Lila lives in a cozy town where the sun always seems to shine on her street. With her curly dark-brown hair in two bouncy buns, her freckles, and her red sneakers, she treats every day as a new adventure. One sunny morning, while carrying a basket of ripe red apples into her backyard, she notices something tiny dart behind a flowerpot. What she finds is a little pale-gray mouse named Pip, no bigger than her palm, with a blue ribbon around its tail and long whiskers that glow in every color of the rainbow.
Pip loves to paint but is too small to paint big things, and Lila has an idea: they will paint together. Starting on a sheet of paper and then moving to the long, plain wall at the back of the garden, the two new friends gather red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet paints and begin a mural for everyone to see. As neighbors stop to watch, one person frowns at the strange mouse with rainbow whiskers. Pip answers that being different is special, and Lila stands by her friend.
The story follows Lila and Pip from their first shy greeting to the shared work of filling a wall with color, showing young readers how friendship grows when differences are welcomed rather than feared. It is a gentle tale for children and for anyone reading aloud to them, offering a simple lesson about cooperation, kindness, and the idea that what makes someone different can be exactly what they have to give.

A Chapter from the Book
The Girl and the Rainbow Mouse - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK
Lila lived in a cozy town where the houses stood in a row and the sun always seemed to shine on her street. She had warm light-brown skin, curly dark-brown hair in two bouncy puffy buns, and big round hazel eyes full of wonder. Freckles danced across her nose, and she wore a bright yellow t-shirt with a small sun print, blue denim overalls, and red sneakers that tapped as she walked. Every day was a new adventure for Lila. 1
One sunny morning, Lila skipped into her backyard with a basket of ripe red apples. She loved to watch the butterflies and listen to the birds. As she set the basket down, something tiny darted behind a flowerpot. Lila froze and held her breath. What could it be? She tiptoed closer, her red sneakers quiet on the grass, and peeked behind the pot. 2
There sat a little mouse, no bigger than Lila's palm. It had soft pale-gray fur, pink rounded ears, and tiny black button eyes that blinked up at her. A tiny blue ribbon was tied around its tail. But the most surprising thing was its whiskers—long, glowing whiskers that sparkled in every color of the rainbow, from red to violet. Lila gasped. She had never seen anything like it. 3
'Hello,' whispered Lila, kneeling down. 'Your whiskers are so bright!' The mouse wiggled its pink nose and gave a tiny bow. 'I'm Pip,' it squeaked. 'My whiskers sparkle when I'm happy.' Lila smiled her cheerful wide smile. 'I'm Lila. I'm happy to meet you!' She held out her hand, and Pip climbed onto her palm, its rainbow whiskers leaving a faint sparkle in the air. 4
Pip tucked a miniature paintbrush behind one ear. 'I love to paint,' it said proudly. 'But I'm too small to paint big things.' Lila's hazel eyes grew wide. 'I have an idea!' she said. 'We can paint together!' She ran to get her paint-splattered apron and a box of paints. Pip's whiskers glowed brighter. 'Really? You don't mind that I'm different?' 'Different is wonderful!' said Lila. 5
Lila spread out a big sheet of paper on the grass. She dipped her brush in red paint and made a bold stroke. Pip dipped its tiny paintbrush in blue and added a swirl. They painted flowers, stars, and swooping lines. But the paper seemed too small for all their ideas. Pip's rainbow whiskers sparkled with excitement. 'We need a bigger canvas,' Lila said. 'Much bigger!' 6
Lila looked around the yard. She saw the long, plain wall at the back of the garden. 'That wall is perfect!' she cried. 'We can paint a mural there for everyone to see.' Pip did a happy little dance on its hind legs. 'A mural! With every color!' It squeaked with joy, and its whiskers flashed red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet all at once. 7
They gathered every color they could find: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Lila carried the big buckets, and Pip rode on her shoulder, holding its miniature paintbrush. The wall stretched wide and tall. Lila felt a little nervous. 'It's so big,' she said. Pip patted her cheek with a tiny paw. 'We can do it together,' it squeaked. 'One color at a time.' 8
Lila painted a big yellow sun, and Pip added rainbow rays that sparkled and glowed. Lila painted a brown tree, and Pip dotted it with colorful leaves. They painted a little gray mouse with rainbow whiskers and a girl with puffy buns holding hands. 'That's us!' Lila laughed. Her paint-splattered apron was covered in every color, and Pip's whiskers glowed brighter than ever. 9
As they painted, a neighbor stopped to watch. Then another, and another. Soon a small crowd of townspeople gathered. They had diverse skin tones and colorful clothes, and they smiled at the wall. 'What a lovely mural!' said a woman in a purple hat. 'Look at those rainbow whiskers!' said a boy. Lila waved her paintbrush. 'We're painting friendship!' she called. 10
One person in the crowd frowned. 'A mouse with rainbow whiskers? That's strange,' he said. Lila's smile faded. But Pip stepped forward and its whiskers sparkled extra bright. 'Being different is special,' Pip squeaked. 'It means you have something only you can give.' Lila nodded. 'Pip's colors made our mural beautiful,' she said. The frowning person thought for a moment, then smiled. 11
The townspeople picked up brushes too. They painted flowers and stars and handprints in every color. Lila and Pip painted side by side, their brushes dancing. The wall bloomed with colors—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, and every shade in between. Laughter filled the air. The mural grew more wonderful with each new stroke, and everyone felt like part of the picture. 12
When the last color was painted, everyone stepped back to look. The mural showed a girl and a mouse with rainbow whiskers, surrounded by smiling faces and a bright, shining sun. It was a celebration of friendship and of being different. The townspeople clapped and cheered. Pip's whiskers glowed so brightly that tiny sparkles floated up into the sky like happy fireflies. 13
From that day on, the mural was the pride of the town. People came from near and far to see it. Lila and Pip became the best of friends. They painted more pictures together, but the friendship mural was always their favorite. Lila learned that being different is not strange—it is a gift. And Pip's rainbow whiskers reminded everyone that colors are brighter when shared.
