In a sunny meadow at the edge of a dusty town, a young elephant named Eldred dreams of riding a bicycle like the children he watches every morning. But when he tries, his big rounded feet won't fit the pedals, and the bicycles wobble under his weight. Just as he begins to lose hope, a meerkat engineer named Pim appears, ready to solve tricky problems. Together, they measure, design, and build a bicycle specially made for an elephant. This heartwarming story follows Eldred's journey from frustration to triumph as he learns that with determination, teamwork, and a little engineering ingenuity, even the biggest dreams can come true.

The book teaches children the value of perseverance and creative problem-solving. Eldred's cheerful determination and Pim's can-do attitude show that obstacles can be overcome by thinking outside the box and working together. Young readers will be inspired by the message that no dream is too big if you're willing to try and ask for help when needed. The story also introduces basic engineering concepts like measuring, designing, and testing in a fun, accessible way.

With its charming characters and lively illustrations, The Elephant's Little Bicycle is perfect for children aged 4-8 who love animals, adventure, and stories about achieving the impossible. It's a delightful read-aloud that will spark conversations about persistence, collaboration, and the joy of riding a bike.

The Elephant's Little Bicycle - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a sunny meadow at the edge of a dusty town lived a young elephant named Eldred. He had soft blue-grey skin, wide floppy ears, and a little red scarf tied around his neck. Every morning he watched the children wobble past on their bicycles, ringing their bells. And every morning his small dark eyes grew wide with one big wish. "I want to ride a bicycle too," he said. 1

Eldred was cheerful and determined, and he never gave up on a dream. So one bright day he found a bicycle leaning against a fence and tried to climb on. But his big rounded feet would not fit the pedals, and his sturdy legs bumped the handlebars. The bicycle tipped and wobbled and squeaked. "Too small," sighed Eldred. "Much too small for me." 2

He tried another bicycle and then another. Each one wobbled and wibbled and waggled under his weight. His wide floppy ears drooped a little lower with every try. "My dream is too big for these little wheels," he said sadly. Just then a small voice piped up from the grass. "Excuse me! I am an engineer. I fix tricky problems." 3

It was a meerkat with sandy tan fur and a cream belly, wearing round brass goggles on her forehead. A yellow hard hat sat on her head, and a brown leather tool belt jingled at her waist. "My name is Pim," she said, tipping her hat. "I heard a squeak. Was that you or the bicycle?" Eldred laughed. "Both of us, I think!" 4

Pim walked all around the bicycle, tapping and peeking and humming. "The problem is clear," she said. "These bicycles are made for small riders. You need a different design, one built just for you." Eldred's ears lifted. "A bicycle built for an elephant? Is that even possible?" Pim pulled a tiny pencil from her belt. "Let's think, measure, and draw." 5

First Pim measured Eldred from his big feet to the tips of his ears. She measured his trunk, his tail, and his round belly too. "You are three times my height," she said, scribbling numbers on a leaf. "So the frame must be taller and much, much stronger." Eldred stood very still, trying hard not to wiggle, while she measured every bit of him. 6

Next they sat down together and drew a new design. Pim sketched a wide, sturdy frame with thick bars and big strong wheels. "Wider seat for your big feet and a wider seat for you," she said. "And extra-sturdy spokes, so nothing wobbles." Eldred pointed with his short curved trunk. "Could it have a big shiny bell?" "Absolutely," said Pim, drawing a bell. 7

They gathered strong metal tubes, fat rubber tires, and a very big chain. Pim climbed and clanked and tightened bolts with her tiny tools. Eldred helped by holding pieces steady with his trunk. "A little more to the left," said Pim. "Now a little more to the right." They worked all afternoon, and the pile of parts slowly became a bicycle. 8

When the sun began to sink, the bicycle stood tall in the meadow. It was bigger and stronger than any bicycle Eldred had ever seen. The frame gleamed, the wheels were wide and round, and a great shiny bell sat on the handlebars. Eldred walked around it three times, his floppy ears flapping with excitement. "It looks wonderful!" 9

Eldred put one big foot on the pedal. The bicycle held steady, not a single wobble. He put his other foot on and lifted his round belly onto the wide seat. Pim held the back wheel and counted. "Ready? One, two, three!" Eldred pushed, and the big wheels began to turn. "I'm doing it!" he trumpeted. 10

But the very first bump made the handlebars twist. Eldred wobbled and grabbed the brake. "Oh dear!" he said. "The front wheel wants to go left when I want to go right." Pim ran up, her goggles shining. "No problem," she said. "That is what engineers are for. Let's make it steadier." She studied the wobbly wheel. 11

Pim added a strong brace across the front and tightened every bolt until it hummed. "There," she said. "Now the wheel will listen to you." Eldred climbed on again, a little nervous, but Pim patted his big foot. "Small push first. Then a bigger push." He pushed gently, then a little more, and the bicycle rolled smooth as a river. 12

Eldred rode across the meadow with a happy rumble. The wind flapped his wide ears, and his little red scarf streamed behind him. "Ring ring!" went the shiny bell. "Wheee!" went Eldred. Pim rode on the back rack, laughing and holding her yellow hard hat. All the children in the town stopped and cheered. "Look at the elephant on the bicycle!" 13

Eldred rode past the bakery, past the fountain, and all the way around the meadow. His small dark eyes sparkled. "I dreamed it," he said, "and you designed it, and we built it together." Pim grinned. "A big dream needs a smart plan. And a smart plan needs a good team." They bumped trunks and paws, very gently and very happily. 14

That evening Eldred parked his bicycle beside the meadow and gave it one loving pat. "Thank you, Pim," he said. "You made my dream the right size." Pim packed her tiny tools away. "And you showed me that no dream is too big if we think and measure and try." The two friends sat together as the stars came out.
