The Hedgehog's Flying Umbrella

The Hedgehog's Flying Umbrella

🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:45

In a cozy corner of the great green forest, a small hedgehog named Pip lives among the ferns and old oak trees, curious about everything yet careful and sometimes a little afraid. One breezy morning he discovers a bright blue umbrella with yellow stars tangled in the undergrowth, and when he touches its handle the umbrella hums and hovers in the air. Pip wants to climb aboard, but his legs feel wobbly and his spines prickle with worry. Olive, a wise old owl in a dark green vest and round spectacles, lands beside him and explains that the umbrella has chosen someone with a brave heart and a careful mind.

Rather than urging Pip to rush ahead, Olive teaches him what courage really means: making good choices even when you feel afraid. Together they spread a map of the forest on a flat stump and plan a route along the river where the wind is gentle and a safe landing is always in sight. They check the sky for storms, and Olive promises to fly alongside him and guide him if he feels unsure. When a stronger gust pushes the umbrella sideways mid-flight, Pip remembers what he has learned, stays calm, and steers gently down toward a sunny clearing.

The story follows a single small journey from fear to confidence, showing young readers that planning, practice and asking for help are part of being brave. Pip's red scarf, his little satchel and Olive's patient guidance give the tale a warm, gentle texture suited to reading aloud. It is a picture-book tale for children at the age when they first meet new experiences with a mixture of excitement and worry, and for the adults who read with them and talk about what it means to try something new.

The Hedgehog's Flying Umbrella - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a cozy corner of the great green forest, where sunlight dripped through leaves like honey, lived a small hedgehog named Pip. He had soft brown spines, a cream-colored face, and big amber eyes that missed nothing. Around his neck he wore a little red scarf, and a tiny satchel hung at his side. Pip was curious about everything, but he was also careful, and sometimes a little afraid. 1

One breezy morning, while hunting for acorns near an old oak tree, Pip found something strange tangled in the ferns. It was an umbrella, bright blue with yellow stars, and it hummed softly as if it were alive. When Pip touched the handle, the umbrella lifted off the ground and hovered in the air. Pip jumped back, his tiny heart thumping. "A flying umbrella?" he whispered. "How can that be?" 2

Pip wanted to climb aboard, but his legs felt wobbly and his spines prickled with worry. What if the wind blew too hard? What if he couldn't steer? He clutched his red scarf and took a deep breath. Just then, a soft voice called from above. "Hello down there, little one. That umbrella has chosen you." It was Olive, the wise old owl, perched on a branch with her round spectacles glinting. 3

Olive fluttered down and landed beside Pip with a gentle thump. Her speckled cream chest rose and fell calmly, and her dark green vest smelled of pine needles. "I see you've found the famous flying umbrella," she said. "It's been waiting for someone with a brave heart and a careful mind." Pip looked up at her big golden eyes. "But I'm scared," he admitted. "What if I make a mistake?" 4

Olive smiled kindly. "Being scared is perfectly fine," she said. "Courage isn't about rushing ahead without thinking. Courage means making good choices, even when you feel afraid." Pip thought about this. He wanted to fly, but he also wanted to be safe. "How do I make good choices?" he asked. Olive tapped her beak with one wing. "First, we plan. Then we practice. And we always check the weather." 5

Olive spread a map of the forest on a flat stump. "Here is your home," she said, pointing with a feather. "And here is the meadow. If we fly along the river, the wind will be gentle, and you can always see a safe place to land." Pip studied the map, his amber eyes wide. He traced the river with one tiny paw. "I like that way," he said. "It looks calm." Olive nodded. "Good choice. Now let's check the sky." 6

They stepped out from under the trees and looked up. The sky was a soft blue with puffy white clouds drifting slowly. A gentle breeze ruffled Pip's scarf. "The wind is light today," Olive observed. "No storms are coming. This is a good day for a first flight." Pip felt a flutter in his belly, but it was a happy flutter now. "I'm ready to try," he said. "But will you come with me?" 7

Olive chuckled. "I can fly alongside you," she said. "My wings are strong, and I know these skies well. If you feel unsure, just look at me and I'll guide you." Pip nodded, feeling braver. He climbed onto the umbrella's handle and held on tight. The umbrella rose a little, bobbing like a friendly boat. "Remember," Olive said, "steer with your feet and lean with the wind. And if you need to stop, just say 'down, please.'" 8

With a soft whoosh, the umbrella lifted off the ground. Pip's tummy flipped as the forest fell away beneath him. He could see the tops of the trees, the winding river, and the meadow beyond. "I'm flying!" he squeaked. Olive soared beside him, her broad wings catching the breeze. "You're doing wonderfully!" she called. "Keep your eyes on the river and follow its curve." Pip did as she said, and the umbrella glided smoothly. 9

For a while, everything was perfect. But then a stronger gust of wind pushed the umbrella sideways. Pip's paws tightened on the handle. "Olive!" he cried. "The wind is too strong!" Olive flew closer. "Stay calm," she said. "Remember your good choices. You can lower the umbrella a little and drift toward that sunny clearing. I'll be right here." Pip took a deep breath and gently pressed down. The umbrella dipped and floated toward the clearing, just as he hoped. 10

They landed softly in the clearing, surrounded by tall grass and wildflowers. Pip's legs were shaking, but he was grinning from ear to ear. "I did it!" he said. "I made a good choice, and I landed safely!" Olive landed beside him and gave him a proud look. "You certainly did," she said. "You felt afraid, but you thought clearly and stayed calm. That is what courage truly is." Pip hugged his red scarf and felt warm inside. 11

After a short rest, Pip was ready to fly again. This time, he felt more confident. He checked the wind, looked at the map, and chose a gentle path back toward home. Olive flew beside him, and together they soared over the river, past the old oak tree, and down to Pip's cozy corner of the forest. The umbrella settled softly on the grass as if it had done this a hundred times.
