The Girl and the Golden Whale

The Girl and the Golden Whale

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Lila lives by the sparkling sea in a little blue house with a crooked chimney. Every morning she runs to the water's edge, wearing her orange goggles and shell necklace, and wishes the sea would sing a special song just for her. One bright morning, she spots a golden glimmer far out on the water and wades in to investigate. There she meets a young humpback whale whose deep blue-grey skin shimmers with golden patterns along his fins and back. The whale is shy and not very brave, but his song creates tiny glowing notes that float from his blowhole like fireflies. Lila climbs onto his flipper, and they glide into the deep, where they encounter Pip, a tiny seahorse with an acorn-cap hat, who guides them through the reef. Pip tells them of a silent valley where the ocean makes no sound at all, and the whale admits he once found it but was too scared to sing alone. Lila encourages him, and together they set out to bring music back to the silent valley. Along the way, they meet Granny Coral, an old sea turtle who explains that music is a bridge that connects friends. This heartwarming children's fairy tale teaches young readers about courage, friendship, and the power of music to bring joy and light to even the quietest places. It is perfect for early readers who enjoy stories about ocean adventures and unlikely friendships.

The Girl and the Golden Whale - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Lila lived by the sparkling sea, in a little blue house with a crooked chimney. Every morning she ran to the water's edge with her orange goggles on her forehead and her bare feet sinking into the warm sand. She loved to listen to the waves, but sometimes she wished the sea would sing a special song just for her. One bright morning, something glimmered far out on the water, like a golden star had fallen into the waves. 1

Lila grabbed her shell necklace and waded in. The glimmer grew brighter and brighter until a young humpback whale rose up beside her. His deep blue-grey skin shimmered with golden patterns along his fins and back, and his large soft dark eyes blinked gently. "Hello," he sang, and tiny glowing notes floated from his blowhole like fireflies. Lila gasped. "Your song makes golden light!" 2

The whale dipped his head shyly. "I am not very brave," he sang, the golden light flickering softly. "My name is Lila," she said, climbing onto his long graceful flipper. "Will you show me where the light comes from?" The whale nodded, and a thin woven kelp band on his flipper glowed as they glided into the deep. Lila held on tight, her heart beating fast with wonder. 3

Down, down they swam, past coral castles and swaying seaweed. Suddenly a tiny seahorse darted out, coral-pink with amber stripes, his big turquoise eyes wide. He wore a little acorn-cap hat tied with blue string. "Wait! I heard your song! I'm Pip!" he squeaked, curling his tail around Lila's finger. "I can guide you through the reef!" Lila laughed, and the whale's golden light warmed them all. 4

Pip led them through a maze of rocks, his tiny translucent fins fluttering. "There's a place," he whispered, "where the ocean is silent. No songs at all. It made me sad." The whale's golden patterns dimmed. "I found it once," he sang softly. "I was too scared to sing alone." Lila patted his fin. "You're not alone now," she said. "Let's go together." 5

They swam until the water turned still and grey. Below them lay a deep valley, its rocks bare and quiet. No fish darted, no bubbles rose. It felt like the ocean was holding its breath. The whale hovered at the edge. "This is it," he sang, and his golden light flickered weakly. Lila looked at the silent valley and felt a little tug in her heart. "We can help," she said. 6

Just then, a slow, gentle voice rumbled from a shadow. Granny Coral, an old sea turtle as big as a rowboat, glided toward them. Her moss-green shell had golden rings, and a purple scarf floated around her neck. "I remember when this valley sang," she said, her amber eyes kind. "The music made everything bloom. But the singers left, and the silence grew." 7

Granny Coral touched Lila's shell necklace with her barnacled flipper. "Music is a bridge," she said. "It connects friends, even across deep water." The whale lowered his head. "I want to sing," he whispered, "but my song feels too small." Lila hugged his fin. "Small songs can grow," she said. "I'll sing with you. We'll make the valley listen." 8

Lila took a deep breath and sang a simple tune, the kind she sang at home. The whale watched her, then joined in with a low, rumbling hum. At first, only a tiny golden spark appeared. But as their voices mixed, the spark grew into a glowing ribbon of light. It twisted and swirled, lighting up the grey rocks like sunrise. 9

The golden light spread across the valley, and the rocks began to shimmer. Pip zipped around them, his pink stripes glowing. "It's working!" he cheered. The whale sang louder, his golden patterns blazing along his back. Lila sang too, her voice dancing with his. The silent valley filled with light, and the water felt warm and alive. 10

From far away came the flutter of fins and the swish of tails. First a school of silver fish, then a pair of dancing seahorses, then a curious octopus with twinkling eyes. "We heard the golden song!" they cried. Pip waved his acorn-cap hat. "Come join the music!" he called. More and more creatures arrived, each adding their own sound to the growing song. 11

Granny Coral smiled and hummed a deep, steady note. The valley glowed brighter than ever, a golden ocean of music and light. Lila laughed as a little fish tickled her toes. "You see?" said Granny Coral. "When everyone sings, no one is alone." The whale nuzzled Lila gently, his shyness melting away. "Thank you for singing with me," he sang. 12

The friends sang and sang, and the golden light rippled out into the wide ocean. Lila felt the music travel through her, connecting her to the whale, to Pip, to Granny Coral, and to every creature in the valley. "Music makes friends," she whispered. The whale sang a happy note, and the light danced across the water like a thousand tiny stars. 13

The valley was full of happy friends and music. Pip gathered shiny pebbles and gave one to each new friend. Granny Coral told stories of the old songs while the whale and Lila sang duets that made the water glow. The whale wore his kelp band proudly, and his golden patterns never dimmed. Lila knew she would never forget this magical place.
