The Hedgehog's Honey Jar

The Hedgehog's Honey Jar

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a sunny meadow full of clover, a small hedgehog named Hazel lives in a cozy burrow under a hawthorn bush. Wearing her moss-green scarf and carrying a woven acorn-cap satchel, she sets out each morning to explore, her cream-tipped brown spines bobbing and her amber eyes sparkling with curiosity. One bright day she finds a glass jar of golden honey near the old oak tree, with a folded note tucked beneath the lid. The note holds a riddle: a stone shaped like a bow waits under the tall pine where the bluebells grow.

On her way, Hazel meets Millie, a grey mouse in a blue vest and red ribbon bow who recognizes the handwriting as that of her friend Rosemary, a rabbit living near the tall pine. Together the two follow the clue, find the bow-shaped stone and a small wooden sign, and trace the winding path to Rosemary's burrow. There they return the lost jar and are welcomed inside for honey biscuits and tea, and Rosemary shows them her garden and a surprise of her own.

The story follows a gentle treasure hunt built on a simple riddle, and it shows young readers how curiosity, careful looking and teamwork can solve a problem and turn strangers into friends. The warm, unhurried telling and its animal characters make it well suited to children at the beginning of independent reading and to adults reading aloud at bedtime.

The Hedgehog's Honey Jar - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a sunny meadow full of clover, a small hedgehog named Hazel lived in a cozy burrow under a hawthorn bush. She wore a moss-green scarf and carried a woven acorn-cap satchel. Every morning she trotted out to explore, her cream-tipped brown spines bobbing. 'What will I find today?' she wondered, sniffing the air with her tiny black nose. Her warm amber eyes sparkled with curiosity. 1

One bright morning, Hazel spotted something shiny near the old oak tree. It was a glass jar filled with golden honey, glowing in the sunlight. A folded piece of paper peeked out from under the lid. 'A note!' she squeaked, her small rounded ears twitching. She carefully opened the jar and pulled out the paper. 'This looks like a puzzle,' she said, her heart beating fast. 2

The note had wiggly writing: 'Under the tall pine, where the bluebells grow, look for a stone that's shaped like a bow.' Hazel tilted her head. 'A stone shaped like a bow? What does that mean?' She tucked the note into her satchel and started toward the pine trees at the edge of the meadow. Her short legs hurried along the path, and her spines rustled as she went. 3

As Hazel passed a berry bush, a tiny voice called out, 'Wait! What's that you're carrying?' A mouse with soft grey fur and large round pink ears popped out. She wore a little blue vest with two round wooden buttons and a red ribbon bow on her head. 'I'm Millie,' she said with a friendly smile. 'Is that a honey jar? I love honey!' 4

Hazel showed Millie the note. Millie's bright dark eyes grew wide. 'I know this writing!' she exclaimed, her whiskers twitching. 'It belongs to my friend, a rabbit named Rosemary. She lives near the tall pine. She must have lost her jar!' Hazel's tiny black nose wiggled. 'Then we should find her. But what about the clue?' Millie grinned. 'Let's follow it together.' 5

The two friends set off, Millie's long thin pink tail swishing behind her. They reached the tall pine, where bluebells nodded in the breeze. 'Now we need a stone shaped like a bow,' Hazel said, scanning the ground. Millie scampered ahead, her large pink ears listening. 'Here!' she called. 'This stone curves just like a bow!' It was half-hidden under a fern. 6

Beside the bow-shaped stone, they found a tiny wooden sign with an arrow pointing left. 'Left!' said Millie. 'That must lead to Rosemary's burrow.' They followed a narrow path through the ferns. Hazel's acorn-cap satchel bounced as she walked. 'I hope Rosemary isn't worried about her jar,' she said. Millie nodded. 'She'll be so happy to get it back.' 7

The path wound around a mossy hill and stopped at a cozy burrow with a round door. A warm light glowed inside. 'This is it!' Millie squeaked. She knocked on the door with her small paw. 'Rosemary! Are you home?' There was a soft thump, and the door creaked open. A tall rabbit with long cream ears and a yellow apron stood there, looking surprised. 8

'Millie!' cried the rabbit, her gentle brown eyes bright. 'And who is your friend?' Hazel stepped forward shyly. 'I'm Hazel. I found your honey jar near the old oak tree.' She held out the jar. Rosemary's pink nose twitched. 'Oh, my honey jar! I thought I'd lost it forever!' She clapped her paws together. 'Please, come in. I have something for you.' 9

Inside the burrow, Rosemary poured warm honey biscuits from a tin. 'I made these this morning,' she said, her fluffy round tail wiggling. 'They're best with a cup of tea.' Hazel and Millie sat on little stools and munched the sweet biscuits. 'How did you find my jar?' Rosemary asked. Hazel told her about the note and the clue. 'You followed it perfectly!' Rosemary laughed. 10

Hazel felt proud. 'I couldn't have done it without Millie,' she said. 'She knew the writing was yours.' Millie's red ribbon bow bobbed as she nodded. 'And Hazel figured out the bow-shaped stone,' she added. Rosemary smiled warmly. 'You make a great team. Curiosity and careful looking brought my jar home.' She poured three cups of honey-sweet tea. 11

After tea, Rosemary showed them her garden. 'I have a surprise for you both,' she said. She led them to a patch of flowers where a small wooden box sat. Inside were two tiny jars of honey, each with a ribbon. 'One for each of you,' Rosemary said. 'To thank you for returning my jar.' Hazel's amber eyes sparkled. 'For me?' she whispered. Millie hugged Rosemary. 12

Hazel tied the little honey jar to her satchel. 'I'll keep it forever,' she said. Millie twirled in her blue vest. 'And we'll come visit you often,' she promised. Rosemary waved goodbye as they started home. 'Remember,' she called, 'if you ever find another mystery, follow the clues!' Hazel and Millie giggled and waved back, their hearts full of friendship. 13

On the way home, Hazel thought about the day. 'I learned that asking questions and looking closely can lead to happy surprises,' she said. Millie agreed. 'And making a new friend is the best surprise of all.' They stopped at the old oak tree. 'This is where it all began,' Hazel said, touching the spot where she found the jar. The meadow hummed with evening birdsong.
