The Girl and the Ocean Pony

🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:41

Every summer morning, Lila races down the sandy path to the sea in her yellow polka-dot swimsuit, her curly black hair tied in two puffy buns. The ocean is her favorite place in the world, and she loves floating on her back, counting silver fish, and feeling the water wrap around her like a friendly hug. One bright morning, she dives deeper than usual and discovers something impossible: a pony standing on the sandy bottom, its seafoam-green coat shimmering and its turquoise mane drifting like seaweed.

The pony introduces itself as Pebble, who lives in the ocean and wears a braided strand of pink coral around its neck. The two become friends at once, and Pebble leads Lila through the blue water to a hidden underwater meadow where soft seagrass waves, bright flowers bloom, and seahorses sway between the blades. Together they play hide-and-seek among the coral, race across the meadow, and laugh until bubbles rise like tiny balloons. When their day together nears its end, Pebble and Lila talk about the difference between land and sea and realize that friendship does not depend on living in the same place.

This gentle story follows a curious child and a kind sea pony as they learn that kindness, play, and promises matter more than distance. Young readers who love the ocean, imaginary creatures, and stories about making friends will find a warm, simple tale about belonging and about keeping a friendship alive across two different worlds.

The Girl and the Ocean Pony - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Every summer morning, Lila ran down the sandy path to the sea. She wore her yellow swimsuit with white polka dots and pushed her blue goggles up on her head. Her curly black hair bounced in two puffy buns as she raced toward the waves. The ocean sparkled like a million tiny diamonds, and Lila could not wait to dive in. 1

Lila loved the ocean more than anything. She would float on her back and watch the clouds drift by. She would dive down and count the silver fish darting between the rocks. Her shell bracelet clicked softly against her wrist whenever she moved. The sea felt like a big, friendly hug, and Lila wished she could stay in it forever. 2

One bright morning, Lila dove deep and saw something strange below. A pony stood on the sandy bottom, its seafoamgreen coat shimmering like moonlight on water. Its turquoise mane floated around its face like soft seaweed. Lila's eyes went wide. A pony under the sea? She had never seen anything like it. 3

The pony turned and saw Lila. Its large violet eyes were friendly and kind. Around its neck hung a braided strand of pink coral. Tiny silver stars sparkled on its flank, and small fins fluttered along its legs. "Hello," said the pony softly. "My name is Pebble. I live here in the ocean. Who are you?" 4

"I'm Lila!" she said, bubbles rising from her smile. "I come from the land. But I love the sea." Pebble swished its turquoise tail and gave a happy little neigh. "Then we are friends already," said Pebble. "Would you like to see my favorite place? It is a meadow, but it is under the water." Lila nodded so fast her goggles almost slipped off. 5

Pebble led the way through the blue water. Lila kicked her legs and followed close behind. They swam past tall rocks covered in orange and purple sponges. A school of yellow fish swirled around them like confetti. "Almost there," Pebble called, its mane streaming behind like a ribbon. Lila felt excitement fizzing in her chest like soda bubbles. 6

Then the ocean opened up into a wide, bright meadow. Lila gasped. Soft green seagrass waved like a carpet in the current. Bright pink and blue flowers bloomed between the blades. Tiny orange fish nibbled at the petals, and a slow turtle munched on a leafy plant. "Welcome to my meadow," said Pebble proudly. "Isn't it beautiful?" 7

Lila spun around in the meadow, her arms stretched out like wings. "It's the most beautiful place I've ever seen!" She floated over the seagrass and watched a family of seahorses sway back and forth. Pebble trotted beside her, its hoofsteps making little puffs of sand. "I knew you would love it," said Pebble with a happy flick of its tail. 8

They played hide-and-seek among the tall plants. Pebble hid behind a big purple coral, but its seafoam-green tail stuck out. Lila giggled and tapped it. "Found you!" she cried. Then Lila hid behind a rock, but her yellow swimsuit was easy to spot. Pebble found her right away. They laughed so hard that bubbles floated up like tiny balloons. 9

Next, they raced across the meadow. Pebble galloped through the water, its small fins fluttering. Lila swam as fast as she could, her curly hair streaming behind her. "You're quick!" said Pebble. "But I know a shortcut!" Pebble led her through a tunnel of pink coral, and they burst out the other side, both laughing. The fish scattered and then came back to watch. 10

After the race, they rested in a soft patch of seagrass. Pebble looked at Lila with gentle violet eyes. "I wish you could stay here always," said Pebble. "But you belong on land, and I belong in the sea." Lila touched her shell bracelet and thought for a moment. "Maybe we can't live in the same place," she said. "But we can still be friends." 11

Pebble nodded. "You're right. Friendship doesn't care about land or sea. It just cares about kindness and fun." Lila hugged Pebble around its soft neck. "I'll come back every day," she promised. "And I'll bring you a new shell from the beach." Pebble nuzzled her cheek. "And I'll show you new parts of the meadow," said Pebble. "There's so much more to see." 12

Lila looked up and saw the sun glowing through the water. "I have to go home now," she said. "But I'll be back tomorrow." Pebble nodded and gave her a small pink flower from the meadow. "Keep this," said Pebble. "It will remind you of our meadow." Lila tucked the flower into her bracelet and waved goodbye. Then she swam up toward the light. 13

When Lila's head popped above the water, she took a big breath of fresh air. Her mother was waiting on the beach. "You were down there a long time," said her mother. "Did you see something wonderful?" Lila smiled her gap-toothed smile. "I made a new friend," she said. "And we played in an underwater meadow." Her mother smiled back and wrapped her in a warm towel. 14

The next morning, Lila ran down to the sea again. She carried a tiny pink shell in her hand. She dove down and found Pebble waiting in the meadow. "You came back!" said Pebble happily. "Of course I did," said Lila. "Friends always come back." She gave Pebble the shell, and Pebble gave her a strand of soft green seagrass. They played until the sun began to set.
