The Boy and the Little Penguin

The Boy and the Little Penguin

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

On a quiet snowy day, Ben puts on his red pompom hat, blue puffy coat and yellow mittens and follows tiny tracks past the old oak tree. A shimmering path appears between the snowdrifts, and when he steps onto it he finds himself in Ice Village, a magical polar world of ice houses and dancing snowflakes. There he meets Pip, a small round penguin wearing a green scarf with a silver snowflake charm, who welcomes him and shares a problem: the snow crystals that make the village's winter festival sparkle have disappeared.

Ben and Pip set out to solve the mystery together. They follow frosty footprints and gather clues, meeting Gran Elsa, an ice spirit who explains that she grew sleepy while watching the crystals. Her hint about a fluffy snowball leads them to Toffle, a snow sprite who loves shiny things and has been playing with the crystals in his cozy cave. Rather than scolding him, Ben and Pip listen, explain why the crystals matter, and offer him a kinder way to collect sparkle.

The story shows young readers how patience, careful listening and cooperation can solve a problem, and how including someone new can turn a mistake into a friendship. It is suited to children in the early primary years, whether read aloud at bedtime or enjoyed alone, and offers gentle talking points about empathy and sharing.

A Chapter from the Book

The Boy and the Little Penguin - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Ben loved snowy days. He pulled on his red pompom hat, blue puffy coat, and yellow mittens. Outside, the world was white and quiet. He followed tiny tracks past the old oak tree. Suddenly, a shimmering path appeared between the snowdrifts. It sparkled like a thousand tiny stars. Ben took a deep breath and stepped onto the path. 1

The path led to a magical polar world. Ben gasped. Everything was made of ice and snow! Ice houses with icy chimneys lined the streets. Snowflakes danced in the air. A sign made of icicles read 'Ice Village'. Ben's brown eyes grew wide. He had never seen anything so beautiful. He wondered if anyone lived here. 2

Just then, a little penguin waddled up. It was knee-high and round, with a black back, white belly, and bright orange beak. A tiny green scarf with a silver snowflake charm hung around its neck. 'Hello!' chirped the penguin. 'I'm Pip. Are you lost?' Ben smiled. 'I'm Ben. I found a secret path.' Pip's glossy eyes sparkled. 'Welcome to Ice Village!' 3

Pip led Ben through the icy streets. 'Our winter festival is tomorrow,' Pip explained. 'But something terrible happened.' Pip pointed to a large ice pedestal in the village square. It was empty. 'The snow crystals that make the festival sparkle are gone!' Pip's little voice wobbled. Ben listened carefully. 'Don't worry,' he said. 'We'll find them together.' 4

Pip chattered excitedly, pointing out clues. 'The crystals were here last night. I saw a sparkle near the ice fountain!' Ben looked around. He noticed tiny frosty footprints leading away. 'Let's follow them,' he said. Pip nodded. They walked past ice houses and snow sculptures. The footprints led to a snowy hill at the edge of the village. 5

On the hill, they met Gran Elsa, an ice spirit with pale blue skin and long silver hair. She wore a gown trimmed with icicles. 'Oh dear,' she said, her voice like tinkling bells. 'I was watching the crystals. But I got sleepy and forgot where I put them.' Ben asked gently, 'Can you remember anything?' Gran Elsa thought. 'I saw a sparkle and then a fluffy snowball.' 6

Pip's eyes widened. 'A fluffy snowball? That sounds like Toffle!' Ben asked, 'Who is Toffle?' Pip explained, 'A snow sprite. He loves shiny things. He carries a little satchel.' Ben said, 'Then we should find Toffle and ask him.' Gran Elsa smiled. 'Listening is the first step to understanding.' They thanked her and hurried off. 7

Ben and Pip searched everywhere. They looked behind ice trees and under snow benches. Pip's little feet left tiny prints. Ben's boots crunched. 'There!' Pip pointed. A trail of sparkling frost led to a cozy cave. Inside, they saw a small, round snowball creature. It had teal eyes and a brown satchel tied with a red ribbon. It was Toffle! 8

Toffle was playing with the snow crystals. They glittered in his stubby arms. 'Oh!' Toffle squeaked. 'Aren't they pretty? I found them and wanted to keep them.' Pip stepped forward. 'Toffle, those crystals are for the winter festival. Without them, the village won't sparkle.' Ben added kindly, 'We need them back. But we can find you other shiny things.' 9

Toffle looked sad. 'I didn't know,' he said. 'I just wanted something sparkly.' Ben knelt down. 'It's okay. We can help you find shiny pebbles instead.' Pip nodded. 'And you can come to the festival!' Toffle's teal eyes brightened. 'Really? I can come?' Ben smiled. 'Of course! Everyone is welcome.' Toffle handed over the crystals. 10

Ben and Pip carried the crystals back to the village. Gran Elsa met them at the pedestal. 'You found them!' she cheered. 'And you made a new friend!' Toffle shyly waved. Gran Elsa placed the crystals on the pedestal. They glowed brightly. The whole village sparkled. 'Thank you, Ben and Pip,' Gran Elsa said. 'You listened and helped each other.' 11

That night, the winter festival began. Ice lanterns twinkled. Music played. Penguins danced. Toffle wore a tiny bow and handed out shiny pebbles. Ben and Pip watched the snow crystals glow. 'We did it!' Pip cheered. Ben smiled. 'We did it together.' Gran Elsa raised a glass of icy juice. 'To friendship and understanding!' Everyone cheered. 12

Ben knew it was time to go home. 'Will you come back?' Pip asked. Ben hugged his friend. 'I'll try. The secret path might appear again.' Pip gave Ben a tiny snowflake charm. 'To remember me.' Ben's eyes felt warm. 'I'll never forget you, Pip.' They waved goodbye as Ben stepped onto the shimmering path. 13

Ben walked home through the snow. The path faded behind him. In his pocket, the little snowflake charm felt warm. He could still hear the festival music. He smiled, thinking of Pip and Toffle. He had solved a mystery and made new friends. Friendship, he learned, makes the world sparkle. 14

Back home, Ben's mom asked, 'Where did you go?' Ben showed her the snowflake charm. 'I made a friend,' he said. 'And we fixed a big problem.' His mom smiled. 'You look happy.' Ben nodded. He knew that listening and helping others could fix big problems. And that true friendship is the best sparkle of all. 15

That night, Ben dreamed of Ice Village. He saw Pip waving, Toffle juggling pebbles, and Gran Elsa smiling. He heard the festival music and saw the snow crystals glow. He woke up with a warm heart. Friendship had brought understanding, and understanding had brought joy. And somewhere, a little penguin was dreaming of Ben too.
