Maya lives on a farm with a big red barn and a field of yellow sunflowers, and music is her greatest joy. She wears a silver whistle around her neck, sings to the chickens and hums to the cows, and the farm is her favorite place in the world. One sunny day she hears a strange, wobbly 'hee-haw' coming from the barn and discovers Pedro, the grey donkey, humming silly little tunes to himself. When Pedro grows embarrassed, Maya tells him his singing is special and dreams up a farm concert where every animal can share its own sound.

Henrietta the hen spreads the news, and the cows, sheep, ducks and Barnaby the goat all practice their moos, baas and bleats. Pedro, however, stays hidden behind a hay bale, convinced his voice is too silly and that everyone will laugh at him. Through Maya's patience and encouragement, and a quiet talk under the stars, Pedro begins to wonder whether being different might actually be a gift.

The story follows a gentle farmyard community as it prepares for a night of music and shows young readers how encouragement and friendship can help a shy character find the courage to share what makes him unique. It is suited to children beginning to read longer stories and to parents or teachers looking for a warm tale about confidence, kindness and accepting differences.

The Girl and the Singing Donkey - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Maya lived on a farm with a big red barn and a field of yellow sunflowers. She loved music more than anything. She wore a silver whistle around her neck and blew it to make up little tunes. Every morning, she sang to the chickens and hummed to the cows. The farm was her favorite place in the whole world. 1

One sunny day, Maya heard a strange sound coming from the barn. It went 'hee-haw, hee-haw' in a funny, wobbly way. She peeked inside and saw Pedro, the grey donkey, with his long floppy ears. He was humming to himself, making silly singing sounds. Maya giggled. 'Pedro, you have a funny voice!' she said. 2

Pedro looked shy and stopped humming. His white muzzle twitched, and he shook his dark tuft of hair. 'Don't be embarrassed,' Maya said kindly. 'I think your singing is special.' Pedro's big brown eyes blinked. He gave a small, shy smile. Maya's gap-toothed grin spread wide. 'I have an idea!' she shouted, and her curly buns bounced. 3

Maya ran to find Henrietta the hen. Henrietta was plump and white, with a bright red comb and a blue polka-dot headscarf. 'Henrietta,' Maya said, 'we should have a farm concert! Everyone can share their sounds.' Henrietta clucked excitedly. 'What a wonderful idea! I will spread the news to all the animals. We will be the best band on the farm!' 4

Henrietta strutted around the farm, clucking the news. 'Concert today! Concert today!' she announced. The cows mooed, the sheep baaed, and the ducks quacked. Barnaby the goat, with his shaggy cream coat and purple scarf, leaped with joy. 'I will bleat in funny low tones!' he said. Everyone was excited to share their special sounds. 5

Maya set up a stage in the barn. She hung colorful ribbons and placed hay bales for seats. Pedro watched quietly from the corner. He wanted to join but felt shy. 'Will you sing in the concert?' Maya asked him. Pedro shuffled his sturdy legs and looked down. 'My sounds are too silly,' he mumbled. 'Everyone will laugh at me.' 6

Maya put her hand on Pedro's neck. 'Your sounds are special,' she said. 'I laughed because I liked them.' Pedro's ears perked up. He gave a little nod. 'Okay,' he whispered. 'I will try.' Maya gave him a big hug. Then she blew her whistle to gather all the animals for practice. The barn filled with excited noises. 7

The animals practiced their sounds. Henrietta clucked a rhythmic beat: 'Cluck-cluck-cluck!' The cows mooed low, and the sheep baaed high. Barnaby bleated in funny low tones and leaped around. Pedro stood at the back, humming quietly. Maya listened and smiled. 'Pedro,' she called, 'let us hear your song!' But Pedro hid behind a hay bale. 8

Barnaby teased Pedro kindly. 'Come on, donkey, show us your funny voice!' Pedro shook his head and stayed hidden. Maya said, 'Let's give Pedro time. Everyone has their own way.' The animals nodded. They practiced again, and Henrietta kept them all in time. The barn was full of happy sounds, but Pedro still felt nervous. 9

That evening, Maya found Pedro alone by the fence. The stars twinkled above. 'I'm scared,' Pedro admitted. 'My singing is different.' Maya sat beside him. 'Different is good,' she said. 'Your voice made me smile. That's a talent.' Pedro looked at her with his gentle brown eyes. 'Do you really think so?' he asked. Maya nodded. 'I know so.' 10

On the night of the concert, the barn was packed with animals. Henrietta welcomed everyone. The cows mooed, the sheep baaed, and Barnaby bleated and leaped. Then it was Pedro's turn. He walked to the stage, his bell jingling softly. He took a deep breath and began to sing. Out came a beautiful, wobbly melody that filled the barn. 11

The animals gasped. Pedro's voice was wonderful! He sang high and low, and the notes danced in the air. Henrietta clucked along, Barnaby bleated, and soon all the animals joined in. The barn was filled with joyful music. Maya blew her whistle, and everyone cheered. Pedro's shyness melted away, and he sang louder and happier than ever. 12

Pedro finished with a long, lovely note. The barn erupted in cheers. 'Encore! Encore!' shouted the animals. Pedro's ears wiggled with joy. He sang again, and this time, all the animals sang with him. The farm filled with happy music, and everyone danced and laughed. Maya hugged Pedro. 'You are the star!' she said. Pedro blushed under his grey fur. 13

After the concert, the animals gathered around Pedro. 'Your voice is amazing!' said Henrietta. 'You surprised us all!' said Barnaby. Pedro smiled shyly. 'Thank you,' he said. 'I didn't know I could sing like that.' Maya beamed. 'Everyone has unexpected talents,' she said. 'You just have to be brave enough to share them.' The animals nodded in agreement. 14

From that day on, Pedro sang every morning. His voice echoed across the farm, and the animals loved it. Maya learned that everyone, even a shy donkey, has a special gift. The farm was always full of music and laughter. Maya blew her whistle, and Pedro sang along. They made a perfect team, and the farm was a happier place than ever before. 15

And so, the girl and the singing donkey became the best of friends. They held concerts every season, and animals came from all around to hear Pedro's wonderful voice. Maya learned that you should never judge a talent by its first sound. With kindness and courage, even a funny hee-haw can become a beautiful song.
