In a cozy village at the edge of a whispering wood, seven-year-old Leo loves to explore with his green canvas backpack, hoping to find something magical. One sunny morning he hears a tiny sneeze behind a bush and discovers Ember, a little dragon no bigger than a cat, with mint-green scales, a pale-yellow belly, big amber eyes and a small red knitted scarf. Ember is frightened because sparks keep fizzing from his nostrils, and he admits that he is afraid of his own fire.
Instead of laughing, Leo offers to help. With a notebook, patience and a lot of encouragement, the two become a team. They practice slow, deep breathing, counting to four as Ember breathes in and out, and little by little the sparks grow smaller and fewer. Leo shows Ember that his fire is part of his magic and only needs to feel calm. When Leo brings a teapot and asks Ember to warm the tea, Ember dares to release just a gentle flame, and the success gives him the courage to try more.
The story follows the pair as they prepare for a friend's birthday party, where Ember hopes to light the candles without setting the cake on fire. Through practice and trust, Ember learns to control his flame, and the two friends discover that fears can be managed with patience, kindness and friendship. This gentle tale is suited to young children and to anyone reading aloud with them, offering a warm lesson about courage, self-acceptance and helping a friend believe in himself.

The Boy and the Tiny Dragon - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK
In a cozy village at the edge of a whispering wood, a boy named Leo often wandered with his green canvas backpack. His sky-blue t-shirt and mustard-yellow shorts made him easy to spot among the ferns. Leo was seven years old, with warm light-brown skin and a gap-toothed smile that made everyone feel welcome. He loved exploring and dreamed of finding something magical. 1
One sunny morning, Leo heard a tiny sneeze from behind a bush. Peeking through the leaves, he saw a little creature no bigger than a cat. It had soft mint-green scales, a pale-yellow belly, and big round amber eyes. A small red knitted scarf was wrapped around its neck. Tiny sparks fizzed from its nostrils, and the creature looked frightened. 2
"Hello," Leo said softly. "I'm Leo. What's your name?" The tiny dragon tried to speak, but a spark popped out and he hid his face. "It's okay," Leo whispered. "I won't laugh." Slowly, the dragon peeked out. "I'm Ember," he squeaked. "I'm afraid of my own fire. It just happens, and I can't stop it." 3
Leo sat down on the moss and smiled his gap-toothed smile. "Everyone is afraid sometimes," he said. "Maybe we can figure it out together." Ember's amber eyes widened. No one had ever offered to help before. He nodded shyly, and his tiny wings fluttered with hope. Leo opened his backpack and pulled out a small notebook and a pencil. "Let's be a team," he said. 4
First, Leo taught Ember to take slow, deep breaths. "In through your nose, out through your mouth," he said. Ember tried, but a spark sizzled from his snout. "Oops!" he cried. Leo shook his head gently. "That's okay. Try again." They practiced counting to four as Ember breathed in, and to four as he breathed out. The sparks grew smaller and fewer. 5
Days passed, and Leo visited Ember every afternoon. They practiced breathing while watching clouds drift by. Sometimes Ember's sparks would startle a butterfly, and he would hide under a leaf. But Leo always waited patiently. "You're getting better," Leo said. "Your fire is part of your magic. We just need to help it feel calm." Ember began to believe him. 6
One chilly morning, Leo brought a small teapot and two cups. "Let's try warming the tea," he suggested. Ember's eyes grew wide. "But what if I burn it?" he whispered. "We'll start with just a little warmth," Leo said. "Breathe slowly, and let just a tiny bit of fire out." Ember focused, took a deep breath, and a gentle flame flickered from his mouth. 7
The flame was soft and warm, like a tiny sunbeam. It tickled the bottom of the teapot, and soon steam curled into the air. "You did it!" Leo cheered. Ember's tail curled with delight. They shared the warm tea, and Ember's scarf felt extra cozy. "I made the tea warm!" Ember said proudly. "And you didn't burn anything," Leo added with a grin. 8
Next, Leo had an idea. "My friend's birthday is tomorrow. Could you help light the candles?" Ember gulped. "What if I set the cake on fire?" he worried. "We'll practice first," Leo said. They found some old twigs and practiced lighting them with a calm, steady breath. Ember's sparks became small and controlled. "You're ready," Leo said, and Ember felt a flutter of courage. 9
At the birthday party, Ember hid behind Leo's legs. The cake sat on the table with unlit candles. Leo gave Ember a gentle nod. Ember took a deep breath, just like they practiced. He blew a tiny, perfect flame onto each wick. The candles glowed brightly, and everyone clapped. Ember's amber eyes shone with joy. He had done it! 10
From that day on, Ember wasn't afraid of his fire anymore. He learned to use it for good: warming tea, lighting candles, and even toasting marshmallows. Leo and Ember became best friends, exploring the whispering wood together. Leo discovered that fears can be managed with patience and friendship. And Ember learned that being gentle and never giving up helps us grow brave. 11
One evening, as the sun set, Leo and Ember sat on a hill. "I used to think my fire was a monster," Ember said. "But it's just a part of me." Leo smiled. "And you're not alone with it," he said. "We're a team." They watched the stars appear, and Ember's tiny sparks danced like fireflies in the dark. 12
The village children soon heard about the tiny dragon who could warm tea and light candles. They came to meet Ember, and he greeted them with a shy smile. Leo stood by his side. "He's the bravest dragon I know," Leo said. Ember's tail curled with pride. He had learned that courage grows when you share it with a friend. 13
In the whispering wood, Leo and Ember built a little campfire circle. They invited other animals to join them. Ember practiced his magic, lighting small twigs safely. The animals cheered. Ember felt happy and calm. Leo's gap-toothed smile was wider than ever. "See?" he said. "You can do anything with a little patience." 14
As seasons changed, Ember grew braver and his magic grew stronger. But he never forgot the boy who believed in him. Leo learned that being gentle and never giving up helps us grow brave. And Ember learned that fears can be managed with patience and friendship. Together, they were unstoppable.
