on, Ollie helped Tilly keep the station safe. He learned to slow down and work as a team. Whenever the river rose, they moved stones and mud together. And every midnight, the train stopped with a cheerful whistle. Ollie knew that no problem was too big when friends faced it side by side. 15

And if you ever visit the riverbank, listen closely. You might hear the rumble of the midnight train. And you might see an otter in a red scarf and a turtle in a straw hat, working together. They'll tell you that adventure is best shared, and that teamwork makes every station a little warmer and dry.
