A Chapter from the Book
The Firefly's Missing Flash Ebru Mina TOMURCUK
In the warm summer meadow, where tall grass swayed and daisies nodded, lived a little firefly named Lumi. Her round body was amber-gold, and her big dark eyes sparkled with wonder. On her tail was a pale spot that was supposed to glow. But no matter how hard she tried, it stayed dim. 'Why won't my light shine?' she whispered to the evening sky. 1
Lumi's best friend was Moth, who wore a moss-green scarf and a tiny acorn-cap hat. Moth had soft, feathery antennae and gentle hazel eyes that always seemed to smile. 'Don't worry, Lumi,' Moth said, fluttering close. 'The festival is tonight, and we'll have fun together.' Lumi nodded, but her tiny red berry necklace felt heavy with worry. 2
Every year, the meadow bugs held a nighttime festival. They hung tiny lanterns made of flower petals and danced in the moonlight. Ladybugs in leaf capes and crickets with berrybead bracelets buzzed with excitement. 'The fireflies will light up the sky!' cried a grasshopper. Lumi's heart sank. Her tail was still as dark as a pebble. 3
When the sun set, the festival began. One by one, the fireflies lit up their tails. Their golden flashes danced like stars among the grass. Lumi tried and tried, but her spot stayed dim. She felt a hot tear roll down her rosy cheek. 'I can't do it,' she sniffled. 'I'm the only firefly who can't shine.' 4
Moth found Lumi hiding behind a mushroom. 'Come out,' Moth said softly. 'The festival is for everyone.' But Lumi shook her head. 'Everyone will see that I don't glow,' she whispered. 'They'll think I'm not a real firefly.' Moth wrapped a fuzzy wing around her. 'Your light is not the only thing that makes you special,' Moth said. 5
Just then, a little beetle scurried by. 'Oh no!' cried the beetle. 'The storyteller is sick, and we have no stories for the festival!' The crowd began to murmur. Lumi's big eyes widened. She loved stories more than anything. She had hundreds of them in her head, about brave ants and singing streams and moons made of honey. 6
Moth saw the spark in Lumi's eyes. 'You know stories,' Moth said gently. 'You could tell one.' Lumi's cheeks turned pink. 'But I'm too shy,' she said. 'What if they don't like me?' Moth smiled. 'I'll be right beside you. Just speak from your heart.' Lumi took a deep breath and nodded. 7
Moth led Lumi to a little hill of moss. The crowd gathered around, curious. Lumi's wings trembled, and her tail was still dim. She looked at Moth, who gave an encouraging nod. 'Once,' Lumi began, 'there was a little star who couldn't shine...' Her voice was soft, but the bugs leaned in to listen. 8
As Lumi spoke, her words painted pictures in the air. The bugs saw the star trying and trying, and they felt its sadness. They saw the star's friend, a wise old moon, who helped the star find another way to glow. The ladybugs sighed, and the crickets smiled. Lumi's voice grew stronger, and her eyes shone with joy. 9
When Lumi finished, the meadow was silent for a moment. Then the ladybugs clapped their tiny wings. The grasshoppers cheered, and the beetles stomped their feet. 'More!' they cried. 'Tell us another!' Lumi's heart swelled. She told a tale about a brave ant who saved a raindrop, and then one about a singing stream that learned to dance. 10
Moth stayed close, whispering encouragement. 'You see?' Moth said. 'Your stories make everyone happy.' Lumi looked at her friend, and a warm feeling spread through her. She realized that even without a flash, she could light up the night with her words. The festival crowd gathered around her, their faces bright with wonder. 11
As Lumi told her stories, something magical happened. Her tail began to glow, just a little at first, then brighter and brighter. It wasn't a flash like the other fireflies, but a soft, steady light that pulsed with her words. 'Look!' cried a ladybug. 'Her light is shining!' Lumi gasped and smiled. Her heart had been glowing all along. 12
The bugs cheered louder than ever. 'Lumi the storyteller!' they shouted. 'Lumi the glow-heart!' Moth hugged her tightly. 'I knew you could do it,' Moth said. 'Your kindness and your stories made your light shine.' Lumi's tiny red berry necklace seemed to sparkle in the glow. She felt warm and happy and proud. 13
From that night on, Lumi was never sad about her light again. She told stories at every festival, and her special glow always drew a happy crowd. Moth sat beside her, wearing the mossgreen scarf and smiling. Lumi learned that friendship is not about what you can do. It is about being kind and sharing what you love. 14
The meadow bugs still talk about the night the little firefly found her glow. They say that kindness and storytelling can light up a heart just as bright as any flash. Lumi and Moth remain the best of friends, and every festival ends with a story from Lumi, while her soft light shines like a tiny beacon of friendship. 15
And if you ever visit the meadow on a summer night, you might see a little firefly with a dim tail but a bright smile. She will be telling a story to a crowd of bugs, with a moth in a moss-green scarf beside her. And you will know that friendship and kindness make the brightest light of all.
