The Beaver's Floating Castle

The Beaver's Floating Castle

Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

On a bright blue lake surrounded by tall green trees lives Benny, a busy beaver with warm brown fur, a broad flat tail and bright amber eyes full of big ideas. Every morning he swims past the same quiet spot and dreams of building a grand castle right there on the water, with tall towers and a big front gate that everyone will see from far away. Benny is sure he can do it alone, so he stacks sticks and pats mud with all his strength, determined to prove himself the best builder on the lake.

Again and again the tower leans and tumbles into the water with a soft splash. From across the lake, a muskrat named Millie watches the third fall and swims over to offer help. Benny refuses at first, but when his tower wobbles worse than before, he agrees to let her steady the base while he builds. Working side by side, the two animals raise a floating castle that stands tall and strong, and Benny discovers that a big project is easier and more fun with a friend.

The story follows Benny and Millie through an afternoon of patient, cooperative building and an evening celebration lit by fireflies, and it shows how their partnership continues afterward in dens, bridges and other projects for the lake animals. Young readers learn that asking for help does not make you less capable; it makes you a better builder, and that friends with different strengths can accomplish more together than either could alone. The gentle animal characters and simple lakeside setting make it well suited to children beginning to read stories about friendship and teamwork.

The Beaver's Floating Castle - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

On a bright blue lake, surrounded by tall green trees, lived a busy beaver named Benny. Benny had warm brown fur, a broad flat tail, and bright amber eyes that sparkled with big ideas. Every morning, he swam past the same quiet spot and dreamed of something wonderful. 'One day,' he said, 'I will build a grand castle right here on the water.' 1

Benny loved to build. He could stack sticks and pat mud better than any beaver on the lake. His small round ears twitched with excitement as he planned. 'A castle with tall towers and a big front gate,' he told the reeds. 'Everyone will see it from far away.' He grabbed a stick and started to work. 2

Benny chose a spot near the shore where the water was calm. He piled sticks into a wide base and packed mud between them. His short sturdy legs worked fast. 'This will be the strongest castle ever,' he said proudly. But as he stacked higher, the sticks began to shift and sway. 'Hmm,' said Benny, 'maybe I need more mud.' 3

Benny added more mud, but the tower wobbled even more. He tried again and again, but each time the tower leaned and then tumbled down with a soft splash. 'Why won't it stay up?' he sighed. His big white front teeth chewed a stick in frustration. He was determined to do it all by himself. 4

From across the lake, a muskrat named Millie watched Benny's tower fall for the third time. She had soft grey-brown fur, a long thin tail, and kind dark eyes. She swam closer, her nimble paws paddling quietly. 'Hello,' she said. 'That looks like hard work. Would you like some help?' Benny shook his head. 'No, thank you. I can do it alone.' 5

Millie didn't swim away. She floated nearby and watched patiently. Benny tried again, but the tower wobbled worse than before. 'Maybe just one small stick?' Millie suggested gently. Benny sighed. 'Okay,' he said. 'But I'm still the main builder.' Millie smiled and nodded. 'Of course,' she said. 'I'll just steady things while you build.' 6

Millie swam to the other side of the tower and pressed her paws against it. 'Now try adding a stick,' she said. Benny placed a stick carefully. The tower stayed up! 'It's working!' he cheered. Millie held the base steady while Benny packed mud and stacked more sticks. Together, they made the tower taller and stronger than before. 7

They worked all afternoon. Benny stacked sticks and patted mud, while Millie braced each tower so it wouldn't wobble. 'A little more to the left,' she called. Benny moved the stick. 'Perfect!' said Millie. The castle grew taller and wider. Other animals swam by and admired their work. 'What a team!' said a duck. 8

Benny realized that building with Millie was much easier and more fun. 'I'm glad you came over,' he said. 'I thought I had to do everything alone.' Millie smiled. 'Big projects are always easier with a friend,' she said. They added a big front gate and a small window. The floating castle was starting to look grand. 9

As the sun began to set, they finished the last tower. Benny climbed to the top and looked out over the lake. 'We did it!' he shouted. Millie cheered from below. The castle stood tall and strong, with towers that didn't wobble at all. 'It's the best castle on the lake,' said Benny. 'And it's all because of teamwork.' 10

That evening, they celebrated on their new castle. Fireflies twinkled around them like tiny lanterns. Benny brought fresh sticks, and Millie found soft moss to sit on. 'Thank you for helping me,' said Benny. 'You're a great friend.' Millie's whiskers twitched happily. 'Anytime,' she said. 'Building together is the best.' 11

From that day on, Benny and Millie built many things together. They made a cozy den for winter and a small bridge for the turtles. Benny learned that asking for help doesn't make you less of a builder. It makes you a better one. And every time he saw a tall tower, he remembered the day a friend steadied it. 12

The floating castle became a favorite spot for all the lake animals. Ducks rested on its walls, and frogs sang from its towers. Benny and Millie sat on the top and watched the sunset. 'We should build something new tomorrow,' said Benny. Millie nodded. 'As long as we do it together,' she said with a smile. 13

Benny looked at his broad flat tail and then at Millie's long thin one. They were different, but they worked well as a team. 'You know,' he said, 'I used to think I had to be the best builder alone. Now I know that the best builders have good friends.' Millie agreed. 'Teamwork makes everything stronger.' 14

The beaver and the muskrat swam around their castle, proud of what they had made. Benny's amber eyes shone with happiness. 'This is my floating castle,' he said. 'Our floating castle,' corrected Millie with a grin. 'Yes,' said Benny. 'Our castle.' And they both laughed, their voices echoing across the quiet lake. 15

So if you ever visit that lake, look for a grand castle made of sticks and mud. You might see a beaver and a muskrat working side by side. And you'll know that big projects are much easier with teamwork. Benny and Millie will wave to you from the top, happy to share their wonderful floating castle with everyone.
