Sam is a curious boy with warm light-brown skin, messy dark brown hair and freckles, who loves to explore and always hurries because he wants to see everything at once. One evening, wearing his mustard-yellow hoodie and red rain boots and carrying a small canvas satchel, he sets off into the forest behind his house. When the trees grow tall and the light grows dim, Sam realizes he has wandered off the path and nothing looks familiar. Just as worry sets in, he spots a soft golden glow between the ferns: a turtle with a mossy green shell, tiny glowing amber cracks and a small brass lantern on its back. The Lantern Turtle explains that it helps lost animals find their way home in the dark, and Sam eagerly asks to help too.
The turtle's first lesson is patience. When Sam rushes ahead, the turtle tells him to wait and listen, and together they discover a small cream-white rabbit with a blue ribbon tied around one ear, trembling under the ferns. Sam learns to kneel, stay still and speak softly so the frightened rabbit will trust the warm light of the lantern. Following the turtle's slow pace over a mossy trail, a fallen log and a babbling brook, they lead the rabbit back to its family. Their walk continues when a fox cub with a woven grass collar and a wooden acorn charm pops out of a bush, insisting it is not lost but only exploring. Sam holds his tongue, keeps his steps slow and his voice gentle, and the three of them walk together until the cub hears its mother's call.
The story is written for young children and for the adults who read aloud to them. Through Sam's evening in the forest, it shows that rushing can scare others, while patience and kindness light the way, and it offers a quiet, warm tale about listening, slowing down and helping those who are afraid.

A Chapter from the Book
The Boy and the Lantern Turtle - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK
Once there was a boy named Sam who loved to explore. He had warm light-brown skin, messy dark brown hair, and freckles across his nose. One evening, he put on his mustardyellow hoodie, dark blue shorts, and red rain boots. He packed a small canvas satchel with a snack and a flashlight, then set off into the forest behind his house. 1
The forest was quiet and cool. Sam followed a winding path, kicking leaves and hopping over roots. He was in a hurry, as always, because he wanted to see everything at once. But the trees grew tall and the light grew dim. Soon, Sam realized he had wandered off the path. He looked around, but nothing looked familiar. 2
Just as Sam began to worry, he saw a soft golden glow between the ferns. He pushed the leaves aside and gasped. There sat a turtle about the size of a dinner plate, with a mossy green shell. Tiny amber cracks in the shell glowed warmly. On its back was a small brass lantern with a flickering flame. The turtle's golden eyes blinked slowly, and it smiled. 3
"Hello, little one," said the turtle in a gentle, creaky voice. "I am the Lantern Turtle. I help lost animals find their way home in the dark." Sam's eyes went wide. "That's amazing!" he cried. "Can I help too? I want to lead animals home!" The turtle chuckled softly. "Patience, young friend. Helping takes a slow and steady heart." 4
Sam bounced on his toes. "I can be patient!" he said, though he wasn't sure what that meant. The turtle began to walk, very slowly, toward a thick patch of ferns. Sam hurried ahead, but the turtle said, "Wait. Listen." Sam stopped. At first he heard nothing. Then, a tiny sniffle came from under the ferns. Sam rushed forward to look, but the turtle gently touched his boot. "Softly," it whispered. 5
Under the fern, a small cream-white rabbit huddled, trembling. It had long floppy ears with pink insides and a tiny blue ribbon tied around one ear. Its big watery brown eyes were full of tears. When Sam moved too fast, the rabbit squeaked and pressed deeper into the leaves. "It's scared," said the turtle. "We must be calm and quiet." 6
Sam took a deep breath. He knelt down and stayed very still. The turtle's lantern cast a warm, steady glow. "Hello, little rabbit," Sam said softly. "We're here to help you find your home." The rabbit's nose twitched. It looked at the gentle light, then at Sam's kind face. Slowly, it hopped out from under the fern, its whiskers trembling. 7
"Follow the lantern," said the turtle. The rabbit hopped close to the turtle's shell, and Sam walked beside them, matching their slow pace. They went along a mossy trail, over a fallen log, and past a babbling brook. The rabbit's ears perked up. "I know this place!" it seemed to say. Soon, they heard soft thumping sounds. A family of rabbits appeared, their eyes bright with joy. 8
The little rabbit bounded to its mother, who nuzzled it gently. The blue ribbon fluttered as the rabbit hopped in happy circles. Sam felt a warm glow inside. "We did it!" he whispered. The turtle smiled. "Patience helped," it said. "Now, let's see who else might need us." They continued through the forest, the lantern swinging softly on the turtle's back. 9
As they walked, a rustle came from a bush. Out popped a little fox cub, knee-high to Sam. It had russet-orange fur, a white chest, and a small woven grass collar with a wooden acorn charm. One ear was slightly bent. The fox tried to look brave, but its amber eyes were wide with worry. "I'm not lost!" it said quickly. "I'm just... exploring." 10
Sam started to say, "But you're going the wrong way," but the turtle nudged him. "Let's walk together," the turtle said gently. The fox cub hesitated, then followed. Sam kept his voice soft and his steps slow. They walked past tall trees and through a clearing where moonbeams danced. The fox cub's tail swished nervously, but it stayed close to the lantern's light. 11
Soon, they heard a soft howl in the distance. The fox cub's ears perked up. "That's my mother!" it cried. It started to run, but Sam said, "Wait. Let's go together, slowly." The fox cub nodded, and they walked side by side. They found the mother fox near a den under a big oak tree. The cub yelped with joy and dashed to her, its acorn charm bouncing. 12
The mother fox licked her cub and looked at Sam and the turtle with grateful eyes. Sam felt his heart swell. "You see?" said the turtle. "Rushing scares others. Patience and kindness light the way." Sam nodded. He understood now. He had helped two animals find their homes, not by being fast, but by being calm and gentle. 13
As the night grew deeper, the turtle turned to Sam. "You have learned well, young friend. Now it is time for you to go home, too." Sam looked around. He wasn't sure which way to go. "Will you help me?" he asked. The turtle chuckled. "Of course. Just follow the lantern." They walked slowly through the forest, the warm glow showing the path.
