The Boy and the Sea Dragon - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

On a bright sunny morning, a small boy with sandy-brown hair and bright green eyes walked along the beach. His yellow rain boots squelched in the wet sand, and his red shirt flapped in the breeze. He loved exploring the shore, searching for shells and watching the waves roll in. Today, something sparkled in a shallow tide pool, catching his eye. 1

The boy knelt down and peered into the clear water. There, no bigger than his hand, was a tiny dragon with shimmering turquoise scales and glowing amber eyes. It had little pearlwhite horns and translucent fins that left a trail of sparkles. "Hello," the boy whispered. The dragon blinked and tilted its head. "I'm Pepper," it said in a tiny, bubbly voice. 2

The boy's freckled nose crinkled with delight. "I'm Finn!" he said. Pepper swam in happy circles, his curling tail tip flicking sparkles into the air. "Do you want to see something secret?" Pepper asked. Finn nodded eagerly. He followed Pepper into the gentle waves, and the water felt warm and welcoming. Down they went, into a world of blue light and swaying seaweed. 3

Pepper led Finn through forests of kelp and over rocks covered in colorful anemones. Fish darted past like silver arrows. "Where are we going?" Finn asked. "To the nursery," Pepper said mysteriously. They swam deeper, and the water grew calm and quiet. Finn's green eyes widened as a soft glow appeared ahead, like a lantern in the deep. 4

In a sheltered cove, surrounded by tall coral, lay the underwater nursery. Baby sea creatures floated and played— tiny seahorses, little starfish, and baby turtles no bigger than Finn's palm. "Oh!" Finn breathed. "They're so small!" Pepper smiled. "I help take care of them," he said proudly. "But I'm glad you're here. It's a big job for one little dragon." 5

Just then, a large sea turtle glided toward them. Her mossy green shell was as big as a kitchen table, and a strand of tiny shells looped around one flipper. "Welcome, Finn," she said in a slow, wise voice. "I am Nana Coral. Pepper has told me about you." Finn blinked. "He has?" Nana Coral nodded. "Pepper trusts you. That means you must be a good friend." 6

Finn spent the whole afternoon at the nursery. He helped Pepper count the baby seahorses and tickle the tiny starfish. The little ones giggled and swirled around him. "You're a natural helper," Pepper said. Finn beamed, his gap-toothed smile wide. He felt happy and useful, like he belonged in this secret underwater world. But then the water around them began to swirl. 7

Nana Coral raised her head. "The current is changing," she said. "A powerful current is coming. We must protect the little ones!" Finn felt his heart beat fast. The baby creatures huddled together, frightened. Pepper's amber eyes glowed with determination. "We can do this," Pepper said. "Finn, will you help?" Finn nodded. "I'm ready." 8

The powerful current surged toward the nursery, pushing everything in its path. Seaweed bent low, and small rocks tumbled. "Quick!" Nana Coral called. "Hold onto the coral!" Finn grabbed a sturdy branch of coral with one hand and reached for a baby turtle with the other. Pepper darted around, nudging the little ones into safe crevices. The current tugged and pulled, but Finn held on tight. 9

Pepper's tiny fins flapped hard as he herded a group of baby seahorses behind a rock. "This way!" he chirped. Finn scooped up two starfish and tucked them into a pocket of his shorts. Nana Coral used her big shell to block the current from the smallest babies. "Steady, everyone!" she called. The water roared, but the nursery friends worked together, and slowly the current began to weaken. 10

When the water finally grew calm, Finn let out a big breath. "We did it!" he cheered. But then he noticed a baby seahorse drifting away, caught in a leftover swirl. Without thinking, Finn kicked his yellow boots and swam after it. "Got you!" he said, cradling the tiny creature. Pepper swam beside him, his sparkles lighting the way back to the nursery. 11

Nana Coral smiled, her wrinkled face gentle. "You were brave and responsible, Finn," she said. "You didn't just play with the little ones—you protected them." Pepper nodded. "That's what friends do," he said. Finn looked at the baby seahorse in his hands and felt proud. "I couldn't have done it without you, Pepper," he said. "And you, Nana Coral." 12

The baby creatures gathered around Finn, nuzzling him with tiny fins and flippers. "Thank you, Finn!" they chirped. Nana Coral gave him a small shell from her strand. "A reminder of your promise," she said. "Being a good friend means being responsible. You showed that today." Finn tied the shell to his rope bracelet. It sparkled in the underwater light. 13

As the sun began to set, Finn knew he had to go home. "Will you come back?" Pepper asked. "Every day!" Finn promised. Nana Coral waved her flipper. "The nursery will always welcome you." Finn hugged Pepper gently, then swam up toward the surface. When he looked back, he saw Pepper's amber eyes glowing like two little stars. 14

Back on the beach, Finn's yellow boots left footprints in the sand. His red shirt was damp, and his freckled face wore a big smile. His mother asked, "What did you do today?" Finn thought of the nursery and his friends. "I learned about being responsible," he said. "And I made a new friend." He touched the tiny shell on his bracelet.
