🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:37

Toby lives in a cozy village by the sea, where he spends his days exploring the rocky shore and collecting shells. He sometimes feels a little different from the other children and wonders whether that is okay. One sunny morning he meets Shelly, an emerald-green turtle with golden patterns on her shell and translucent wing-like fins that let her glide above the sand. Shelly tells him about a floating island high in the sky, and Toby climbs onto her shell for the journey.

Together they soar over green hills and sparkling rivers, naming cloud shapes and laughing at Shelly's funny stories. On the floating island they explore winding paths, share glowing fruit that tastes like honey and sunshine, and face a swaying rope bridge that tests Toby's courage. When a family of little birds loses its nest, Toby and Shelly use his backpack and her strong shell to build a new one, and when a rock slide blocks their way home, they clear it by working side by side. Along the way Shelly helps Toby see that being different is what makes each of them special, and that curiosity and kindness are their own kind of magic.

This gentle children's tale is suited to young readers and to adults reading aloud with them. It offers a warm story about courage, cooperation and self-acceptance, showing how two very different friends can help each other through small fears and unexpected obstacles.

A Chapter from the Book

The Boy and the Flying Turtle - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Toby lived in a cozy village by the sea. He had messy chestnutbrown hair with a cowlick that never stayed down, and a bright yellow t-shirt he wore almost every day. He loved exploring the rocky shore, collecting shells and watching the waves. But sometimes Toby felt a little different from the other kids, and he wondered if that was okay. 1

One sunny morning, Toby saw something strange near the water. A large turtle with an emerald-green shell and swirling golden patterns was gliding just above the sand! Translucent wing-like fins fluttered along the shell's edges, and the turtle's amber eyes sparkled. Toby gasped. "Wow! You can fly?" The turtle smiled. "I'm Shelly. I glide, actually." 2

Toby and Shelly talked for hours. Shelly wore a woven vine bracelet on one leg and spoke in a gentle, playful voice. She told Toby about a floating island high in the sky, full of secret paths and hidden treasures. Toby's hazel eyes grew wide. "Can you take me there?" he asked. Shelly nodded. "Hop on my shell, and hold tight!" 3

Toby climbed onto Shelly's golden-patterned shell and held on to the edge. With a soft whoosh, Shelly lifted off the ground. They rose above the village, above the tallest trees, and into the bright blue sky. Toby laughed as the wind ruffled his messy hair. "This is amazing!" he shouted. Shelly glided smoothly, her wing fins catching the breeze. 4

They flew over green hills and sparkling rivers. Toby pointed at clouds shaped like animals, and Shelly told funny stories about each one. "That cloud looks like a grumpy bear," Toby said. Shelly chuckled. "And that one looks like a flying turtle!" They shared a happy laugh. Toby felt brave and free, and his small green backpack bounced gently on his shoulders. 5

At last, they saw the floating island. It hovered above the sea like a big green cloud, with waterfalls spilling off its edges. Vines and flowers covered the rocks, and colorful birds swooped around. Toby's eyes widened. "It's real!" Shelly landed softly on a grassy meadow. "Welcome to the floating island," she said with a warm smile. 6

Toby and Shelly explored the island together. They found a winding path that led to a grove of trees with fruit that glowed like lanterns. Toby picked one and shared it with Shelly. It tasted like honey and sunshine. "This is the best adventure ever!" Toby said. Shelly nodded. "And it's just the beginning." 7

Soon they came to a wide gap between two cliffs. The only way across was a rickety rope bridge, and it swayed in the wind. Toby felt nervous. "What if we fall?" Shelly looked at him kindly. "We can help each other," she said. "I'll glide beside you, and you can hold my vine bracelet for balance." Toby took a deep breath and stepped onto the bridge. 8

With Shelly gliding close by, Toby crossed the bridge one careful step at a time. When he reached the other side, he cheered. "We did it!" Shelly smiled. "You were brave, Toby." They continued along the path until they found a cave filled with sparkling crystals. The light danced on the walls, and Toby felt like he was inside a treasure box. 9

Back outside, they met a family of little birds whose nest had blown away. The birds chirped sadly. Toby had an idea. He used his green backpack to carry twigs and soft moss, and Shelly used her strong shell to push a big branch into place. Together they built a new nest. The birds sang a happy song, and Toby felt warm inside. 10

As the sun began to set, Toby looked at the island and then at Shelly. "I wish I could fly like you," he said softly. Shelly turned her amber eyes to him. "And I wish I could run and climb like you," she replied. "But being different is what makes us special. Your curiosity and kindness are your own kind of magic." Toby smiled, understanding. 11

Just then, the island gave a gentle rumble. A small rock slide blocked the path back to the meadow. Toby felt scared, but Shelly stayed calm. "We can solve this together," she said. Toby used his small hands to move the stones, while Shelly used her shell to push the bigger rocks. Soon the path was clear. "Teamwork!" Toby cheered. 12

They hurried back to Shelly's landing spot as the sky turned pink and orange. Toby climbed onto Shelly's shell, and they took off into the glowing evening sky. Toby watched the floating island shrink below and felt grateful for the adventure. "Thank you, Shelly," he whispered. "For everything." Shelly glided gently through the clouds. 13

They landed softly on the beach near Toby's village. Toby hugged Shelly's neck. "Will I see you again?" he asked. Shelly nodded. "Whenever you need a friend, I'll be here." She gave him a small golden scale from her shell as a keepsake. Toby put it in his pocket and waved as Shelly glided away into the twilight. 14

That night, Toby told his family all about his adventure. He showed them the golden scale and described the floating island. "I learned that being different is special," he said. "And that friends can help each other in wonderful ways." His parents smiled, and Toby fell asleep dreaming of flying turtles and hidden treasures.
