The Girl and the Little Whale

The Girl and the Little Whale

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Lila loves the ocean more than anything, and every morning she runs to the shore in her yellow raincoat and red boots to listen to the waves. One day the water sounds different, and out beyond the breakers she finds a small whale named Pip, no bigger than a rowboat, with deep-blue skin and tiny star-shaped spots glowing along his back. Pip has lost the trail of his family's song, and the ocean is far too big to search alone.

Lila takes Pip to Grandma Coral, an old and wise sea turtle who explains that the ocean sings many clues to those who know how to listen. She tells Lila that her gift is listening with her heart, and sends the two of them east to follow the music. Along the way they are joined by Splash, a cheerful dolphin who scouts ahead, and together they track glowing bubbles, a humming golden seaweed forest, a warm coral reef full of color, and a low song rising from an old shipwreck. Each clue points them further along the current toward a wide blue home.

The story follows Lila, Pip and Splash as they learn to pay attention to the world around them and to trust the help of friends. It is a gentle tale for young readers about listening carefully, asking for guidance from those who know more, and the loyalty that makes a long journey possible. The book suits children who enjoy ocean settings, animal companions and quiet adventures built on curiosity rather than danger.

The Girl and the Little Whale - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Lila loved the ocean more than anything. Every morning she put on her bright yellow raincoat, pulled on her red rubber boots, and ran to the shore. Her shell necklace bounced as she splashed in the shallows. The waves whispered secrets, and Lila always listened. Today, the ocean sounded different, like it was trying to tell her something important. 1

Out beyond the breakers, something sparkled. Lila waded in and saw a small whale, no bigger than a rowboat, with deepblue skin and tiny star-shaped spots glowing along his back. He wore a thin seaweed band around one fin, woven with tiny pearl shells. He looked up with large, soft dark eyes and let out a sad, lonely hum. 2

"Hello," Lila said softly. "I'm Lila. Are you lost?" The little whale nodded his big head. "I'm Pip," he hummed. "I was following my family's song, but the ocean is so big, and now I can't find them." Lila knew just who could help. "Come with me," she said. "Grandma Coral knows every song in the sea." 3

Grandma Coral was an old, wise sea turtle, as big as a kitchen table. Her mossy green-and-brown shell had coral-like ridges, and her kind amber eyes crinkled when she smiled. She wore a necklace of smooth sea glass beads in blue and green. "Ah," she said, "you've lost the trail of your family's song. But the ocean sings many clues if you know how to listen." 4

Grandma Coral turned to Lila. "You have a gift," she said. "You listen with your heart. The songs hide clues in every ripple. Follow the music, and you will find Pip's family." She pointed a wrinkled flipper toward the east. "Start there, where the water glows. Listen for the first clue." Lila nodded bravely. "We'll follow the songs," she promised. 5

Lila and Pip set off across the waves. Pip hummed a soft, wobbly tune, and Lila listened closely. Suddenly, the water around them began to sparkle with tiny lights. "Look!" Lila cried. "The water is singing!" A trail of glowing bubbles rose to the surface, each one popping with a tiny note. "This way!" Lila laughed, and they followed the bubble song. 6

Soon they met a cheerful dolphin named Splash. He had sleek silver-grey skin, a white belly, and bright blue eyes. A loop of orange fishing rope circled his tail like a bracelet. "Did someone say singing?" Splash chirped. "I love songs! I can scout ahead and find the next clue." He leaped high and splashed back down. "Follow me!" 7

Splash led them to a forest of golden seaweed. The fronds swayed and hummed a gentle melody. "The song says, 'Where the water is warm and the colors dance,'" Splash reported. Lila closed her eyes and listened. "That sounds like the coral reef!" she said. Pip's eyes lit up. "My family loves warm water!" They swam toward the colorful reef. 8

At the coral reef, fish of every color darted between pink and orange corals. The water was warm and full of music. Pip hummed along, and for a moment, he looked happy. "I remember this song!" he said. "My mother sang it when I was small." Lila smiled. "Then we're getting closer. Let's keep listening." 9

The reef's song faded into a deep, rumbling hum. Lila tilted her head. "That sounds like a big voice," she said. Splash leaped up. "It's coming from the old shipwreck!" They swam to a gentle wreck covered in soft sponges. Inside, a school of silver fish sang a low, booming note. "The song says, 'Follow the current to the wide blue home,'" they sang. 10

Lila wasn't sure which way the current went. "Let's ask Grandma Coral," she suggested. But when they returned, Grandma Coral was gone. In her place was a trail of sea glass beads, each one glowing faintly. "She left us a path!" Lila said. They followed the beads, and Splash scouted ahead. "I see a big current!" he called. "It's pulling east!" 11

The current was strong, but Lila held on to Pip's fin. Splash swam beside them, his orange rope bracelet flashing. "We're almost there!" he shouted. Then, through the blue, Lila heard a new song. It was deep and warm, like a giant hug. Pip's starshaped spots glowed brighter. "That's my family's song!" he cried. "They're calling me!" 12

They followed the song until they saw a pod of whales, their deep-blue backs rising and falling with the waves. Pip swam forward, and a big whale nuzzled him gently. "My little one!" she sang. Pip turned to Lila and Splash. "Thank you for helping me find my home," he hummed. "I could never have done it without you." 13

Lila hugged Pip's smooth cheek. "Friends help friends find their way," she said. Grandma Coral appeared beside them, her sea-glass necklace glinting. "You listened well, Lila," she said. "The ocean's songs are always there for those who open their hearts." Splash did a happy flip. "That was the best adventure ever!" he chirped. 14

Pip's family sang a beautiful song of thanks, and the ocean filled with glowing stars. "Will you come back?" Pip asked. Lila nodded. "Every summer," she promised. "And I'll listen for your song." Pip gave her a tiny pearl from his seaweed band. "So you never forget," he hummed. Lila held it close to her shell necklace.
