The Girl and the Rescue Dog

The Girl and the Rescue Dog

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Emma is a curious girl with chestnut-brown braids and hazel eyes who has been waiting all week to visit the animal shelter with her mum. Among the rows of kennels, she notices Biscuit, a medium-sized older dog with golden-tan shaggy fur and gentle brown eyes, lying quietly in his bed. A volunteer explains that Biscuit has been at the shelter for a long time and needs a friend. Emma feels an immediate connection and begins visiting him every day after school.

As Emma spends time with Biscuit, she learns how to care for an older dog: gentle, slow walks, brushing his shaggy fur, making sure he has fresh water, and allowing plenty of rest. She reads aloud to him while he rests his head on her knee, and the shelter feels warmer with Biscuit by her side. When Emma brings her dad to meet Biscuit, he agrees that Biscuit is a wonderful dog, and the family decides to adopt him. They prepare by buying a soft bed, a red collar with a brass tag, bowls, a brush, and a special toy for older dogs.

The story follows Emma through the adoption process, from filling out papers to bringing Biscuit home and helping him settle in. It highlights the importance of kindness, patience, and responsibility toward animals, especially older ones who need gentle care. Young readers who love animals will learn what it takes to care for a pet and understand the joy of giving an older dog a loving home.

The Girl and the Rescue Dog - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Emma skipped along the sidewalk, her red sneakers tapping a happy beat. She wore her yellow raincoat-style jacket over a striped blue-and-white T-shirt. Her chestnut-brown braids bounced, and her hazel eyes sparkled with curiosity. Today, her mum was taking her somewhere special: the animal shelter. Emma had been waiting all week for this visit. She couldn't wait to meet the dogs and cats. 1

The shelter was a bright, friendly place with rows of cozy kennels. Mum, wearing her green cardigan and round glasses, smiled as Emma looked around. 'Remember, Emma,' Mum said gently, 'we're here to visit and maybe find a dog who needs a home.' Emma nodded, her freckled nose twitching with excitement. She heard soft barks and happy yips from every corner. 2

As Emma walked past the kennels, one dog caught her eye. He was a medium-sized dog with golden-tan shaggy fur and lighter cream patches on his chest and paws. His floppy ears drooped, and a few grey whiskers dotted his muzzle. He lay quietly in his bed, his big warm brown eyes watching Emma with a gentle, sleepy expression. Emma's heart melted. 'Hello, boy,' she whispered. 3

The dog thumped his tail softly against his bed. A volunteer told Emma his name was Biscuit, and he was an older dog who had been at the shelter for a long time. 'He's very sweet, but he needs a friend,' the volunteer said. Emma knelt down and spoke softly to Biscuit. He sniffed her hand and gave it a tiny lick. 'I think he likes you,' Mum said with a smile. 4

Emma visited Biscuit every day after school. She learned that older dogs need gentle exercise, so they took short, slow walks around the shelter's garden. Biscuit sniffed every flower and wagged his tail. 'Good boy, Biscuit,' Emma said, giving him a gentle pat. The volunteer showed her how to brush his shaggy fur and make sure he had fresh water. Emma listened carefully and took her job seriously. 5

Emma also learned that rest was important for older dogs. Biscuit loved to curl up on his soft bed after their walks. Emma would sit beside him and read aloud from her favorite books. Sometimes Biscuit would rest his head on her knee and close his eyes. 'You're a good listener,' Emma whispered. The shelter felt warmer and happier with Biscuit by her side. 6

One afternoon, Emma brought her dad to meet Biscuit. Dad wore his blue flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He grinned broadly when Biscuit wagged his tail. 'He looks like a wonderful dog,' Dad said. Emma's eyes lit up. 'Do you think we could adopt him?' she asked. Dad knelt down to pet Biscuit. 'Let's talk to Mum,' he said. 'I think it's a great idea.' 7

At home, Emma and her family talked about what Biscuit would need. Mum made a list: a soft bed, food and water bowls, a collar and a tag, and a brush for his shaggy fur. 'And lots of love,' Emma added. Dad nodded. 'We'll also need to make sure he gets gentle exercise and plenty of rest,' he said. Emma smiled. She couldn't wait to bring Biscuit home. 8

The next day, Emma and her dad went to the pet store. They picked out a soft, round bed for Biscuit. Dad chose a red collar with a shiny brass tag. Emma found a brush and a special toy for older dogs. 'Biscuit will love this,' she said. At home, they set up a cozy corner in the living room. Dad built a little wooden stand for Biscuit's bowls. 9

Emma helped Mum fill out the adoption papers. She wrote Biscuit's name carefully and drew a little heart next to it. The shelter volunteer smiled. 'Biscuit is a lucky dog,' she said. Emma shook her head. 'No, I'm the lucky one,' she replied. Mum put an arm around Emma. 'You've shown him so much kindness,' she said. 'That's what every animal deserves.' 10

Finally, the day came to bring Biscuit home. Emma walked into the shelter with the red collar and brass tag. Biscuit's ears perked up when he saw her. She gently fastened the collar around his neck. 'Welcome to the family, Biscuit,' she said. Biscuit gave a happy little woof and wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. The volunteer waved goodbye as they left. 11

Biscuit trotted into his new home and sniffed every corner. He found his soft bed and circled around three times before curling up. Emma laughed. 'That's your spot, Biscuit,' she said. Dad filled his bowls with fresh water and food. Mum gave him a gentle pat. 'He looks right at home,' she said. Emma sat beside Biscuit and stroked his floppy ears. 12

From that day on, Emma and Biscuit were best friends. Every morning, they took a slow walk around the neighborhood. Biscuit sniffed the bushes and greeted the neighbors with a friendly wag. After their walk, Biscuit rested while Emma did her homework. In the afternoon, they played gentle games in the backyard. Emma learned to read Biscuit's signals: when he was tired, they rested; when he was playful, they played. 13

One evening, Emma sat on the porch with Biscuit's head in her lap. She thought about how much her life had changed. 'You know, Biscuit,' she said softly, 'you taught me that every animal deserves kindness and love.' Biscuit's warm brown eyes looked up at her, and he gave her hand a gentle lick. Emma smiled. She knew they would be friends forever.
