The Boy and the Dream Penguin

The Boy and the Dream Penguin

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Every night, when the moon rises and the stars blink awake, a small boy named Sam climbs into bed in his blue star pajamas and thick red knitted scarf. Sam is gentle and curious, but many things frighten him, and each night he hopes his dream friend will come. In his dreams the snow falls softly like feathers, and out of the white quiet waddles Pip, a funny knee-high penguin with turquoise eyes, a little yellow scarf and a tiny red backpack. Together they slide down smooth hills, make snow angels and catch snowflakes, and Sam begins to feel braver than he does in the daytime.

One night the snow sparkles differently: a tall dream maze of twisty paths and tricky turns rises ahead. Sam hesitates, afraid of getting lost, but Pip reminds him that they can do it together, step by step. Inside the maze the paths curl and loop, and when Sam feels lost and sits down in the snow, Pip offers a gentle lesson about courage: snowflakes do not fall all at once, and courage grows the same way, one small step at a time. Sam stands up, brushes off his pajamas and keeps going until the walls open onto the wide dream snow.

The story is a warm, reassuring tale for young children and for the adults who read to them. It names fear honestly and answers it with companionship, patience and persistence, showing that being brave does not mean never feeling scared. Its simple, rhythmic language and soft snowy imagery make it well suited to bedtime reading and to conversations with children about trying again when something feels too big.

The Boy and the Dream Penguin - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

Every night, when the moon rises and the stars blink awake, a small boy named Sam climbs into bed. He wears blue pajamas with tiny white stars and a thick red knitted scarf. His fluffy slippers wait by the bed. Sam is gentle and curious, but lots of things scare him. He pulls the blanket up to his chin and whispers, "I hope my dream friend comes tonight." 1

In his dream, the snow falls softly, like feathers floating down. The world is white and quiet and safe. Out of the snow waddles a funny little penguin. He is knee-high and round, with a soft blue-black back and a white belly. His turquoise eyes sparkle, and he wears a little yellow scarf and a tiny red backpack. "Hello, Sam!" says Pip. "Ready to play?" 2

Sam laughs and runs into the snow with Pip. They slide down smooth white hills and make snow angels. Pip flips on his round belly and zoom, down he goes! Sam's red scarf flaps in the cold dream wind. "This is the best dream ever," Sam says. Pip winks. "Every night can be like this," he says. "Snow, games, and friends!" 3

Each night, Sam sleeps and meets Pip in the soft white snow. They build snow penguins and have snowball fights. Pip is very funny. He tries to catch snowflakes on his tiny orange beak. Sam's hazel eyes grow wide with joy. His freckles crinkle when he smiles. "You make me brave," Sam tells Pip. Pip grins. "You make yourself brave," he says. 4

One night, the snow sparkles differently. Ahead of them rise tall walls of snow, twisting and turning in every direction. "What is that?" Sam asks. Pip's turquoise eyes shine. "It's a dream maze," he says. "A snowy maze with twisty paths and tricky turns. Want to try?" Sam's small hands tighten on his red scarf. His heart goes thump, thump. 5

Sam takes a step back. "It looks too big," he whispers. "What if we get lost?" The snowy walls seem to stretch up to the sky. Pip waddles close and taps Sam's fluffy slipper with his tiny orange foot. "We can do it together," Pip says. "Step by step. That's all." Sam takes a deep breath. He nods. 6

They step into the maze. The path twists left, then right. Snowy walls rise on both sides. Sam holds Pip's yellow scarf, and they walk close together. "Which way?" Sam asks. Pip points with his beak. "Let's try this turn." They walk, and the path curls like a ribbon. It feels a little scary. But they keep going. 7

The maze is full of tricky turns. One path goes up, then down. Another loops around and brings them back. Sam's round cheeks feel cold. His eyes grow wide. "We've been here before," he says. "I think we're lost." Pip shakes snow off his feathers. "Lost just means we haven't found the way yet," he says. "Let's look again." 8

Sam feels a flutter of fear in his tummy. The snowy walls feel tall and close. He sits down in the soft snow. "I can't do it," he says. Pip sits beside him. "Remember the snowflakes?" Pip asks. "They don't fall all at once. They fall one by one. Courage is like that too. It grows step by step." 9

Sam looks at his dream friend. Pip's turquoise eyes are kind and bright. Sam's red scarf feels warm around his neck. He stands up and brushes snow off his star pajamas. "Okay," he says. "One step at a time." Pip claps his tiny orange feet. "That's the spirit!" Together, they walk on through the twisty white paths. 10

They try a new turn, and the path opens wide. Then another turn, and the walls grow shorter. Sam's heart beats fast, but not from fear now. It beats with hope. "I see something!" he shouts. The snowy walls part, and there, ahead, is the open dream snow. They run out of the maze, laughing and cheering. "We did it!" 11

Pip jumps up and down, his little yellow scarf bouncing. "You did it!" he says. "You kept going, even when you felt scared." Sam hugs his round friend. "I couldn't have done it without you," he says. Pip's beak gives a happy little honk. "Courage grows when you keep going," Pip says. "And you kept going." 12

The dream snow begins to glow with soft morning light. "Time to wake up," Pip says gently. Sam feels a little sad. "Will you come back?" he asks. Pip nods. "Every night," he promises. "Just close your eyes and dream." They wave goodbye, and the snow sparkles like a thousand tiny stars. Sam's heart feels full and warm. 13

Sam wakes up in his bed. Sunlight peeks through the window. His red scarf lies on the chair, and his fluffy slippers wait on the floor. He smiles a big smile. He remembers the twisty maze and Pip's kind words. "Courage grows step by step," he whispers. And he knows it's true. He feels brave and happy. 14

At breakfast, Sam tells his mom, "I dreamed of a penguin who lives inside dreams. We played in the snow and found our way out of a maze!" His hazel eyes sparkle. His freckles dance when he smiles. Mom smiles back. "That sounds like a wonderful dream," she says. "I think it was real," Sam says.
