The Girl and the Snow Leopard - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK
In a cozy mountain village, Mira watched snowflakes dance outside her window. She wore her red pom-pom hat and mustard-yellow jacket. Around her neck hung a tiny silver bell charm that tinkled softly. Her grandmother, Gran, sat by the fire, her purple shawl wrapped tight. 'Tell me the legend of the mountain bell,' Mira begged, her dark brown eyes sparkling. Gran smiled and began. 1
Gran's hazel eyes twinkled behind her wire-rimmed glasses. 'Long ago, a magical snow leopard named Suri wore a special bell on her red cord collar. Its cheerful ring guided lost travelers home through snowstorms. But one winter, the bell vanished, and the mountain grew quiet.' Mira touched her own tiny bell charm. 'Where did it go?' she whispered. 'No one knows,' Gran said. 'Some say only a brave heart can find it.' That night, Mira dreamed. 2
In her dream, Mira stood on a sparkling mountain path. Snowflakes swirled around her, and the air felt crisp and cold. Suddenly, a large snow leopard appeared, her cream-white fur glowing with grey rosettes. Her pale blue eyes were kind, and her long fluffy tail swished gently. Around her neck was a woven red cord collar—with an empty loop where a bell should hang. 'Hello, Mira,' Suri said softly. 'Will you help me find the mountain bell?' 3
Mira's heart thumped. She felt small and scared, but she nodded bravely. 'I will help you,' she said. Suri's faint shimmer glowed brighter. 'A big snowstorm is coming,' Suri warned. 'We must find the bell before it arrives, or everyone will be lost.' Mira looked at her own silver bell charm and thought of Gran. 'Let's hurry!' she said. They set off together, paws and boots crunching on the snow. 4
They climbed higher, past icy rocks and frozen waterfalls. The wind whispered and the snow grew deeper. Mira's blue mittens were wet and cold. 'I'm scared,' she admitted. Suri nuzzled her gently. 'Courage is not about never being scared,' Suri said. 'It is about being scared and still doing what's right.' Mira squared her shoulders. She would protect her village. She would find that bell! 5
They reached a glittering ice cave. Inside, the walls sparkled like a thousand diamonds. 'The bell might be here,' Suri said. But the cave was empty, except for a family of shivering snow rabbits. 'We're lost!' cried a little rabbit. Mira forgot her own fear. 'We'll help you,' she said. She wrapped the smallest rabbit in her scarf. Suri led them all outside to a safe path. 'You were brave,' Suri said. Mira smiled. 6
As they continued, the sky darkened and the wind howled. The snowstorm was coming closer! Mira's red hat was covered in snow. 'We must find the bell soon!' she shouted over the wind. Suri's pale blue eyes scanned the mountainside. 'Look!' she cried. A tiny light twinkled far away on a snowy ledge. They hurried toward it, paws and boots slipping on the icy path. 7
On the ledge, they found an old wooden box half-buried in snow. Mira opened it carefully. Inside, wrapped in a soft cloth, lay a beautiful brass bell. 'The mountain bell!' Suri gasped. Mira picked it up. It was cold and heavy. But just then, the wind grew fierce and the snow swirled thick and fast. 'The storm is here!' Suri said. 'We must ring the bell quickly!' Mira's hands trembled. 8
Mira felt a lump in her throat. What if she couldn't ring it? What if they got lost? But then she thought of Gran and all the villagers. She thought of the little rabbit she had helped. Courage means protecting others, even when you're scared. She took a deep breath and rang the bell with all her might. Its cheerful sound echoed across the mountain, bright and clear. 9
The bell's ring spread through the falling snow. Villagers heard it and followed the sound, their lanterns glowing like fireflies. Mira and Suri guided them down the mountain path, the bell ringing steadily. 'This way!' Mira called. 'Follow the bell!' The snowstorm raged, but the cheerful sound led everyone safely home. Mira's heart swelled with pride. She had done it! 10
As they reached the village, the storm began to fade. Gran stood at her door, her purple shawl wrapped tight, a lantern in her hand. 'You found the bell!' she cried, her hazel eyes shining. Mira hugged her tightly. Suri purred, her shimmer glowing softly. 'You were brave, Mira,' Suri said. 'You protected others, even when you were scared.' Mira beamed. 'I couldn't have done it without you,' she said. 11
Suri gently took the bell and hung it on her red cord collar. The empty loop was filled at last. 'The mountain will always remember your courage,' she said. 'And so will I.' She touched her nose to Mira's cheek. 'It's time for you to wake up now.' Mira felt a warm glow inside. 'Will I see you again?' she asked. 'Whenever you are brave and kind,' Suri promised, 'I will be there.' 12
Mira woke with a start. Sunlight streamed through her window, and the snow had stopped. She touched her silver bell charm and smiled. It had all felt so real! She ran to find Gran. 'I found the bell!' she announced. Gran's eyes widened. 'You did? Tell me everything!' Mira told her about Suri and the cave and the snowstorm.
