Lila loves sunny afternoons in Grandma May's garden, dressed in her yellow polka-dot dress and red sneakers, with blue star clips in her curly dark hair. One day, behind the tallest sunflower, she discovers a plump, fluffy cat with cream fur and big amber eyes, wearing a red ribbon collar with a tiny silver bell. When Lila giggles, the cat's fur shimmers into bright rainbow stripes, and she learns that her feelings make the cat glow. She names it Rainbow, and the two become inseparable, chasing butterflies and rolling in the grass while the colors dance across the cat's back.
Then a cloud slides over the sun, and a heavy, nameless sadness settles in Lila's chest. The cat's rainbow dims to soft cream, and Grandma May gently suggests that Lila paint her feelings. With paper, brushes, and pots of bright paint, Lila gives shape to her sadness in blue and grey, then adds purple and yellow. As she paints and talks to Rainbow about a lost toy, a loud noise, and a friend who moved away, the cat's stripes begin to shimmer again. Lila paints a bold rainbow beside her sad cloud and discovers that both belong.
This gentle children's story follows one girl, her wise grandmother, and a magical cat through a single afternoon of big emotions. It shows young readers that feelings can be large and confusing, that they do not always need a reason, and that naming and expressing them through art can make them lighter. It is suited to children learning to understand their own emotions and to the adults who read alongside them.

The Girl and the Rainbow Cat - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK
Lila loved sunny afternoons in Grandma May's garden. She wore her yellow polka-dot dress and red sneakers, and blue star clips held back her curly dark hair. The flowers nodded in the breeze, and bees hummed happy tunes. "What a lovely day," Grandma said, her silver bun shining. Lila smiled her gap-toothed smile and skipped down the path, ready for adventure. 1
Behind the tallest sunflower, something moved. A plump, fluffy cat with cream fur and big amber eyes peeked out. It had a red ribbon collar with a tiny silver bell. "Hello," Lila whispered. The cat blinked, then purred so loudly its bell jingled. Lila reached out a small brown hand, and the cat rubbed against it, soft as a cloud. 2
Lila giggled, and suddenly the cat's cream fur shimmered. Bright rainbow stripes rippled across its back, glowing like a painting come to life. "You're magic!" Lila gasped. The cat twirled, its long tail swishing, and the colors danced. When Lila laughed again, the rainbow grew brighter. "Your feelings make you glow," Lila said, amazed. 3
The cat followed Lila everywhere, a warm ball of fluff at her heels. They chased butterflies and rolled in the grass, and with every happy moment the cat's rainbow stripes sparkled. "I'll call you Rainbow," Lila said. The cat purred, and its bell tinkled like tiny laughter. Grandma May watched from the porch, her round glasses glinting, and smiled. 4
Then, without warning, a cloud slid over the sun. Lila's smile faded. A heavy feeling settled in her chest, like a stone she couldn't name. The cat's rainbow colors dimmed to soft cream. Lila sat on the grass and hugged her knees. "I don't know why I'm sad," she whispered. The cat pressed close, warm and quiet, and didn't ask for words. 5
Grandma May came over, her lavender cardigan wrapped tight. She knelt beside Lila and gently touched her curly hair. "Feelings can be big and fuzzy," she said. "You don't always need to know why. Would you like to paint them?" Lila nodded slowly. Grandma brought out paper, brushes, and little pots of bright paint. The cat's amber eyes watched, patient and kind. 6
Lila dipped a brush in blue, then swirls of grey. She painted a wobbly shape, like a cloud with tears. "That's my sad," she said softly. The cat sat beside her, its tail curled around her sneakers. "Every feeling is welcome," Grandma said. "Paint it all." Lila added a splash of purple, then a streak of yellow, and her brush danced across the page. 7
As she painted, Lila's heart felt a little lighter. She told the cat about a lost toy, a loud noise, and a friend who moved away. The cat listened, whiskers twitching, and its fur began to shimmer again. Faint rainbow stripes glowed along its back. "You're helping," Lila whispered. The cat bumped its pink nose against her cheek, and she almost laughed. 8
Lila painted faster now, mixing red and orange and green. She made a rainbow that arched across the paper, bright and bold. "This is my happy," she said. The cat's stripes glowed brighter with each stroke, until every color of the rainbow danced on its fluffy fur. Grandma May brought lemonade, and the sun peeked out from behind the cloud, warming the garden again. 9
Lila looked at her painting—the sad cloud and the bright rainbow side by side. "They both belong," she said. The cat purred, its bell jingling softly. Grandma May smiled and said, "All feelings are okay. They just want to be understood." Lila hugged the cat close, feeling its warmth. The heavy stone in her chest had melted into something light and free. 10
The cat glowed so brightly now that Lila laughed out loud. "You're a rainbow cat!" she cried. The cat twirled and pranced, its stripes flickering like a happy song. Lila picked up her brush again and painted the cat itself, a fluffy swirl of color. "I feel better," she said. "Sad can visit, but happy comes back." The cat's bell rang like tiny chimes. 11
Grandma May hung Lila's painting on the garden fence for everyone to see. "Art helps us share big feelings," she said. Lila nodded, her hazel eyes shining. She knew now that feelings come and go, like clouds and sunshine. The rainbow cat sat beside her, its fur glowing softly. Lila gave it a gentle squeeze. "Thank you for staying," she whispered. The cat purred, and its bell tinkled. 12
Lila and the cat played until the sky turned pink and gold. They chased fireflies and rolled in the soft grass. Every time Lila laughed, the cat's rainbow stripes sparkled even brighter. "You glow when I'm happy," Lila said. "And when I'm sad, you stay close." The cat blinked its big amber eyes and purred. Grandma May watched from the porch, her heart full. 13
When the stars began to twinkle, Lila hugged the cat goodbye. "Will you come back tomorrow?" she asked. The cat rubbed against her dress and gave a little nod. Lila skipped to Grandma May, her red sneakers tapping the path. "I learned something," she said. "Feelings are like colors. They all mix together to make something beautiful." Grandma smiled and kissed her cheek. 14
The next morning, Lila found a tiny rainbow painted on her windowsill. She looked outside, and there sat the cat, its fur bright and welcoming. Lila ran out in her yellow polka-dot dress, curls bouncing. "You came back!" she cheered. The cat purred and led her to the garden, where new paper and paints waited.
