The Girl and the Whispering Whale

🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:15

Lily is a curious girl in a yellow raincoat who loves exploring new places. When she arrives at a small coastal village full of crooked houses and bobbing boats, she notices something no one else seems to hear: a low, humming melody drifting over the water. While fishermen mend nets and old Mrs. Pebble sweeps her shop steps, Lily follows the sound to the harbor and discovers a gentle whale with indigo skin, silver speckles and kind amber eyes, singing songs that carry the village's forgotten past.

With her notebook and pencil, Lily begins writing down the whale's stories of hardy fishermen, wild storms and safe harbors. She turns to Grandpa Finn, a retired sailor who has lived by the sea for seventy years, and together they uncover memories the village had let slip away. Their search leads them to Mrs. Pebble, the librarian with a ring of jangling keys, and to a dusty sailors' library that has been locked for years. Lily believes the stories should be shared, and she sets out to bring the villagers together to restore the place where those tales belong.

The book follows Lily as she listens, records and gathers a community around the songs of the sea. It is a quiet story about curiosity, memory and the value of passing stories from one generation to the next, and about how one attentive child can help a whole village remember who it is. Young readers who enjoy gentle seaside adventures and tales of friendship between people and animals will find much to treasure here.

The Girl and the Whispering Whale - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Lily skipped along the cliff path above the little coastal village. Her yellow raincoat flapped in the salty wind, and her red rubber boots tapped a happy rhythm on the stones. She carried a canvas satchel with a notebook inside and a pencil tucked behind her ear. The village below had crooked houses and a harbor full of bobbing boats. Lily loved exploring new places, and this one smelled of seaweed and adventure. 1

In the village square, fishermen mended nets and old Mrs. Pebble swept the steps of a small shop. Lily waved to everyone, but they were too busy to notice. Then, above the cry of gulls and the slap of waves, Lily heard something else. A low, humming melody drifted over the water. It was soft and sad and beautiful all at once. Lily tilted her head and listened carefully. Nobody else seemed to hear it. 2

Lily followed the sound down to the harbor. The melody grew clearer, like a song made of sea and stories. She sat on the wooden dock, dangling her boots over the water, and closed her eyes. The tune seemed to tell of ships and storms and brave sailors. When she opened her eyes, she saw ripples spreading in a quiet cove. Something big was moving out there, just beneath the surface. 3

That evening, Lily asked Grandpa Finn about the strange melody. He was a retired sailor with a white beard and a brass compass around his neck. He frowned and shook his head. "I've lived here seventy years, and I've never heard such a thing," he said. But his sea-blue eyes twinkled, just a little. Lily decided to investigate. She packed her notebook and pencil and set out early the next morning. 4

At dawn, Lily rowed a small boat into the cove. The water was calm and glassy. Suddenly, a gentle whale rose beside her, its indigo skin speckled with silver. It had kind amber eyes and a strand of sea-glass beads tangled near one fin. The whale sang, and Lily heard stories in the song. She pulled out her notebook and began to write. 5

Day after day, Lily returned to the cove. The whale sang of hardy fishermen and their sturdy boats, of wild storms and safe harbors. Each song was a story from the village's past. Lily wrote them all down, page after page. The whale's amber eyes seemed to smile as it sang. It wore a delicate strand of sea-glass beads that caught the light. Lily listened with her whole heart. 6

One afternoon, Grandpa Finn followed Lily to the cove. He hid behind a rock and watched. When the whale sang, his mouth fell open. "That's the old whaling song," he whispered. "My grandfather used to sing it!" He stepped out, and the whale sang just for him. Grandpa Finn wiped a tear from his eye. "I'd forgotten," he said. "I'd forgotten so much." 7

Lily showed her notebook to Grandpa Finn. "We should share these stories," she said. "Everyone should hear them." Grandpa Finn nodded slowly. He told her about the old sailors' library in the village, a dusty room full of forgotten books and maps. "It's been locked for years," he said. "Nobody uses it anymore." Lily's eyes lit up. "Then let's open it again!" she declared. 8

They went to see Mrs. Pebble, the village librarian. She was a short, round woman with a teal cardigan and a ring of jangling keys. When Lily told her about the whale's songs, Mrs. Pebble raised an eyebrow. But when she heard the stories, her sharp eyes softened. "I remember those tales," she said. "My father told them to me." She pulled out a dusty key. "Let's see what we can do." 9

Mrs. Pebble led them to a small building with a faded sign. Inside, the sailors' library was dusty and dark. Cobwebs hung from the shelves, and books lay in forgotten piles. But Lily saw treasure everywhere: maps, logbooks, and sea charts. "We can fix this," she said. Grandpa Finn rolled up his sleeves. Mrs. Pebble jangled her keys. "I'll gather the villagers," she said. "We'll need many hands." 10

The next morning, the villagers came with brooms and dusters. They swept and scrubbed and sorted. Grandpa Finn polished a ship's wheel, and Mrs. Pebble stacked books on shelves. Lily read aloud from her notebook, and the whale's stories filled the room. People smiled as they worked, remembering their own families' tales. The library began to glow with warmth and laughter. 11

The whale swam close to the harbor and sang a new song. This one was full of hope and friendship, and its melody floated through the village. More and more people heard it and came to help. They brought old photographs and sea shells to decorate the shelves. Lily wrote down every new story she heard. The library was coming back to life, and the whole village felt closer together. 12

Finally, the sailors' library was ready. Mrs. Pebble hung a new sign, and Grandpa Finn placed his brass compass on a special shelf. Lily stood by the window, watching the sea. She heard the whale's song one last time, a gentle goodbye. She knew the stories would live on in the library. And she knew that listening had made it all happen.
