The Little Eel's Lantern

The Little Eel's Lantern

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Deep in the sparkling blue sea lives Eli, a curious little eel with a glossy teal-green body and tiny amber eyes. One morning he swims farther than ever before and discovers a small, rounded stone that pulses with a soft inner glow. He wraps it in a kelp cord and tucks it into his woven seaweed satchel, certain that because he found it, the lantern-stone belongs to him alone.

News of the glowing stone spreads through the reef, and soon fish, crabs and even a shy octopus come to see its light. When Old Turtle gently suggests that the stone could illuminate the dark passage near the old reef, where many creatures are afraid to swim, Eli hesitates. The stone is his, after all. But when his friend Little Crab needs to cross the passage to visit his grandmother, Eli must decide whether to keep his treasure close or let its light guide someone else.

This gentle children's tale follows Eli as he learns what it means to share something precious and to find courage alongside a friend. Young readers will meet memorable sea characters, explore coral towers and kelp forests, and discover that a light is brightest when it is used to help others. The story suits young children and anyone looking for a warm, simple tale about generosity, bravery and friendship.

The Little Eel's Lantern - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Deep down in the sparkling blue sea, where the water is cool and quiet, lived a little eel named Eli. Eli had a glossy tealgreen body, a pale yellow belly, and tiny round amber eyes. He loved to explore the coral towers and swaying kelp forests near his home. On his back, he carried a woven seaweed satchel with a braided kelp strap. Every day was a new adventure for curious Eli. 1

One morning, Eli swam farther than ever before. He wriggled through a gap between two rocks and found a place he had never seen. The water was darker here, and the sand felt soft and cool. In the distance, a strange, gentle light flickered. Eli's amber eyes grew wide. "What could that be?" he whispered, his little heart beating fast with excitement. 2

Eli followed the flickering light until he reached a small, rounded stone. It was pearly blue-white and pulsed with a soft inner glow. Tiny sparkling flecks danced across its surface, and a warm amber shimmer glowed at its heart. "You're beautiful," Eli said softly. He carefully wrapped the stone in a woven kelp cord and placed it in his satchel. The stone's light made him feel warm and brave. 3

As Eli swam home, he met his friend, Little Crab. Little Crab had a bright coral-red shell, big round black eyes, and a tiny yellow sea-grass bow on one claw. "Why is your bag glowing?" asked Little Crab, clicking his claws. Eli showed him the stone. "It's a glowing stone!" said Eli. "But I found it, so it's mine." Little Crab's eyes grew even rounder with wonder. 4

News of Eli's glowing stone spread quickly through the reef. Fish, crabs, and even a shy octopus came to see it. "It's so bright!" they said. "Can we see it too?" Eli held the stone close. "It's mine," he said, "but you can look." The stone's light danced on their faces, and everyone smiled. Yet Eli kept the stone tucked safely in his satchel, not letting anyone else carry it. 5

That afternoon, Old Turtle swam slowly over to Eli. Her mossy green and brown shell was as wide as a doorway, and her kind dark eyes twinkled. "Little Eli," she said in her gentle voice, "I hear you found a glowing stone. That stone could light the dark passage near the old reef. Many sea creatures are afraid to swim through there because it's so dark and dangerous." Eli listened carefully, his little fins trembling. 6

"But it's my stone," Eli said. "I found it." Old Turtle nodded. "Yes, it is yours," she said. "But think of how many could be helped if you shared its light." Eli looked at the stone in his satchel. It pulsed softly, as if it were listening. He thought about the dark passage and the creatures who were too scared to swim through. His heart felt heavy with doubt. 7

That evening, Eli swam to the dark passage alone. The water grew cold and black. Shadows seemed to move in every corner. He clutched his satchel tightly. "I don't like this," he whispered. The stone's light was bright, but Eli felt small and scared. He turned and swam back home, his ribbon-like tail swishing quickly. He didn't want to go through the passage ever again. 8

The next day, Little Crab came to Eli. "I need to visit my grandmother on the other side of the passage," he said, his big eyes filled with worry. "But I'm too scared to go through the dark. Will you come with me?" Eli looked at his friend's frightened face. He thought of Old Turtle's words. "I'll help you," Eli said bravely. "We'll go together, and my stone will light the way." 9

Eli and Little Crab swam to the entrance of the dark passage. The water was murky and still. Little Crab held Eli's fin with one tiny claw. "I'm scared," he whispered. "Me too," said Eli. "But we'll be all right." Eli opened his satchel, and the glowing stone's light spilled out. It pushed back the shadows, and a warm, bright path appeared before them. "Let's go," said Eli, and they swam forward. 10

As they swam, the stone's light grew brighter and steadier. It lit up the passage walls, showing tiny starfish and colorful anemones. "It's not so scary with light," said Little Crab, his voice full of wonder. Other creatures peeked out from the shadows. A small fish, a shy seahorse, and a family of shrimp saw the light and followed. Soon, a whole parade of sea creatures swam behind Eli and his glowing stone. 11

They reached the other side safely. Little Crab's grandmother was waiting, her eyes wide with surprise. "You made it through the dark passage!" she said. "The glowing stone lit the way," said Little Crab proudly. "Eli shared it with me." The other creatures nodded and smiled. "Thank you, Eli," they said. "Now we can visit our families too." Eli felt a warm glow inside, different from the stone's light. 12

Old Turtle swam up to Eli. "You shared your stone," she said, her kind eyes shining. "That was brave and generous." Eli looked at the stone in his satchel, then at all the happy creatures around him. "It's better when everyone can see," he said. "I want everyone to travel safely." Old Turtle nodded. "Then let's keep the light shining for all." Eli smiled, his amber eyes bright.
