The Boy and the Purple Rabbit

🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:52

Max is a curious boy with messy black hair and freckles who loves exploring the meadow behind his house. One sunny morning he hears a giggle behind a bush and discovers a small fluffy rabbit named Joke, whose fur changes colour with his moods and whose favourite thing in the world is telling jokes. As Joke shares one silly joke after another, his fur shifts from purple to blue to green, and Max laughs until his sides ache. The two become fast friends, and Max comes to see the colour changes as a kind of rainbow surprise rather than something odd.

The story turns when a group of other rabbits hops by and calls Joke weird. Joke's ears flatten and his fur fades to grey, but Max stands up for his friend and invites the others to listen. Once they hear Joke's jokes and see the colours flash with joy, the rabbits apologise and join the laughter, and Joke's fur glows a warm purple again. Through this small episode, young readers see how quickly unkind words can dim someone's brightness and how a friend who speaks up can change the mood of a whole group.

The Boy and the Purple Rabbit is a gentle picture-book tale about friendship, self-acceptance and the courage to be different. It suits children in the early primary years, and it works well as a read-aloud story for parents, teachers and carers who want to talk about kindness, inclusion and standing up for others, with plenty of jokes to share along the way.

The Boy and the Purple Rabbit - Author : Ebru Mina TOMURCUK

In a cozy little town with winding streets and tall green trees, there lived a boy named Max. Max had warm light-brown skin, messy black hair, and freckles across both cheeks. He loved to explore and find new things. Every day after school, he put on his bright red t-shirt, blue overalls, and white sneakers with red stripes, and went on adventures. His yellow backpack was always ready for surprises. 1

One sunny morning, Max skipped into the meadow behind his house. The grass was soft, and flowers nodded in the breeze. He heard a tiny giggle from behind a bush. Max peeked around and gasped. There sat a small, fluffy rabbit with long ears, a blue ribbon tied around one ear, and big shiny amber eyes. But this rabbit was not just any color—its fur was bright purple! 2

Max blinked and rubbed his eyes. The rabbit's fur shimmered and turned blue! Then green! The rabbit looked at Max and said, "Why did the carrot go to the doctor? Because it wasn't feeling well!" Max burst out laughing. The rabbit's fur turned purple again. "Wow!" said Max. "Your fur changes color when you tell jokes!" The rabbit nodded shyly. "I'm Joke," he said. "And I love making friends laugh." 3

Max sat down in the grass, and Joke hopped onto a flat rock. "Tell me another joke!" Max said. Joke's ears wiggled. "What do you call a rabbit with fleas? Bugs Bunny!" His fur turned bright green. Max giggled so hard his belly hurt. "That's so funny!" he shouted. Joke's fur turned blue. "I'm glad you think so," Joke said. "My colors change when I feel happy inside." 4

Max and Joke spent the whole morning telling jokes. Joke told a joke about a banana, and his fur turned yellow for a second. Max laughed. Then Joke told a joke about a snowman, and his fur turned white. Max clapped. "You're amazing!" he said. Joke blushed, and his fur turned pink. "I can't help it," Joke said. "Jokes make me happy, and happy makes me change color." Max thought that was the best thing ever. 5

As they sat together, Max asked, "Do you ever wish you were one color like other rabbits?" Joke's ears drooped a little. "Sometimes," he said. "Other rabbits think I'm strange. They don't want to play with me because I'm different." Max felt a tug at his heart. "I think you're wonderful," he said. "Your colors are like a rainbow surprise!" Joke's fur turned a soft purple. "You really think so?" he whispered. 6

Max nodded. "Of course! Being different is what makes you special." Joke smiled. "Then I'll tell you more jokes!" He took a deep breath. "Why did the cookie go to the doctor? Because it felt crummy!" His fur turned bright green. Max rolled on the grass laughing. "That's the best one yet!" he shouted. Joke's fur turned blue with happiness. They laughed until their sides ached. 7

Just then, a group of rabbits hopped by. They stared at Joke and whispered. "Look at that weird rabbit!" one said. "He's all purple and blue!" Joke's ears flattened, and his fur turned a dull gray. Max stood up. "Don't be mean," he said. "Joke is my friend. His colors are amazing!" The rabbits looked surprised. One of them stepped forward. "Really? Can you show us?" 8

Joke looked at Max, who nodded encouragingly. Joke told a joke: "What do you call a rabbit who tells jokes? A funny bunny!" His fur turned bright purple. The rabbits giggled. Then Joke told another: "Why did the rabbit cross the road? To get to the other side!" His fur turned green. The rabbits laughed out loud. Soon they were all laughing and asking for more jokes. Joke's fur flashed purple, blue, and green with joy. 9

Max smiled as he watched his new friend surrounded by laughing rabbits. He realized that Joke's color changes were not strange at all—they were like a special gift. "You see?" Max said to the other rabbits. "Joke's colors show how happy he is. And he makes us happy too!" The rabbits nodded. "We're sorry we said you were weird," one said. "You're actually really cool!" Joke's fur turned a warm, glowing purple. 10

From that day on, Max and Joke were best friends. They met in the meadow every afternoon. Joke told jokes, and Max laughed. Sometimes Joke's fur turned purple, sometimes blue, sometimes green—and sometimes all three at once! Max loved every color. He learned that friendship is not about being the same. It's about enjoying each other's differences and sharing lots of laughter. 11

One day, Joke asked, "Max, why do you like me even though I'm different?" Max thought for a moment. "Because your differences make you fun," he said. "I never know what color you'll be next! And your jokes make me happy." Joke's eyes sparkled. "You make me happy too," he said. "When I'm with you, I feel like I can be myself." His fur turned a deep, happy purple. "And that's the best feeling in the world." 12

Max and Joke decided to share their friendship with everyone. They invited the other rabbits to join them. They told jokes and laughed together. Joke's fur changed color so many times that the meadow looked like a rainbow. The other rabbits tried to tell jokes too, and even though their fur didn't change, they felt happy inside. Max realized that everyone has something special—you just have to look for it.
