The Elephant's Secret Letter - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

On the wide, golden savanna, where acacia trees spread like umbrellas, lived a small elephant named Ellie. She had soft grey skin, big floppy ears with pink edges, and a tiny white flower tucked behind her left ear. Every morning, she helped her mama gather sweet grass and cool water. But today, Ellie found something special: a folded leaf-letter tucked under a smooth stone. 1

Ellie unfolded the leaf-letter carefully. It was from her grandmother, Nala, who had passed away last season. The letter said, 'My dear Ellie, follow the clues I left for you. Look where the baobab tree bends like an old friend.' Ellie's heart thumped with wonder. She packed the letter in her woven grass satchel, yellow and green like the morning sun. 2

Ellie set off across the savanna, her short tail swishing with excitement. The grass whispered around her legs, and birds sang from the branches. She passed a family of giraffes nibbling leaves and a herd of zebras drinking at a stream. 'Where are you going, little one?' asked a giraffe. 'To find my grandmother's secret!' Ellie called back, her brown eyes shining. 3

Soon, Ellie reached the great baobab tree. Its trunk was wide and wrinkled, just like grandmother's skin. She searched around the roots and found a small stone with a painted arrow. The arrow pointed toward the river. Ellie remembered grandmother saying, 'The river sings the oldest songs.' She hurried along the path, her floppy ears flapping. 4

At the riverbank, Ellie met a wise old tortoise named Tembo. 'Have you seen a clue?' she asked. Tembo smiled slowly. 'Your grandmother told me to watch for you. She said you would come with a flower behind your ear.' He pointed his wrinkled neck toward a line of flat rocks. 'Follow the stones that look like stepping stones,' he said. 5

Ellie crossed the river on the flat rocks, careful not to slip. On the other side, she found a patch of tall grass with a red cloth tied to a stalk. It was just like the red wrap grandmother wore around her tusk! Ellie's heart raced. She untied the cloth and found another clue: 'When the sun touches the hills, find the place where the ground hums.' 6

The sun was climbing high, so Ellie rested under a thorn tree. She thought about grandmother's gentle voice and her kind, knowing smile. She remembered how grandmother would tell stories under the stars, with little Tumbo giggling on her lap. The memories made Ellie feel warm inside, like a cozy blanket. She couldn't wait to find the secret place. 7

As she walked, Ellie met a chatty parrot named Kito. 'Kito, do you know where the ground hums?' she asked. Kito tilted his head. 'Follow the sound of the bees,' he squawked. 'They hum near the hidden hollow.' Ellie thanked him and followed the buzzing. The bees led her to a circle of stones, and the ground did seem to hum with their song. 8

In the center of the stones, Ellie found a small hole. Inside was a smooth, round pebble with a picture of an elephant's trunk. It was grandmother's favorite symbol! Ellie remembered grandmother saying, 'Our trunks are like extra hands, always ready to help.' She traced the picture with her trunk and felt close to grandmother. 9

The pebble had a tiny string attached. Ellie pulled it gently, and a hidden door in the ground swung open. It revealed a tunnel lined with soft moss. Ellie hesitated. It looked dark inside. But she thought of grandmother's courage and stepped in. The tunnel sloped downward, and she could hear faint sounds of laughter and trumpeting. 10

At the end of the tunnel, Ellie saw a bright light. She stepped out into a hidden hollow surrounded by tall grass and flowering bushes. There stood Mama Zuri, tall and strong, wearing her green and gold shawl. Beside her was little Tumbo, bouncing with excitement in his orange scarf. 'Welcome, Ellie!' they shouted. 'We've been waiting for you!' 11

Ellie ran to Mama and wrapped her trunk around her in a hug. 'You knew about the letter?' she asked. Mama nodded. 'Grandmother planned this treasure hunt for you. She wanted you to discover our special meeting place and learn about our family memories.' Tumbo tugged Ellie's tail. 'Did you find the clue with the red cloth? That was my favorite!' 12

Everyone sat in a circle on the soft grass. Mama Zuri started, 'Grandmother Nala loved this place. She said it was where the savanna hums with family love.' Then each elephant shared a happy memory. Uncle Kito remembered how grandmother sang silly songs. Aunt Lulu told about the time grandmother painted blue dots on her forehead for a festival. 13

Tumbo giggled and said, 'I remember when grandmother let me splash in the mud and she didn't even scold me!' Everyone laughed. Ellie shared, 'I remember how grandmother would tuck me in with her trunk and tell me stories about the stars.' The hollow filled with warm laughter and loving words, and the ground seemed to hum with joy. 14

Mama Zuri placed a gentle trunk on Ellie's shoulder. 'Grandmother left you this letter to teach you that family memories are precious treasures. They connect us, even when we are apart.' Ellie looked around at her family and felt a warm glow. She knew that grandmother's love would always be with them, woven into every story and every hug.
