The Girl and the Sea Garden - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Maya loved the sea more than anything. Every morning, she pulled on her yellow swimsuit with white stripes, pushed her blue goggles up on her forehead, and ran down to the beach. She would swim for hours, exploring the rocks and chasing little fish. But one day, she found something she had never seen before. 1

Beyond the last rock, the water sparkled with colors she had never imagined. Maya swam closer and gasped. A garden grew right on the ocean floor! Bright pink seaweed swayed like ribbons, and orange coral branched like trees. Tiny fish darted between the leaves, and a sign made of shells read: Welcome to the Sea Garden. 2

A flash of orange zoomed past her nose. It was a seahorse with a curled tail and bright yellow spots. "Hi! I'm Pip!" it chirped, its tiny fins fluttering. "You're just in time for our yearly celebration! But oh no—look!" Pip pointed a long snout toward the garden. Some plants were bent and broken, and the pretty colors looked dull. 3

Pip swam in quick circles. "A big storm came through last night! The celebration is tomorrow, and everything is a mess!" Maya looked around. "We can fix this," she said. "But we need help." Pip nodded. "I'll gather everyone! I'm the fastest messenger in the sea!" And off he zipped, his curly tail waving behind him. 4

Soon, a large green turtle glided over. She wore round glasses and had a mossy shell. "Hello, I'm Shelly," she said slowly. "I tend this garden. I know just how to replant and care for the broken stems." Maya smiled. "Great! I have tools in my satchel." Shelly nodded wisely. "But we'll need more help to finish before the party." 5

Just then, eight wiggly arms popped out from behind a rock. "Did someone say help?" asked a purple octopus with a red bow on her head. "I'm Inky! I can tie, lift, and fix things all at once!" She waved her arms, and they tangled together. "Oops!" she giggled. "I'm a little clumsy, but I try hard." 6

Pip led the team to the worst spot, where tall purple seaweed had fallen over. "These need to stand up straight for the celebration," Shelly said. "But they're too heavy for me." Maya thought for a moment. "Inky, can you lift them?" Inky wrapped her arms around the seaweed. "I'll try!" she said, and with a big pull, she hoisted the plants upright. 7

Shelly showed Maya how to replant the broken coral. "Gently now," she said, her half-closed eyes kind. "Pat the sand around the roots." Maya used her small shovel from her satchel. Pip darted back and forth, calling out, "More sand here! A little to the left!" His bright orange body was easy to spot in the blue water. 8

Inky tied the seaweed to small rocks with her nimble arms. "This is fun!" she said, but then she tangled herself in a long green ribbon. "Help!" she laughed. Maya swam over and untangled her. "You're doing great, Inky." Inky beamed. "Thanks! I'll be more careful." She went back to tying, humming a happy tune. 9

The garden began to look better, but there was still so much to do. Pip spotted a whole row of seashell flowers that had lost their petals. "Oh no! These are the decorations for the party!" he cried. Maya looked at her friends. "We can do this if we work together. Shelly, you know how to fix the flowers. Inky, you can tie them back. Pip, you can find the missing petals." 10

Shelly gently placed each petal on the flowers. "There," she said. "A little love and care, and they'll bloom again." Inky's arms worked quickly, tying each petal in place. Pip found a pile of petals under a rock and brought them over. Maya helped pat the sand and clear the weeds. Slowly, the seashell flowers began to sparkle. 11

The sun began to set, and the water turned golden. "We're almost done!" Pip cheered. But then Inky tried to lift a heavy rock and slipped. "Oops!" she cried, tumbling into the coral. Maya rushed over. "Are you okay?" Inky nodded, a little embarrassed. "I'm fine. Just clumsy." Maya smiled. "That's okay. We all need help sometimes." 12

With everyone's help, the last plant was fixed. The garden glowed with color. "We did it!" Maya shouted. Shelly smiled her gentle smile. "We did it together. Each of us helped in our own way." Pip did a happy flip. "I'll race you to the celebration!" Inky laughed. "I'll try to keep up!" And they all swam toward the party. 13

The yearly celebration was the most beautiful ever. Lantern fish lit up the garden, and music played from a shell band. All the sea creatures came to dance and sing. Maya danced with Pip, Shelly, and Inky. "You saved our garden!" said a little crab. Maya shook her head. "We saved it together." 14

As the stars came out, Shelly gave Maya a tiny shell necklace. "Thank you for your help," she said. "Remember, healthy oceans need everyone to cooperate. Big or small, fast or slow, we all have a part to play." Maya hugged her friends. "I'll never forget." 15

Maya swam home with a happy heart. She knew she would visit the sea garden again soon. And every time she saw a seahorse, a turtle, or an octopus, she smiled. Because now she knew that when we work together, we can fix anything—even a broken garden under the sea.
