The Boy and the Little Jerboa

The Boy and the Little Jerboa

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Leo is a young explorer who loves the desert near his home. One morning, he packs his satchel with a notebook, a pencil, and a big smile, ready to study desert rodents. He sits quietly by a sandy burrow, sketching the animals he sees. Just as he is about to give up, a small creature emerges: a jerboa with sandy-gold fur, a white belly, huge dark eyes, and long back legs. Leo is captivated by its amazing jumping ability and begins to observe its adaptations up close.

As Leo watches, he notes how the jerboa's long back legs and big feet help it leap high and land softly on the sand. Its long tail acts as a balance, and its small front paws are perfect for digging burrows. Leo is impressed by how the jerboa's sandy-gold fur blends with the desert, keeping it hidden from danger. He tries to hop like the jerboa but finds it much harder than it looks. Inspired, Leo decides to build a model of the jerboa that can really jump, using cardboard, rubber bands, and a wooden stick. With his mom's help, he creates 'Jumpy,' a model that demonstrates how the jerboa's legs store energy.

Leo takes Jumpy to school for science day, where he explains to his classmates how jerboas adapt to desert life. His teacher praises his curiosity and creativity. That evening, Leo reflects on his adventure and writes in his notebook: 'Nature is full of surprises.' He learns that even tiny creatures have remarkable adaptations and that curiosity can lead to wonderful discoveries. This heartwarming story encourages young readers to observe nature, ask questions, and appreciate the ingenious ways animals survive in their environments.

The Boy and the Little Jerboa - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Leo loved the desert near his home. Every morning, he packed his explorer satchel with a notebook, a pencil, and a big smile. Today, he was going to study desert rodents. He walked past the prickly cacti and the dry, crackly bushes. The sand felt warm under his red sneakers. Leo was ready for a new adventure. 1

Leo sat very still next to a sandy burrow. He opened his notebook and waited. Desert rodents are shy, so he had to be patient. He drew a tiny mouse with big ears. Then he drew a kangaroo rat with a long tail. But the best was yet to come. Something small was moving nearby. 2

Suddenly, a little creature popped out of a burrow. It had soft sandy-gold fur and a white belly. Its huge dark eyes blinked at Leo. It had very long back legs and big feet. Its tail was long and thin with a tuft at the end. It was a jerboa! Leo's heart did a happy hop. 3

The jerboa wiggled its nose. It looked at Leo with its big round eyes. Then, with a mighty push, it leaped into the air. It jumped so high, like a tiny rocket! Leo gasped. The jerboa landed softly on the sand. Then it jumped again. And again! Each jump was longer than the last. 4

Leo watched the little jerboa leap. He wrote in his notebook: 'Long back legs for jumping.' He drew the jerboa's big feet. They were like small snowshoes, perfect for landing on soft sand. The jerboa's tail stuck out behind. When it turned, the tail swung to keep it balanced. Leo smiled. This was a wonderful adaptation. 5

The jerboa stopped and nibbled a seed. Leo noticed how its small front paws held the food. The jerboa's big ears twitched, listening for danger. Its sandy-gold fur blended with the desert sand. It was an expert at hiding. 'You are clever,' Leo whispered. The jerboa looked up. Then it leaped again, as if to say, 'Watch this!' 6

The jerboa jumped over a small rock. Its long tail waved like a flag. Leo tried to imagine jumping like that. He stood up and tried a little hop. It was not easy! The jerboa made it look simple. Leo laughed. He drew the jerboa in mid-jump. Its legs stretched out, and its tail curved like a question mark. 7

Leo noticed the jerboa's tiny front paws. They were perfect for digging. The jerboa dug a small hole and popped inside. Then it poked its head out. Leo wrote: 'Strong front paws for digging burrows.' The jerboa's burrow would keep it cool in the hot desert sun. Another clever adaptation! Leo felt lucky to see it. 8

The sun climbed higher. Leo's stomach rumbled. He packed his notebook. But before he left, the jerboa did one last leap. It jumped right over a cactus! Then it disappeared into its burrow. Leo waved goodbye. 'Thank you, little jerboa,' he said. 'You are the best jumper I have ever seen.' He walked home, full of ideas. 9

Back home, Leo spread his drawings on the table. He wanted to build a model of the jerboa. A model that could really jump! He found cardboard, rubber bands, and a small wooden stick. He cut out long back legs and big feet. He made a tail from a piece of string. His mom helped with the glue. 10

Leo worked carefully. He attached the legs with rubber bands. When he pulled the stick back, the rubber bands stretched. Let go, and SNAP! The model jumped! Leo tested it. It hopped across the table. 'Look, Mom!' he cried. 'It really jumps!' His mom clapped. The model showed how the jerboa's long legs stored energy. Just like the real jerboa! 11

Leo added a white belly and big eyes to the model. He gave it a tufted tail for balance. The model looked just like the little jerboa. He called it 'Jumpy.' Then he took Jumpy to school for science day. His classmates gathered around. Leo explained how jerboas adapt to the desert. 'Their long feet and tail help them jump and balance,' he said. 12

Leo pulled the stick. Jumpy leaped into the air and landed on the table. Everyone cheered. 'Small animals have remarkable adaptations!' Leo announced. His teacher smiled. 'You studied nature and made something wonderful,' she said. Leo beamed. Jumpy did a little victory jump. It was a happy day. 13

That evening, Leo sat on his porch. He thought about the little jerboa. It was small, but it had amazing ways to survive. Leo learned that curiosity can lead to fun discoveries. He wrote in his notebook: 'Nature is full of surprises.' He couldn't wait to explore again tomorrow. The desert was full of wonders. 14

Leo placed Jumpy on his shelf. The model reminded him of the lively jerboa. He learned that even tiny creatures have big adaptations. And he learned that watching nature can inspire great ideas. 'Thank you, little jerboa,' he whispered. 'You taught me a lot.' The model stood ready for another jump. Leo smiled and turned off the light. 15

The next morning, Leo packed his satchel. He was ready for a new adventure. Maybe he would see the jerboa again. Or maybe he would find another desert rodent. He knew that with patience and a curious heart, he would discover something wonderful. The desert called to him. And Leo followed, one happy step at a time.
