The Girl and the Golden Rabbit

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a cozy village at the edge of the woods lives a curious girl named Lily, who wears a mustard-yellow raincoat and red rubber boots and carries a woven straw basket. One sunny day, while gathering seeds, she meets a small rabbit with soft cream-white fur and long ears that shimmer like gold. The rabbit wears a thin braided vine collar with a single blue flower. When other village children laugh at the rabbit's glowing ears, Lily stands up for him, saying that being different is special. The rabbit, encouraged by her kindness, leads Lily deeper into the woods to a magical meadow that has turned gray and lifeless because no one cares for it anymore.

Lily and the golden rabbit work together to plant seeds from her garden, and they are soon joined by a squirrel, a bluebird, and a shy hedgehog. As they plant, the meadow begins to transform, with tiny green shoots appearing and the rabbit's ears glowing brighter. By the next morning, the meadow is alive again with bright flowers, lush grass, and a bubbling stream. The village children, hearing of the beauty, come to see and ask how it happened.

This heartwarming tale teaches children about kindness, acceptance of differences, and the importance of caring for nature and working together. It is perfect for young readers who enjoy stories about friendship, magic, and the rewards of helping others.

The Girl and the Golden Rabbit - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a cozy village at the edge of the woods lived a curious girl named Lily. She had warm light-brown skin and wavy chestnutbrown hair tied in a loose side braid. Her large hazel-green eyes sparkled with wonder. Every morning, she put on her mustard-yellow raincoat with wooden buttons and her red rubber boots. She grabbed her woven straw basket, ready for a new adventure. 1

One sunny day, Lily skipped into the woods to gather seeds for her garden. The trees whispered and the flowers nodded as she passed. Suddenly, she heard a soft rustle in the bushes. Out peeked a small rabbit with soft cream-white fur and long ears that shimmered like gold. Its bright amber eyes blinked shyly at her. Lily gasped with delight. 2

'Hello, little one,' Lily said gently, kneeling down. The golden rabbit twitched its tiny pink nose and hopped a little closer. It wore a thin braided vine collar with one small blue flower. Lily held out her hand, and the rabbit sniffed it. 'Don't worry,' she whispered. 'I won't hurt you.' The rabbit's golden ears glowed faintly in the sunlight. 3

Just then, a group of children from the village ran by. 'Look at that weird rabbit!' one laughed. 'Its ears are glowing like a lantern!' Another pointed and giggled. The golden rabbit cowered and hid behind Lily's red boots. Lily stood tall and said, 'Don't laugh at him. Being different is special.' The children shrugged and ran off, but the rabbit still trembled. 4

Lily picked up the golden rabbit and held him close. 'It's okay,' she said softly. 'I think your golden ears are beautiful.' The rabbit's amber eyes brightened, and he nuzzled her cheek. Slowly, he hopped down and looked up at her, as if asking her to follow. He darted a few steps forward, then waited. Lily smiled and followed him deeper into the woods. 5

The golden rabbit led Lily through tall ferns and under low branches. They crossed a bubbling brook and climbed a mossy hill. Lily's woven basket bumped against her side as she hurried to keep up. Finally, the rabbit stopped at a gap in the hedges. Beyond it, Lily saw a meadow that looked sad and gray. The flowers drooped, and the grass was pale and dry. 6

'Oh no,' Lily whispered. 'What happened here?' The golden rabbit's ears drooped. He hopped to a withered flower and nudged it gently. Lily noticed that the meadow had lost all its colors. The trees were bare, and the little stream was almost dry. 'This is a magical meadow,' the rabbit said in a tiny voice. 'But it's fading because no one cares for it anymore.' 7

Lily felt a tug at her heart. 'We can fix this together,' she said. She opened her woven basket and pulled out a handful of seeds. 'I brought these from my garden. Let's plant them and bring the colors back.' The golden rabbit's eyes sparkled. He showed her where to dig and where to water. They worked side by side, planting seeds in the soft earth. 8

As they planted, a squirrel with a bushy tail scampered over. 'Can I help?' it chattered. Lily nodded and gave it a tiny seed. Soon, a bluebird flew down and offered to carry water in its beak. Even a shy hedgehog joined in, rolling seeds into little holes. The golden rabbit hopped around, encouraging everyone with a cheerful wiggle of his golden ears. 9

They planted seeds all day long. Lily's mustard-yellow raincoat got muddy, and her red boots were covered in dirt, but she didn't mind. The golden rabbit dug beside her, his cream-white fur speckled with soil. 'You're a good friend,' he said. 'No one ever stayed to help before.' Lily smiled. 'Friends help each other,' she replied. 'And I'm glad I found you.' 10

By evening, the last seed was planted. The animals gathered around, tired but happy. Lily looked at the meadow and wished with all her heart for it to bloom. Suddenly, a tiny green shoot poked through the soil. Then another, and another. The golden rabbit's ears glowed brighter than ever, and a warm light spread across the meadow like a gentle hug. 11

The next morning, Lily and the golden rabbit returned to the meadow. It was transformed! Bright flowers nodded in the breeze, and the grass was lush and green. The stream bubbled with clear water. The animals danced with joy. 'You did it!' the rabbit cheered, hopping in circles. Lily laughed and twirled, her chestnut braid flying. The magical meadow was alive again. 12

The village children heard about the beautiful meadow and came to see. They gasped at the colors and the happy animals. 'How did this happen?' they asked. Lily pointed to the golden rabbit. 'He showed me that kindness matters more than appearance,' she said. 'And we all worked together.' The children looked at the rabbit's golden ears with new eyes and smiled. 13

From that day on, the children often visited the meadow. They brought seeds and helped care for the flowers. The golden rabbit was no longer teased; he was loved by everyone. Lily and the rabbit became the best of friends, exploring the woods and tending the meadow. The rabbit's vine collar with the blue flower seemed to bloom brighter each day.
