Leo is a curious boy with warm light-brown skin and hazel eyes that notice everything, and he loves to wander past the last street of his town. One sunny morning a narrow path he has never seen before leads him to a hidden lake garden, where silver water lies still among lily pads, willow branches hang like curtains, and tiny glowing flowers sparkle in the mist. There he spots a small turtle with a smooth silver shell that shimmers with soft rainbow colors, watching him with shy amber eyes.
Remembering his grandmother's advice to give shy friends time, Leo does not reach out or grab. He sits on a mossy stone and waits, then returns day after day with lettuce leaves and a low, friendly voice. Slowly the turtle grows braver, until it taps his shoe and leads him across the lake on floating lily pads to heart-shaped stones, chiming willows and duck families. When the turtle disappears one gray morning, Leo must use the same patience once more, and is rewarded with a surprise that shows how far her trust has grown.
This gentle story follows a single friendship from first shy glance to shared adventure, showing young readers how patience, quiet attention and respect for an animal's pace can build trust. It suits children in the early school years, and anyone reading aloud who wants a calm, warm tale about waiting and kindness.

The Boy and the Silver Turtle - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK
Once there was a boy named Leo who loved to wander beyond the last street of his town. He had warm light-brown skin, wavy dark brown hair, and curious hazel eyes that noticed everything. One sunny morning, with his green satchel bouncing at his side, he followed a narrow path he had never seen before. It curved behind tall bushes and smelled of mint and rain. 1
The path led to a hidden lake garden. Silver water lay perfectly still, dotted with floating lily pads. Mossy stones lined the shore, and willow trees dipped their branches like gentle curtains. Tiny glowing wildflowers sparkled in the soft mist, and fireflies danced even in the daylight. Leo stood very still, afraid to break the quiet magic of the place. 2
Then he saw something glimmer near the water's edge. It was a turtle, small as a dinner plate, with a smooth silver shell that shimmered with soft rainbow colors. Its skin was pale sagegreen, and its bright amber eyes watched Leo with shy curiosity. A single dew drop rested on its shell like a tiny jewel. The turtle blinked once, then pulled in its head. 3
Leo wanted to say hello, but he remembered how his grandma always said, “Give shy friends time.” So he sat down on a mossy stone and waited. He did not reach out or make a sound. The turtle peeked out again, its amber eyes wide. Leo smiled softly. “It's okay,” he whispered. “I can wait.” 4
The next day, Leo came back to the hidden lake garden. He brought a few fresh lettuce leaves in his satchel. The silver turtle was there, half-hidden under a willow root. Leo placed the leaves on a flat stone and sat a little farther away. The turtle watched him for a long time. Then, slowly, it stretched its short legs and took one tiny step forward. 5
Each day, Leo returned. He never rushed or grabbed. He just sat quietly, sometimes talking in a low, friendly voice. The turtle grew braver. Soon it came out whenever it heard Leo's red sneakers crunch on the pebbles. One afternoon, it walked right up to Leo's shoe and tapped it with a small, sturdy foot. Leo's heart felt warm and full. 6
“Hello, friend,” Leo said. The turtle blinked its bright amber eyes and tilted its head. Leo laughed. “Do you want to show me something?” The turtle turned and began to walk along a path lined with smooth pebbles and lantern-like blossoms. Leo followed, careful not to step too close. The silver shell gleamed as they moved through the garden. 7
The turtle led Leo to a special place where the silver lake curved like a smile. Floating lily pads formed a small bridge, and tiny fish flashed beneath them like silver coins. The turtle stepped onto a lily pad, and it did not sink. Leo gasped. “It's magic!” The turtle looked back, as if to say, “Come on!” 8
Leo stepped onto the lily pad too. It held him gently, like a soft hand. They crossed the lake together, the turtle gliding and Leo wobbling happily. On the other side, glowing wildflowers opened as they passed. The turtle showed Leo a mossy stone shaped like a heart, and a willow tree whose leaves chimed like tiny bells when the wind blew. 9
Every visit brought a new surprise. One day, the turtle led Leo to a family of ducks with fluffy babies. Another day, it showed him a spot where the mist made a rainbow. Leo learned to move slowly and to watch carefully. He learned that the lake garden had secrets for those who waited. And the silver turtle learned that Leo's soft voice meant safety. 10
Then, one gray morning, Leo arrived to find the garden empty. The turtle was not under the willow root. It was not by the lily pads. Leo's heart thumped. He searched everywhere, but the silver shell was nowhere. He sat down on a mossy stone and tried not to cry. “Maybe it's hiding,” he whispered. “Maybe it needs time.” 11
Leo waited all morning. The mist grew thick, and the fireflies blinked like tiny lanterns. He did not leave. He remembered how the turtle had slowly learned to trust him, and he knew that patience was still the key. He sat very still, breathing softly. The lake rippled once, twice, and then a familiar rainbow shimmer caught his eye. 12
The silver turtle crawled out from under a bush, a new dew drop sparkling on its shell. Behind it waddled three tiny baby turtles, their little shells like polished coins. Leo's eyes went wide. “You were busy!” he whispered. The mother turtle blinked her amber eyes and nudged a baby toward him. Leo felt a warm, happy glow. She trusted him with her family. 13
From that day on, Leo visited the hidden lake garden with even more care. He and the silver turtle explored together, always patient, always kind. The babies grew bigger and braver. Leo brought lettuce for all of them. Sometimes he just sat and watched the silver water. He knew that friendship, like the garden, grew best when you gave it time. 14
Leo's green satchel now held a small notebook. He drew pictures of the turtle and her babies, of the lily pads and the glowing flowers. He wrote, “Patience makes friends.” When he walked home, his red sneakers left soft prints on the pebble path. The turtle watched him go, her silver shell shining in the last light.
