Lila is a curious girl who wears her yellow rain boots and blue overalls every day, always ready for adventure with a notebook and pencil in her canvas satchel. One morning, by the sparkling river, she discovers a crystal otter whose fur shimmers like pale blue glass and whose silver whiskers catch the light. The otter, whom Lila names Sparkle, leads her through ferns and under a fallen log to a hidden river sanctuary full of clear water, colorful fish, stained-glass dragonflies and flowers of every color. The two become best friends, spending afternoons racing sticks, skipping stones and drawing pictures together.
Their happy routine is interrupted when Lila notices a plastic bag floating in the water and Sparkle becomes tangled in it. Following the river upstream, they find cans, wrappers and a broken bottle, and Lila realizes the sanctuary is getting dirty. She turns to Grandpa Finn, a tall bearded fisherman who tells her that the river needs protectors. Together they clean the banks, and Lila draws a sign asking everyone to keep the river clean. She then invites her friends to see the sanctuary and to join her in caring for it.
The story shows young readers that beautiful places are worth protecting and that even a child can make a difference by noticing a problem and asking for help. It suits early readers and families who enjoy gentle tales about friendship, nature and small acts of responsibility.

A Chapter from the Book
The Girl and the Crystal Otter - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK
Lila loved to explore. She wore her yellow rain boots and blue overalls every day, ready for adventure. Her curly black hair bounced in two puffy buns as she skipped along the path by the river. In her canvas satchel, she carried a notebook and a pencil. She liked to draw everything she saw. The river sparkled in the sun, and Lila smiled. Something wonderful was waiting for her today. 1
As Lila walked, she heard a soft splash. She peeked behind a big rock. There, in the shallow water, an otter played with a shiny pebble. But this otter was not like other otters. Its fur shimmered like pale blue crystal, and its silver whiskers sparkled. Its bright teal eyes looked up at Lila. The otter tilted its head, curious. Lila gasped. "You're beautiful!" she whispered. 2
The crystal otter chirped and paddled closer. Lila knelt down and held out her hand. The otter's tiny paw touched her finger, and a rainbow of light danced between them. Lila laughed. "I'm Lila," she said. The otter dove into the water and came up with a small, shiny stone. It placed the stone in Lila's palm. "Thank you!" Lila said. She named the otter Sparkle. 3
Sparkle swam in circles, then dashed downstream, looking back as if to say, "Follow me!" Lila ran along the bank, her yellow boots splashing in puddles. Sparkle led her past tall reeds and under a fallen log. Finally, they reached a hidden path. Lila pushed aside some ferns and gasped. A secret river sanctuary lay before her, glowing with light. "Wow!" she breathed. 4
The sanctuary was full of wonder. The water was clear as glass, and colorful fish darted beneath the surface. Dragonflies with wings like stained glass buzzed around. Flowers of every color bloomed along the bank. Sparkle swam happily, and Lila sat on a smooth stone, sketching everything. "This is the most beautiful place I've ever seen," she said. Sparkle chirped in agreement. 5
Lila and Sparkle played all afternoon. They raced sticks in the river and built tiny dams with pebbles. Sparkle showed Lila how to skip stones. Lila taught Sparkle to balance a flower on her nose. They shared Lila's sandwich, and Sparkle nibbled on a water plant. The sun began to set, painting the sky pink and orange. Lila knew she had to go home, but she promised to return. 6
Every day after school, Lila visited Sparkle. They explored every corner of the sanctuary. They found a little waterfall that sang like bells and a pool where the water was warm. Sparkle caught fish, and Lila drew pictures. They became best friends. Lila brought Sparkle a bracelet made of woven reeds. Sparkle wore it on her foreleg and chirped with joy. 7
One afternoon, Lila noticed something wrong. A plastic bag floated in the water. Sparkle tried to pull it out but got tangled. Lila waded in and freed her friend. "Where did this come from?" she wondered. They followed the river upstream and found more trash: cans, wrappers, and a broken bottle. The sanctuary was getting dirty. Sparkle looked sad. Lila felt worried. 8
Lila ran to find Grandpa Finn. He was tall with a white beard, wearing his green fisherman's hat and leaning on his wooden walking stick. "Grandpa, the river is full of trash!" Lila said. Grandpa Finn nodded. "People forget to take their trash home," he said. "But we can help. The river needs protectors like you." Lila's amber eyes lit up. "I want to protect it!" 9
Grandpa Finn gave Lila a big sack and some gloves. They walked to the sanctuary together. Sparkle waited by the water. "Let's clean this up," Grandpa Finn said. Lila picked up cans and wrappers. Grandpa Finn used his stick to pull out a soggy cardboard box. Sparkle dove and brought up a plastic cup. It was hard work, but they laughed and sang as they cleaned. 10
After cleaning, Lila had an idea. "We should tell everyone to keep the river clean!" she said. She drew a sign with a picture of Sparkle and the words "Please Keep Our River Clean!" Grandpa Finn helped her put it up. Sparkle chirped loudly. Lila said, "If everyone helps, the sanctuary will stay beautiful." Grandpa Finn smiled. "You're right, Lila. Beauty deserves protection." 11
The next day, Lila invited her friends to the sanctuary. They were amazed by Sparkle and the crystal-clear water. Lila told them about the trash and how they cleaned it. "We can all be protectors," she said. Her friends promised to help. They picked up litter and told others to do the same. Sparkle swam happily, showing off her rainbow light. The sanctuary began to sparkle again. 12
Lila and Sparkle sat by the river as the sun set. "We make a good team," Lila said. Sparkle nodded and placed a paw on Lila's hand. Lila thought about how much better everything was when friends worked together. The river flowed gently, and the sanctuary glowed. "I'll always protect this place," Lila promised. Sparkle chirped, and they watched the stars appear. 13
Grandpa Finn came to visit. He saw the clean water and the new sign. "You did a wonderful job, Lila," he said. "You too, Sparkle." He told them a story about the river when he was a boy. "The river gives us so much," he said. "We must take care of it." Lila nodded. She knew that protecting the river was important, and she was proud of what they had done.
