🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:28

Lily is a curious girl with light brown skin, wavy chestnut braids and a yellow raincoat that flaps in the wind. On a rainy afternoon she follows a narrow path behind her house, squeezes through a gap in a wall of thick vines and discovers a hidden valley: a quiet green place with a sparkling stream, flowers of every color and a soft mist in the air. There she meets Silvermane, a slender unicorn with a gleaming silver coat, deep violet eyes and a single spiraled horn. He guards the valley and asks Lily to promise that she will always tell him the truth.

The two become fast friends, but Silvermane carries a worry: the thin braided cord around his neck once held a magic bell whose chime keeps the valley strong, and a magpie with a red ribbon on his leg stole it. Lily wants to help, yet she is hiding something. She saw where the magpie hid the bell but stayed silent because she was afraid Silvermane would think she had helped the thief. The story follows her struggle with that secret, her decision to speak honestly, and the plan she and Silvermane carry out to win the bell back from a bird who loves sparkly things.

The book is written for young readers and for adults reading aloud to them. It explores honesty, the courage it takes to admit a mistake, forgiveness and the difference between taking something and earning a friend through kindness. Its gentle fantasy setting and clear, simple language make it an accessible story about trust and friendship.

A Chapter from the Book

The Girl and the Silver Unicorn - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Lily was a curious girl with light brown skin, wavy chestnut hair in two braids, and a yellow raincoat that flapped in the wind. One rainy afternoon, she followed a narrow path behind her house. The path twisted through tall ferns and under low branches. Lily's red rubber boots splashed in puddles, and her hazel eyes sparkled with excitement. She had never seen this path before, and she wondered where it might lead. 1

The path ended at a wall of thick vines, but Lily noticed a small gap just her size. She squeezed through and gasped. Before her lay a secret valley, green and quiet, with a sparkling stream and flowers of every color. A gentle mist hung in the air, and the grass felt soft under her boots. Lily stood still, her heart beating fast. She had found a place no one else knew about. 2

Then Lily saw something shimmering near the stream. It was a unicorn, tall and slender, with a gleaming silver coat and a flowing silver mane and tail. His deep violet eyes watched her calmly, and a single spiraled horn glowed softly on his forehead. Around his neck hung a thin braided leather cord, but it held no bell. Lily's breath caught. "Hello," she whispered. "I'm Lily." 3

The unicorn stepped closer, his silver hooves making no sound. "I am Silvermane," he said, his voice like wind chimes. "This valley is hidden, and I guard it. How did you find your way here?" Lily told him about the path and the gap in the vines. Silvermane nodded slowly. "You must be honest with me, Lily. Trust is important here. Will you promise to always tell me the truth?" 4

Lily promised, and Silvermane smiled. He showed her the valley's wonders: a waterfall that sang, flowers that glowed at dusk, and a tree that dropped honey-sweet fruit. Lily laughed and ran through the grass, and Silvermane trotted beside her. They became friends quickly, sharing secrets and stories. Lily forgot about the world outside. But Silvermane often glanced at his empty cord and sighed. 5

One day, Lily asked about the cord. Silvermane's violet eyes grew sad. "It held a magic bell," he said. "Its chime keeps the valley's magic strong. But a magpie stole it. I saw a flash of black and white feathers and a tiny red ribbon on his leg. Without the bell, the valley will slowly fade." Lily's heart sank. "We must get it back!" she said bravely. 6

They searched the valley, but the magpie was clever and hid well. Lily spotted a glint of silver near a thorn bush. "There!" she cried. But when they reached it, the bell was gone. Silvermane looked worried. "The magpie is quick. We need a plan." Lily thought hard. "I saw a red ribbon on his leg. Maybe we can find his nest." They decided to search again the next day. 7

That night, Lily couldn't sleep. She thought about the bell and the magpie. Then she remembered: earlier, she had seen a shiny object in the magpie's beak. She had followed him to a tall oak tree and watched him hide something in a hole. She had meant to tell Silvermane, but she was afraid he'd think she had helped the magpie. Now she felt guilty. 8

The next morning, Lily's tummy felt fluttery. She knew she had to tell Silvermane the truth. "Silvermane," she said, her voice shaky, "I saw the magpie hide the bell in a tree. I didn't tell you because I was scared. I'm sorry." Silvermane looked at her for a long moment. "Thank you for telling me, Lily. Honesty is the first step to trust." 9

Silvermane forgave her, and they set off together. Lily led the way to the tall oak tree. The magpie was there, perched on a branch, the silver bell glinting in his beak. "Please give it back," Lily called. "It's not yours." The magpie tilted his head. "It sparkles! I like sparkly things." Lily had an idea. "If you return it, I'll bring you shiny pebbles from the stream." 10

The magpie's bright eyes gleamed. "Shiny pebbles?" He hopped closer. "And you'll be my friend?" Lily nodded. "Yes, but you must promise not to steal again." The magpie thought, then dropped the bell into Lily's hands. "Deal!" he squawked. Silvermane hung the bell on his cord, and it chimed sweetly. The valley glowed with renewed magic. The magpie, whose name was Raven, fluttered down to join them. 11

Silvermane turned to Lily. "You were honest about your mistake, and you helped fix it. That is true friendship." Lily smiled, her freckled nose crinkling. "I learned that telling the truth is always best, even when it's hard." Raven nodded. "And I learned that stealing doesn't make friends. Being kind does." They all laughed, and the bell chimed again. 12

From that day on, Lily visited the valley often. She brought shiny pebbles for Raven, who kept his promise and became a helpful friend. Silvermane and Lily grew closer than ever. He taught her about the valley's magic, and she taught him about the world outside. They trusted each other completely, because they always spoke the truth. The magic bell chimed happily, keeping the valley safe and bright. 13

One sunny afternoon, Lily sat beside Silvermane by the stream. "I'm glad I found you," she said. "And I'm glad you trusted me, even when I made a mistake." Silvermane nuzzled her shoulder. "Trust is like a bridge," he said. "It's built one honest stone at a time." Lily thought about that.
