The Boy and the Sapphire Frog - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Leo loved exploring the rainforest near his home. With his bright yellow rain boots and canvas explorer satchel, he felt like a real adventurer. One warm afternoon, he followed a winding path deep into the trees. The air smelled of wet leaves and sweet flowers. He heard a chorus of insects humming and birds calling high above. 1

Suddenly, Leo spotted something glowing near a small pond. It was a tiny frog, no bigger than his palm, with deep sapphireblue skin. Along its back and legs, bright cyan markings shimmered like tiny stars. Its big round amber eyes blinked at him, and its golden toe pads clung to a wet leaf. 2

"Hello, little frog," Leo whispered. The frog tilted its head and let out a soft, musical chirp. Then it hopped onto a mossy stone, leaving a faint sparkle of light in the air. Leo's dark brown eyes widened with wonder. He quickly pulled out his map and marked the spot with a little star. 3

The sapphire frog hopped from stone to stone, its glowing markings lighting the way. Leo followed, his boots squelching in the mud. The frog led him past giant ferns and twisting vines. Soon, they reached a hidden pond that Leo had never seen before. It sparkled like a giant emerald in the dappled sunlight. 4

The pond was enchanted! Bright pink lilies floated on the water, and purple flowers climbed the banks. Tiny insects with golden wings sang a sweet melody. Leo gasped as a dragonfly with rainbow wings zipped past his nose. "This is amazing!" he breathed. The frog puffed out its chest proudly, as if saying, "Welcome to my home." 5

A gentle voice called out from a nearby rock. "Hello there, young explorer." Leo turned to see a turtle about the size of a dinner plate. Its shell was covered in moss, tiny ferns, and little mushrooms. A woven reed hat sat on its head, and a tiny lantern hung from its shell. The turtle smiled warmly. 6

"I am Moss, the guardian of this pond," the turtle said. "And I see you've met Sapphire, our rare and special frog." Leo nodded, his freckled nose twitching with excitement. Sapphire hopped onto Moss's shell and blinked its amber eyes. "Would you like to explore our enchanted pond?" Moss asked. Leo grinned, showing the little gap in his front teeth. 7

Moss led Leo and Sapphire along the pond's edge. "Watch your step," Moss said. "Every creature here has a job." They met a family of ducklings who kept the water moving. Bees buzzed from flower to flower, helping plants grow. "Even the smallest bug matters," Moss explained. Leo listened carefully, taking mental notes like a true explorer. 8

Just then, a tiny firefly zipped up to Leo's nose. It had a glossy black body and a warm golden glow. "Hi! I'm Pip!" it chirped, its violet eyes sparkling. Pip carried a minuscule leaf umbrella and waved it like a flag. "I lead the singing insect chorus! Want to hear?" Before Leo could answer, Pip zoomed off, leaving a trail of golden light. 9

Pip conducted the insects with its antennae, and the pond filled with music. Crickets chirped, beetles hummed, and the fireflies flashed in rhythm. Sapphire hopped along the lily pads, its cyan markings pulsing with the beat. Leo clapped his hands and laughed. "This is the best adventure ever!" he shouted. Moss chuckled, his hazel eyes twinkling. 10

After the song, Moss grew serious. "Leo," he said softly, "Sapphire is very rare. There are only a few sapphire frogs left in the whole rainforest. They need clean water and safe plants to survive." Leo looked at Sapphire, who blinked back at him with big amber eyes. "Why are they so rare?" Leo asked. 11

Moss explained, "People sometimes leave trash or dirty the water. That hurts the pond and all its creatures." Leo's brow furrowed. He thought about how much he loved this magical place. "I don't want Sapphire to disappear," he said. "What can I do to help?" Moss smiled. "Even small actions can make a big difference." 12

Leo jumped up. "I can keep the pond clean!" he declared. "I'll tell my friends not to litter, and I'll pick up any trash I find." Sapphire hopped onto Leo's shoulder and chirped happily. Pip zipped around them, leaving sparkles in the air. "We'll help too!" Pip promised. Moss nodded, his reed hat bobbing. "That is a wonderful promise, Leo." 13

From that day on, Leo visited the enchanted pond often. He brought a small bag for trash and always left the pond cleaner than he found it. Sapphire greeted him with a happy hop, and Pip led the insects in a welcome song. Moss shared more secrets of the forest, and Leo learned something new every visit. 14

Leo told his friends at school about the rare sapphire frog. He showed them how to protect ponds and streams. "Rare creatures deserve our care," he said. His friends joined him, and together they made little signs that read "Keep Our Water Clean." The rainforest felt a little safer for Sapphire and all its friends. 15

One evening, as the sun set behind the trees, Leo sat by the pond. Sapphire rested on a lily pad, its glowing markings shining in the twilight. Pip and the insects sang a gentle lullaby. Moss smiled from his rock. "You've made a real difference, Leo," he said. Leo smiled back, his heart full of happiness. He knew he would always protect this magical place.
