The Boy and the Orange Octopus

The Boy and the Orange Octopus

🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:29

Sam is a curious boy who loves the ocean more than anything. One day, wearing his yellow rash guard and red snorkel mask and carrying a small waterproof satchel, he dives into the warm, sparkling water for a big adventure. Past pink corals, green seaweed and a swaying kelp forest, he spots a bright flash of orange behind a coral arch: an orange octopus is painting on a flat rock, using its arms like paintbrushes and a shell pot of paint.

Since they cannot speak underwater, Sam and the octopus find another way to talk. Sam draws on a slate from his satchel, the octopus paints pictures back, and art becomes their special language. A little blue fish with shiny scales joins them, then brings three friends, and a wise old sea turtle glides down to show Sam how to blend colors gently. Together they turn a blank stretch of rock into a glowing reef mural. When a big wave smudges part of the painting, the octopus shows Sam that mistakes can become part of the art, and the smudge turns into the most colorful part of all.

This gentle picture-book story is for young children and for anyone sharing a book with a beginning reader. It shows how friendship can grow without words, how teamwork makes something bigger than any one artist could make alone, and how a mistake can be turned into something beautiful.

A Chapter from the Book

The Boy and the Orange Octopus - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Sam was a curious boy with warm light-brown skin, curly dark brown hair, and freckles across his nose. He loved the ocean more than anything. Every day, he pulled on his bright yellow rash guard and blue swim shorts. He pushed his red snorkel mask up on his forehead and grabbed his small waterproof satchel. Today, he was ready for a big adventure under the sea. 1

Sam waded into the warm, sparkling water. He put on his mask and dove down, down, down. The ocean was full of color: pink corals, green seaweed, and fish like rainbow confetti. Sam swam past a swaying kelp forest. He felt like a tiny explorer in a giant blue world. Then, something caught his eye—a bright flash of orange. 2

Behind a coral arch, Sam saw the most amazing thing. An orange octopus was painting on a flat rock! The octopus had vivid orange skin, large amber eyes, and a tiny shell on its head. One arm held a shell pot of paint. Its arms curled like paintbrushes, making swirls of purple and pink. Sam stared, his hazel eyes wide with wonder. 3

The octopus noticed Sam and waved an arm in greeting. Sam waved back, but he couldn't speak underwater. Bubbles floated from his mouth instead of words. He pointed at the painting and gave a thumbs-up. The octopus tilted its head, then dipped an arm in yellow paint. It drew a smiley face on the rock. Sam smiled a big, gap-toothed smile. 4

The octopus introduced itself by painting a picture of an octopus and a boy shaking hands. Sam understood! He pulled a small slate from his satchel and drew a boy and an octopus swimming together. The octopus's amber eyes sparkled. It painted a big heart. They had found a way to talk without words. Art was their special language. 5

The octopus pointed to a blank stretch of rock and then to Sam's satchel. Sam pulled out a tiny brush and some waterproof paints. The octopus clapped its arms together. It painted a welcome sign: a picture of Sam and the octopus painting side by side. Sam felt happy. They were going to make something together. 6

Just then, a little blue fish darted over. It had shiny sky-blue scales, a silver belly, and big round dark eyes. The fish wiggled its fins at the painting. The octopus painted a tiny fish and pointed at the blue paint. The little fish nodded eagerly. It swished its tail and added a splash of blue to the rock. Sam laughed, bubbles rising. 7

The little blue fish zoomed away and came back with three friends. They all wanted to help. The octopus painted a school of fish, and the fish added their own colors. Sam painted a bright yellow sun. The rock was turning into a beautiful mural. More fish arrived, carrying tiny bits of colorful coral and shells to decorate the edges. 8

A large shadow moved over them. Sam looked up and saw a giant sea turtle gliding down. The turtle had a green-brown patterned shell with mossy patches and gentle dark eyes. Around its neck was a string of pearl-like shells. The turtle smiled a slow, wise smile. It watched the painting grow and nodded approvingly. 9

The turtle swam closer and painted a slow, careful spiral with one flipper. It showed Sam how to blend colors gently. Sam tried, and the colors swirled together like magic. The octopus painted a picture of the turtle, and the turtle bowed its head. Everyone was working together, and the mural was glowing with teamwork. 10

Suddenly, a big wave whooshed by and smudged part of the mural. Sam's smile turned upside down. The colors ran together in a messy blur. The little blue fish looked worried. But the octopus didn't frown. It painted a picture of a wave and then a picture of a rainbow. Then it pointed at the smudged part and made a funny face. 11

Sam understood. Mistakes could be part of the art! He dipped his brush in bright paint and turned the smudge into a swirling whirlpool. The octopus added sparkly dots. The little blue fish and its friends added more splashes. The turtle painted gentle lines. The smudge became the most colorful part of the mural. 12

The mural was finished. It showed a bright reef with fish, a turtle, an octopus, and a boy, all painted in glowing colors. The octopus painted a final picture: a boy and an octopus with a heart between them. Sam drew a picture of a paintbrush and a smile. They didn't need words to say, "We are friends." 13

All the fish swam around the mural, their scales shimmering. The turtle gave a slow, happy nod. The octopus wrapped a friendly arm around Sam's shoulder. Sam felt warm inside. He had learned that art is a special way to communicate. Pictures and kindness can make friends anywhere, even under the sea. 14

Sam pointed to his chest and then to the octopus, making a heart shape with his hands. The octopus painted a tiny heart on Sam's satchel. The little blue fish did a happy flip. The turtle blinked its gentle eyes. It was time for Sam to go home, but he would never forget his orange friend and their glowing mural.
