Sam is a curious boy with warm brown skin, short curly black hair, and a small gap between his front teeth. One rainy afternoon, while splashing through puddles in the park, his red boot hits something hard—a wooden trapdoor half-hidden by ivy. Opening it, he finds dark stairs leading down and a gruff voice demanding, 'Who's there?' Despite his racing heart, Sam's curiosity wins, and he steps down to discover a secret library guarded by a badger named Mr. Diggs. The badger, with grey fur, a white striped face, round spectacles, and a dark green knitted scarf, has kept the old books safe for years but can't repair them all alone. Sam offers to help, and together they mend torn pages and loose spines, forming a bond over stories and laughter.

As days turn into weeks, Sam and Mr. Diggs become a team, but Sam notices the library remains hidden from everyone else. He asks why they keep it a secret, and Mr. Diggs admits his fear of people not caring for the books or laughing at him. Sam reassures him, and they invite the town librarian, Mrs. Maple, who is overjoyed by the discovery. Together, they clean, organize, and open the library to the town. On opening day, people crowd down the stairs, children gasp at the books, and parents thank Mr. Diggs. The library becomes the heart of the town, with story hours and new friends.

This heartwarming tale teaches children the value of sharing knowledge, the importance of friendship, and the courage to overcome fears. It shows that when we share what we love, we build community and find joy. The story is perfect for young readers who enjoy adventure, animal characters, and stories about books and libraries.

A Chapter from the Book

The Boy and the Secret Badger - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Sam was a curious boy with warm brown skin, short curly black hair, and a small gap between his front teeth. He wore a mustard yellow raincoat and red rubber boots, and he carried a canvas satchel with a brass buckle. One rainy afternoon, he splashed through puddles in the park, looking for adventure. Little did he know, a secret was waiting just below his feet. 1

As Sam jumped into a big puddle, his red boot hit something hard. It was a wooden trapdoor, half-hidden by ivy. He pulled it open and saw dark stairs going down. 'Hello?' he called. A gruff voice answered, 'Who's there?' Sam's heart beat fast, but he was too curious to run away. He took a deep breath and stepped down. 2

At the bottom, a badger with grey fur and a white striped face peered at him through round spectacles. The badger wore a dark green knitted scarf and carried a leather satchel full of bookmarks and repair tools. 'This is my secret library,' the badger said. 'I keep the old books safe.' Sam's eyes grew wide. Shelves of dusty books stretched into the shadows. 3

The badger introduced himself as Mr. Diggs. 'I've guarded these books for years,' he said. 'But they're falling apart, and I can't fix them all alone.' Sam noticed a book with a torn cover and another with loose pages. 'I can help!' Sam said. 'I'm good at fixing things.' Mr. Diggs adjusted his spectacles and smiled for the first time. 4

Sam returned the next day with glue and tape from his satchel. Mr. Diggs showed him how to mend a torn page. 'Gently,' the badger said. 'Like you're petting a butterfly.' They worked side by side, and Sam told Mr. Diggs about his love for stories. The badger listened, his pink nose twitching with interest. The dusty library felt warmer already. 5

Days turned into weeks. Sam and Mr. Diggs repaired book after book. They laughed at funny poems and gasped at daring adventures. 'You're a natural book doctor,' Mr. Diggs said. Sam beamed. 'And you're a great teacher,' he replied. The library, once silent and forgotten, now echoed with happy chatter. But Sam noticed the books were still hidden from everyone else. 6

One evening, Sam asked, 'Why keep the library a secret? Stories are meant to be shared.' Mr. Diggs frowned. 'What if people don't take care of them? What if they laugh at me?' Sam put a hand on the badger's paw. 'I'll be right there with you,' he said. 'We can share them together.' Mr. Diggs looked at the dusty shelves and nodded slowly. 7

Sam had an idea. 'Let's invite the town librarian, Mrs. Maple!' he said. 'She loves books as much as we do.' Mr. Diggs was nervous but agreed. The next day, Sam led the tall, stooped librarian with silver hair in a loose bun and bright green eyes down the stairs. She wore a plum cardigan and round wooden beads. 'Oh my!' she gasped. 'A secret library!' 8

Mrs. Maple clapped her hands with joy. 'These books are treasures!' she said. 'We must catalogue them and let everyone read them.' Mr. Diggs's spectacles fogged up with happy tears. 'You really think people will come?' he asked. 'I know they will,' Mrs. Maple said. 'And they'll love you for keeping these stories safe.' Sam grinned, his gap-toothed smile wide. 9

Together, they cleaned and organized. Sam dusted shelves, Mr. Diggs repaired spines, and Mrs. Maple wrote labels. Word spread through town. On opening day, people crowded down the stairs. Children gasped at the books, and parents thanked Mr. Diggs. The badger stood tall, his green scarf wrapped snugly, and welcomed everyone. 'Welcome to our library,' he said. 'Please, read and enjoy.' 10

The library became the heart of the town. Sam and Mr. Diggs held story hours, and Mrs. Maple helped visitors find books. 'Knowledge is best when it's shared,' Sam said one day. Mr. Diggs nodded. 'And friends make books even better,' he added. They looked at the crowded room, full of readers of all ages, and smiled. The secret was out, and it was wonderful. 11

Mr. Diggs no longer worried about being laughed at. Children loved him and brought him acorns as gifts. He taught them how to repair books, and Sam helped. The library grew busier every week. 'I never knew sharing could feel so good,' Mr. Diggs said. 'That's because you're not alone anymore,' Sam replied. The badger's pink nose twitched happily. 12

One afternoon, Mrs. Maple announced, 'We need more shelves for all these new books!' Everyone pitched in. Sam painted a sign that read 'The Underground Library – Open to All.' Mr. Diggs hung it above the trapdoor. 'No more secrets,' he said. 'Except the secret of how much fun we have here,' Sam laughed. They high-fived, paw to hand. 13

At the end of the day, Sam and Mr. Diggs sat among the books. 'You taught me that sharing is brave,' Mr. Diggs said. 'And you taught me that even old books have new stories to tell,' Sam replied. They promised to keep the library running together. Mrs. Maple brought cocoa, and they planned their next story hour. The library felt like home. 14

From then on, Sam visited every day after school. He'd climb down the stairs, calling, 'Mr. Diggs, I'm here!' and the badger would wave from behind a stack of books. The town loved their library, and the once-forgotten books were read and loved again. Sam learned that knowledge grows when it's shared, and Mr. Diggs learned that friends make everything better.
