Hazel is a small hedgehog with honey-brown fur and glossy spines who lives in a cozy burrow beneath the roots of a great oak tree. Each night she takes her moss green acorn-cap satchel and wanders the forest paths, until one evening a smell of fresh bread leads her to a hollow in the oldest oak, where a miniature bakery glows with golden light. There she meets Luna, a slender moon rabbit in a flour-dusted apron who bakes star-shaped rolls that shine like tiny lanterns for the nighttime animals.
Luna invites Hazel to help knead dough and press out star shapes, but the magic oven suddenly sputters and goes cold, and the animals waiting outside for their warm rolls are left without supper. Luna has forgotten the special ingredient the oven needs, so she and Hazel set off through the moonlit forest to consult the oldest owl, who lives at the top of the tallest pine tree and remembers everything. The owl recalls a song about moonlight, friendship and the warmth of sharing, and teaches it to the two bakers.
Racing back to the bakery, Hazel and Luna sing the song together before the cold oven. The story shows young readers how a difficult problem can be solved by asking for help, listening carefully to those who know more, and working together. It is a gentle tale suited to children who enjoy animal characters, quiet adventure and a warm, hopeful ending, and it reads well aloud at bedtime.

A Chapter from the Book
The Hedgehog and the Moon Baker - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK
Hazel the hedgehog lived in a cozy burrow under the roots of a great oak tree. She had warm honey-brown fur, a creamcoloured face, and a back covered in short glossy spines with pale tips. Every night, she carried her moss green acorn-cap satchel and explored the forest paths. One evening, a delicious smell of fresh bread drifted through the trees and tickled her small black nose. 1
Hazel sniffed the air and her dark round eyes grew wide. 'Fresh bread at night?' she whispered. She followed the yummy smell past ferns and mushrooms, her tiny paws pattering softly on the moss. The scent grew stronger and sweeter, like warm honey and toasted nuts. It led her to the oldest oak tree in the forest, where a tiny golden light glowed in a hollow. 2
Inside the hollow, Hazel found a miniature bakery. A tall, slender moon rabbit with pale silver-white fur and gentle golden eyes smiled from behind a counter. The rabbit wore a flour-dusted sky-blue apron with tiny embroidered stars and small round spectacles. 'Welcome to my night bakery,' the moon rabbit said softly. 'I bake glowing star-shaped rolls for all the nighttime animals.' 3
Hazel watched in wonder as the moon rabbit pulled a tray of star-shaped rolls from a magic oven. Each roll glowed like a tiny lantern, filling the bakery with warm light. 'They're beautiful!' Hazel gasped. The moon rabbit offered her a roll, still warm and soft. 'My name is Luna,' the rabbit said. 'Would you like to help me bake?' Hazel nodded eagerly, her spines quivering with excitement. 4
Together, Hazel and Luna kneaded dough and shaped it into stars. Luna showed Hazel how to sprinkle stardust on top. 'The magic oven needs a special warmth to make the rolls glow,' Luna explained. Hazel's small paws were perfect for pressing the star shapes. Soon, the bakery was filled with the happy sounds of mixing and shaping, and the shelves were piled high with glowing rolls. 5
But suddenly, the magic oven made a strange sputtering sound. Its warm orange glow flickered and faded to a dull grey. 'Oh no!' Luna cried. 'The oven has gone cold!' She tried turning the knobs and checking the pipes, but nothing worked. Hazel's heart sank. Outside, the nighttime animals were already gathering, waiting for their warm star rolls. 'What will we do?' Hazel asked. 6
Luna sighed and wiped her floury paws on her apron. 'The oven needs a special ingredient to keep its magic alive,' she said. 'But I've forgotten what it is.' Hazel thought hard, her little nose twitching. 'Maybe someone in the forest knows,' she suggested. 'Who is the wisest creature around?' Luna's golden eyes brightened. 'The oldest owl! She lives in the tallest pine tree, and she remembers everything.' 7
Hazel and Luna set off through the moonlit forest. They hurried past sleepy foxes and dozing badgers, following a winding path to the tallest pine tree. At the top, in a cozy nest lined with soft feathers, sat the oldest owl. She was plump and stately, with grey-brown feathers streaked with white and huge amber eyes behind tiny half-moon reading glasses. A deep plum knitted scarf was wrapped around her neck. 8
'Excuse me, wise owl,' Hazel called politely. 'Our magic oven has gone cold, and we need a special ingredient to make it glow again. Do you know what it is?' The old owl blinked slowly and adjusted her glasses. 'Ah, the magic oven,' she said in a slow, creaky voice. 'I remember a song... but my memory is a little foggy. Let me think.' She hummed a few notes, then stopped. 'Yes, there was a song that made the oven glow.' 9
The old owl cleared her throat and began to sing in a soft, wavery voice. The song was about moonlight, friendship, and the warmth of sharing. As she sang, Hazel and Luna listened closely, memorizing every word and every gentle tune. 'That's the special ingredient,' the owl explained. 'The oven needs the owl song to wake its magic. Now hurry, little ones. The night is passing.' 10
Hazel and Luna raced back to the bakery, breathless and excited. The nighttime animals were still waiting patiently outside. Luna lit a small candle, and they stood before the cold oven. 'Ready?' Luna asked. Hazel nodded. Together, they sang the owl song, their voices blending in the quiet night. At first, nothing happened. Then a tiny spark flickered inside the oven. 11
As they sang the last note, the magic oven burst into a warm, golden glow. The star rolls on the tray began to shine brightly. 'It worked!' Hazel cheered. The oven hummed happily, filling the bakery with delicious warmth. Luna hugged Hazel tightly. 'You found the missing ingredient,' she said. 'The owl song and our teamwork brought the magic back.' The nighttime animals cheered as they received their glowing rolls. 12
From that night on, Hazel visited the night bakery often. She helped Luna bake star rolls and learned new songs from the old owl. The moon rabbit and the hedgehog became the best of friends. Luna even gave Hazel a tiny star-shaped apron to match her own. 'You're my official baking helper,' Luna said with a smile. Hazel's heart felt as warm as the magic oven. 13
One evening, as they shared a fresh roll under the stars, Hazel thought about how much had changed. She had followed a yummy smell and found a wonderful friend. 'I'm so glad I followed that bread smell,' she said. Luna laughed softly. 'And I'm glad you did too.
